Exactly right. His emphatic "one-nil" followed by a pause, as you say to be able to hear the roars of the crowd, and only then his follow-up comment. So simple, yet so dramatic. No other commentator does it better,

" McCalliog to Stokes he`s onside 1 - 0 " As a boy the FA cup final was like Christmas day. All day build up when very little live football was on the tv. And that commentary from David Coleman will always stay with me. Not a Saints fan but that game was one of my favorites of all time. Alongside that Sunderland v. Leeds epic. I dont know for sure but was that the first time the Admiral kit was first seen. Always loved those little logo`s running down the Southampton kits sleeve and shorts. I know Norwich City had the same design the following season. Happy days. Yes i am sad. 😂

As a young lad I used to hang about outside Ninian Park to get opposition players autographs after matches. 99% of players just did a quick squiggle. The best proper autographi I got was when Saints came to town. Bobby Stokes gave a proper signature, and had a chat with all the young fans before getting on the team bus. He was an example to all pro footballers. Was taken far too early.

As an 11 year old, I was very aggrieved by Southampton winning against the run of play, and became a firm Manchester United fan for the next 20 years. Looking back, Southampton probably deserved the win. These highlights seem to suggest Southampton had more chances than I remember! For the goal, Buchan (number 6) would have been playing Stokes onside (see 3:20 and more so the replay at 3:43).

I have never understood why in 1-on-1 situations with the goalkeeper more players do not just chip/dink/lob the ball over the keeper. There is a Mick Channon chance where all he had to do was lift the ball over the keeper and it would have just rolled into the net. He just blasted it.
In the modern era I have seem Raheem Stirling do the same thing so many times; just blast it straight at the keeper. Perhaps, in the heat of the moment it is much more difficult than it looks. You need to have situational awareness in fractions of a second.
Perhaps that is what separates the great players from just the good players. I just read a newspaper article about Bobby Stokes. Very sad. Still nobody can ever take away the feeling he had of scoring the winning goal in a Cup Final.
