    I think what makes something like the SnS novel is that it 1) incorporates a water trough and 2) only allows air in from the bottom, which probably helps with it's efficiency/slowing down the burn rate of the charcoal. A charcoal basket isnt otherwise needed, maybe just convenient for keeping charcoal neat for lighting, i'd think.

    Have you thought of adding mesh wire under basket to help retain the coals longer? Good vid.

    It's a great idea, I built one myself.
    I find that self tapping screws was a lot easier and faster. Screw from the outside in then grind off the excess.

    Nice Video Demo.
    I use firebrick method and put Alu foil on the opposite side charcoal grate, throw a water/drip pan under where the food is. I have smoked many a Thanksgiving turkey & more recently a full brisket this way.
    I may try the Weber charcoal basket hack to contain my banked coals better in combination with the firebricks. I like the basket method to prevent the loss to radiant heat through kettle wall.
    The Weber Charcoal baskets are made in the USA, The SNS is made in China. This alone is a good reason for me to not buy the SNS

    Way to go Paul. I don't have a Summit or a kettle, (just propane bbq and Traeger smoker), but I appreciate that you took the time to show this idea to those who do.
    You just disappointed me in one area. I think that you missed out on making a bunch of these and selling them from your basement for $99.00.
    You could have been a millionaire.
    Keep the videos coming.

      You don't necessarily need a grill to make BBQ but you bought one anyways. The slow and sear will work and serve it's purpose and do it well. I don't know why people want to minimize the slow and sear insert.

    Thx for this great video! I just build mine because I’m always struggling with the charcoal while using my rotisserie on the Summit. I’ll test it this evening with a spit roast.

    I have these trays or whatever you call them and I use them on my Weber Kettle that I turned into a smoker, but I don't use it anymore so much now that I have the Pit Boss but those trays BBQ briquette holders I stopped using them anyways because get enough in there to go with it so I just put the briquettes in and let her go

    Well i saw a review where someone did a comparison for ther SnS and this device and guess what the Weber charcoal basket and the SnS were tied so for my money its 25 dollars for the charcoal baskets and a aluminum pan for water is for me!!!!

    Well done video. But a bunch a people figured out how to do this years ago. I have a couple in my Ranch. Funny thing is, nobody did it before the Slow and Sear came out. In fact, an early post that I saw called it a "Bro and Sear". I just checked, the base model is $70. This is a cheap shot at a good company that I like. You made a good video, leave out the cheap shots at good companies.

    • @paulsq_
      @paulsq_  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment Jon. I wasn’t taking a cheap shot at any said company I’m just showing others who might not know how they can make there charcoal baskets to be more useful to them for a cheaper option. If it’s a company you happen to like how come you made your own vs buying a couple from them?

    • @MrPatrol456

      This mod won't block heat or air moving through to the indirect side, so while it banks the charcoal, it won't provide as much temperature differential between direct and indirect side as the aforementioned "gimick". Now, firebrick on the otherhand.......🤔

  • @vanhelmen3168
    @vanhelmen3168 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    That doesn't make sense to me! That is a workaround setup for inderect heat like you would do it with an ordinary kettle. Why would I wanna do that in a summit kamado which gives me a third level dedicated for indirect long jobs. And if -for whatever reason- I really want indirect heat on the upper level like this, I can put one basket to a side and one to the front or back. No need to waste the versatility of the two sepeate baskets which is just superb for direct grilling and even also for indirect on the lower level for shorter jobs, when you want to keep the briquettes together and elevated.
