Thai Breakfast Rice Soup Recipe "Kao Tom" | Thai Recipes ข้าวต้มกุ้ง

  • Another Thai breakfast video! You can think of this as the Thai sister of congee which is of Chinese origin. Instead of being porridge-like, it's more of a soup. Jasmine rice is added to flavourful broth, and it's one of the most comforting dishes. It's a great breakfast in the winter too!
To put this together quickly in the morning: Make the broth and whatever protein you like in advanced and keep them in the fridge. Have some cooked jasmine rice in the fridge, too. Comes time to eat, bring the broth to a boil, add the rice and protein and let it heat up thoroughly. Et voila!

Thank you Paillin, I'm a Thai guy and never cooked before. My dad got food poisoning from yesterday, so I made a rice soup for him. He likes it very much, and I am just happy to see him feel better. Excellence recipe!!! Thank you!!!

I spent a month in Thailand, went everywhere from the far North to the far South, and I have to say from all the amazing things I tried, this was my favorite breakfast! Amazing! Thank you so much for the recipe, now I can eat it for breakfast in my home too!

Sold! This is the kind of simple but genuine personal recommendation I respond to. The power has reached my kitchen here in England and I'll cook it next week. I have Rendang in the fridge that needs to be eaten over the weekend first. :D

I just made this for dinner and IT WAS AMAZING! I'm nursing a cold and this made me feel so much better. Deveined Argentinian shrimp was on sale at the market for $9.99/lb, so it was great timing. So very happy with this meal -- thanks, Pai!

Thanks for posting this. I can't wait to try it. I've tried to get my family to break out of the notion of only having traditional "western" breakfast menus, with little success. But I think I could sell them on this. When I lived in Thailand I got hooked on cup jok and loved it, but this looks like it will be 1000% better since, it's not instant, and I can control how thick or soupy I want it by the amount of rice I add. I also never thought of making everything ahead of time and just combining it in the morning. Thanks again.

Pai reminds me a one of the first televised chefs, Graham Kerr. He was famous for his facial expressions when he tasted his dishes, Pai does the same thing. It just makes you want to immediately cook-up and taste her dishes. Her recipes are the bomb!

I had Kao Tom in Bangkok in of the breakfast buffets. Really loved it, I also used some kind of spicy pickle, dried shrimp
and fresh chili slices as toppings. Unfortunate that none of the Thai restaurants I have come across in the US has this in their menu.

Pai, have you ever had the Filipino version of something similar called Arroz Caldo? I think you would definitely like it! It's got a prominent garlic and ginger flavor! So tasty and very comforting! My favorite thing about it is the toppings like green onions, soft boiled egg, fried garlic chips or even chicken Chicharrón to make it even more decadent! And of course calamansi or lemon to help cut through the richness! If you haven't ever tried, I hope you do!
