  • Series 7 Episode 1. Aired 4th April 2013 on BBC Radio 4.
Writer and documentary maker Jon Ronson returns for another five-part series of fascinating stories shedding light on the human condition.
In the first programme, he investigates confirmation bias - or why so many people look for evidence that confirms their pre-existing beliefs.
Jon believes he may be susceptible to confirmation bias himself. Over the last two years he has kept noticing that the time on his phone is 11.11. After looking on the internet, he found out there are many other people also doing this, including Uri Geller who first started noticing the number 11 over twenty years ago. Jon has also discovered that a particular community of people believe 11.11 is a sign for a new spirit guide who will come to earth, coincidentally known as Monjoronson. He speaks to the owner of the Monjoronson web domain, Ron Besser, and asks if it is possible that Jon himself is the spirit guide they're looking for.
Jon talks to other people who have been affected by confirmation bias, including an Oxford academic who believes her fate can be determined by looking at two lip balm pots.
The journalist David Aaronovitch says he believed the delusions he had while suffering intensive care psychosis after a routine operation were real.
Lotfi Raissi, the first person to be charged in connection with the September 11th attacks, tells Jon he believes his arrest was down to confirmation bias because he fitted a certain profile. A judge found there was no evidence to link Raissi to any form of terrorism.
Finally Jon speaks to the lawyer Clive Stafford Smith, who believes people who are prone to confirmation bias are more likely to be recruited to police forces.
    Producer: Lucy Greenwell
A Unique production for BBC Radio 4.

Uri Gellar, "These skeptics will find a way to debunk things, I ignore that."
'Cause fuck evidence messing with my narrative.
    Dictionary definition of _conformation_ _bias._
Uri Gellar, "I don't wanna hear explanations."

I always see the 11 11. And was told years ago that when a conversation has a lull in it, the time is always twenty past or twenty to the hour. It seems to work fairly often!

I knew a kid in high school in the early 90s who believed this! Back before we carried phones everywhere (before cell phones existed). We chalked it up to him being a pothead. He was really freaked out about it.

In the 90's when I was at Oxford there was this girl who was clearly into me, she smiled & fluttered her eyelashes. I was into her to but too shy to ask her out on a date. I was trying to pluck up the courage & ask her out but before I had the chance her cherry flavoured lip balm said "Noooo!" and that put an end to what could have been a long & wonderful courtship 😁😅🙈

Is it true confirmation bias when you do actually look at the clock a lot and it happens to be 1111 when you decide to look without trying or intent. It happens frequently to me

    00:14 here!
Perhaps now people can see a window into the sort of blinkered defiance that leads Uri Gellar to be so convinced in all his other tripe, when he thinks this 11:11 thing is mystical.
Most people can understand that looking as a clock and seeing 4 numbers the same is going to make pattern finding anmials like humans place some significance on it and make a note of it, it also happens twice per day, whereas the only other ones 00:00 and 22:22 happen once per day.
If Uri can't see that one then he doesn't have a basic grasp, so why is he someone to ask about deep psychological phenomenon? he isn't

It happens to me all the time. 11:11. But it’s not rocket science. There’s little reason to take note of all the times I look and it’s not 11:11. And Anthony Blair is 11letters is it? Tiresome man is Uri

Uri Geller, what a joke. He says he's rational and then continues to Carl Jung in the next sentence. And then says that he want's to believe, no matter if it's true or not, and then try to make "confirmation bias" to be something skeptics have come up with, rather than the product of actual research.
