    Both my Polish grandmother and German grandfather were from Gdansk, Danzig then, emigrated to America, and met in Detroit, Michigan, USA, and were married there and had their family. I think they came to America before The First World War. Do you have anything about Gdansk from that time?

      Not sure if there are video documents like this one but books in Polish or English for sure. Many documents, at that time were moved to US and now they are in libraries across the States. France (Turks too) was taking care of Polish territory when it wasn't on the map because of closest neighbors and French was diplomacy language in Europe at that time.

    I am sick og listening to all this shitty history. The truth is that:
    Until 1945 Danzig/Gdansk was a city with a large German majority that was wrongfully expelled, you cannot justify that with history - as well as Gdansk is a polish City today with a big polish majority that was born and raised in the city and have the right to belong to whatever country they like.
    AND it does not give any since to argue wether Gdansk was "originally" German or Polish many centuries back. It was none and both. At the time the city was founded, europe was very densely populated - especially in those eastern parts and areas very small by today standards could be populated with different tribes/groups that had VERY complicated ethnic composition - The categorisation of "slavic" and "Germanic" tribes was something the romans invented about some distent groups outside the roman empire. Much of the Gdansk we see today traces back to the citys history as an important harbour on a chain of citys that trade with one another - And these merchant mostly spoke German! Note that germany didn't really exist until 1871, so it wasn't a part of Germany for that reason.
    AND just because a city first belonged to a state where the term "Polish" is, doesn't mean that the inhabitants were poles just as it dosn't mean they where Lithuanians because of the "polish-lithauranian commenwealth" or "kingdom of Poland"
    And it wasn't German because of it belonging to Germany after 1871. It was a German/polish/kashubian/Yiddish/Hebrew populated city that until 1945 mostly had a German majority, but belonged to many different states thought history. All this abuse of history to justify modern politics is out of place!!!
    Gdansk today is a Polish city, but with a very interesting multiethnic history, where German speaking people has a huge place! - Where is that a problem? It should make stronger bonds between Poland and Germany that the countrys has so much good culture and history in common!! Of cause one should not forget ww2, but remembering it by being hostile to one another can't be the right lesson to learn, right?

    • @henningbartels6245
      @henningbartels6245 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kristopher, very well written!
      I'm tired of reading the same phrases over and over again ...that something has always been Polish ... combined with mentioning of some ancient Slavic dude (for whom centuries later it was decided he can't be anything but a Pole) and at his time cities didn't really exist, rather some fort or a fishermen village.
      If everything was always so clearly Polish and all the people were just Germanized Poles, why did they all had to leave the area after end of the war and were not allowed to stay?
      Why not sharing history and traditions? Why not accept gray as well and not just black and white? Why not using that what connects to build new bridges?
      And even the people who live there today have a need to identify with their city. Places of identification are often the oldest parts of the city. In order to identify you need to know the history of these places and not some made-up story.

      To, że Niemcy osiedlali się w tych miastach nie oznaczało, że to są miasta niemieckie. Bo te miasta w większości leżały na ziemiach polskich . Gdańsk do czasu zbrodniczych rozbiorów należał do Polski. Błędem ogromnym było uczynienie Gdańska Wolnym Miastem .Wtedy Niemcy zaczęli do Gdańska sprowadzać ludność niemiecką i szykanować ludność polską .W wolnym mieście Gdańsk zaczęły działać faszystowska partia NSDAP i hitlerjugend. Zaraz po wybuchu wojny w miejscowości Stuthoh Niemcy urządzili obóz, w którym straciło życie wielu Polaków zamieszkujących w Gdańsku i okolicach.
