This is just fabulous. So many great footage of such a secretive bird. Including some vocalizations I have never hear before. Great job!

So blessed to have a returning migrant to our Johannesburg city garden. My husband planted the trees and shrubs affording the camouflage habitat.

Just saw a nightjar for the first time in my back garden in a urban area UK west midlands resting and sleeping on my small grey wall ledge, so well camouflaged! omg what a stunning weird bird. Beautiful wing span with white feathers when it flew off .

Thanks for sharing! Nightjars are so fascinating, and their chicks are so cute! 🥰 They’re like the terrestrial versions of owls. 🦉I hope to see one in real life.

A chick born, grown up to be a nocturnal, somewhat swift-like, partly terrestrial bird, fastly moving its beak jaws as it emits a long trill, heard with some emphasizing undertones of glamour. It often goes out on the trees, perhaps scanning its surroundings. As it flies, it flaps with rough, sharp claps as it call out. Nesting among the ground, the dirt partly scattered with grass make for it, no need for nest arrangement, and the chicks tinily trill for food. Elusive and cautious about the surroundings, the nightjar will often have to care for the chicks in the breeding times and will often grunt in assistance of their chicks. Not always easy to watch and search out for them, they sometimes have to wander around the forest and always rest for the day. Chicks sometimes wander around not far from the nest to call their parents. Owls and other nightjars call out while the aware parents take care for the chicks. How long has this dedication come for one person to observe the behavior for hours and hours, amazing how patient he is. The light trills come out of the parent bird, often responsible for the safety of the chicks. Beaks look small but are significantly wide. Chicks growing, starting to make trilling sounds not pronounced much, and they feel calm together, somewhat. Chicks yawn and trill wondering about their parents have gone, are they gonna see them? Well, they will have to do something by themselves instead. Chicks grow up much, seeing how far they have lived now to the near mature stage. All the best goes for the parents for their chicks, and the chicks survived! At some point, the chicks have to use a threaten technique and defend themselves, and so, what are they seeing? Oh well, chick says go away. The chicks feel more excited than ever, yet they still think, how long will I survive, as whether I may not be eaten by a predator? Everything hopefully goes well for them, with the sight of a nightjar perched on a thick branch, often calm regardless of what's happening, but still aware that is, a songbird near it doesn't annoy much. All it is, to the calmness and the stillness of the nightjar, at the end!

I have never seen one (except perhaps a black siluette flying by), but now I know for sure I have heard it many years in a row at night behind our old summer cottage. It worries me to learn that they are ground nesting though, there are a lot of huge domestic neighbour cats prowling around at night.
