  • This is an update to my last review of the Fiat 500e 2017. Now that I have had the car for about a month, wanted to share my thoughts about it and take is on a road trip up some hills and see how it does. Thanks for watching, and feel free to ask questions in the comments below.

    Just got a used (off lease ) 2014 1 month ago. It is fantastic. I commute 50 miles round trip, using just over half of the stored energy. Plug in at night. It is the fastest car I have owned, (except for a 1952 Jaguar Mk 1 sedan) . Accelerates and handles like a sports car. Love it. The generic 240 volt charger I installed in my garage charges it in 4 hours from empty, but tops it off after getting back from work in about 1 and a half hours. Also have grid tie solar, the car uses about 1/3 of my daily output to charge from empty, but averages only 13 % with my typical use. I sometimes plug in at work if I am close to an outlet and it is fully charged when I leave for home. Then it only takes about 40 min to recharge at home. -----Go electric and go solar. Fantastic car!

      This is a car I initially dismissed as a toy. My work commute is 48 miles round trip, I have free L2 charging at work, and free L2 charging within walking distance of my apartment. My plan was to get an electric scooter and ride it home and back. Really stoked about the active battery charging. I'm figuring that if I need to go out of town I plan to also own a Civic GX (CNG), I see them selling pretty cheap. I live in SoCal they have them for $8000 and under all day.

    Good video. I have a 2015 500e I bought a year ago. It only had 3000 miles on it. Paid just over 10k for it, tax and license included. I love this car. I bought a level II charger and it makes the car even more practical.

    Thanks for the great review. I purchased and imported an off lease Fiat 500e to Georgia back on the 4th of January. I live in the smallest city & county in the state of Georgia. Home of the University of Georgia @ Athens. Our nearest FIAT dealer is in Atlanta, a little over a half a charge away, and I'm sure that the dealer there would be clueless if I had to take this totally electric FIAT in for service! It was a leap of faith to purchase this FIAT but due to it having the BOSCH drivetrain and an amazing battery cooling system, I felt confident that this was a risk worth taking. After living with this amazing FIAT 500e for three months, (I did install a JuiceBox Pro Level 2 Charger at the house), I am sold on the total electric vehicle. I love my 500e!

      +HEAD4UGA I have been debating on installing the level 2 charger. There has only been one day that it didn't charge all the way up over night because it didn't have enough time. But, it would be nice to not even have to worry about it anymore.

      Hi Greg. I charge up with the JuiceBox Pro from a 19% battery in under 3 hours. I did spend $600 on the JBP (it also has a great app that keeps track of your kwh) and another $400 to install the correct plug for the unit. The peace of mind knowing that I can come home and plug up my FIAT to a full charge by the AM and drive it up to 80 miles plus the next day, has made me a believer in the electric car!

      +gasdorfic muncher when I first bought the car I drove it from the deal which was 70 miles from my house. 95% of that was highway. I had like 8% left in my car so I was cutting it closes lol. I also had it on cruse control most of the time and did not run the AC as that take your mileage down about another 10 miles or so. Hope that helps

    I recently bought one the same years and the same color, except mine has a sunroof. I wanted an inexpensive EV for around town here in Phoenix. I love this little Fiat 500e. It is a great little car for doing all my daily things, and it cost almost nothing to run. 5 year registration here in Arizona was $86 dollars, and I can drive in the carpool lane anytime I want because it's an EV. It only has about a 95 miles range, but it's plenty good for 90% of what most people people drive in a city. I see all the these people buying giant gas guzzling pickup trucks that get 15mpg, because they have to have an ego booster. I grew up having small cars, and I'm 6'5". I will never go back to owning a gas powered car again. Electric Cars forever!

    Is the 2017 Fiat 500e and the 2018 Fiat 500e the EXACT same car?? I am asking because I need a replacement for the front spoiler (the plastic piece under the grill...) but it seems like I can't find that part for the 2017 Fiat 500e anywhere... I found that part for the 2018 Fiat 500e model but I'm afraid it won't fit...

    Have you experimented using more air pressure in the tires. I get about 30% better mileage when I double the air pressure. I drive a 2000 Honda insight. I only do this on brand new tires and when they're four years old I start letting the pressure go back closer to normal but never normal.

      Radnally tires are one of strange things - they are all same size, but wheels itself are different for front and back. So rotation is only possible side to side. Also, as it is FWD and lots of torque, front tires are wearing off much faster and inability to rotate to back, you end up replacing front tires separately

    Nice video -and when I heard You mention Kaweah Lake, I had to smile as it was was of my favorite places when I was going to COS. Incidentally, I have the Mercedes B class electric and, aside from limited range, love it. We're in line for the Tesla 3, but may need to get something else before my lease is up in nine months.

      +Mark Masi lol yeah Kaweah is so closed that I take it for granted. How long ago where you at COS? I went there 2011-2013. Also,Tesla man that is awesome! I love how innovative they are with their cars.

      Greg, as I started watching this video, I’m thinking, why is this guy familiar to me? Then, when you mentioned Kaweah, I realized that I commented on your first video a year ago! Then saw that you’d responded to me way back then! Anyway, apologies for this VERY late response to your response. I went to COS way back in 75-76 (I’m old). Some of the best times of my life. Miss that version of the valley more then I can express.
      Now, cars: had the B class electric for 3 years, but, as I live in Malibu, we’d use up a big bite of its range just getting into LA proper or the San Fernando Valley. So, leasing a Bolt now and am so impressed. Not the quality feel of a Benz, but the range is amazing. Bailed on the Tesla as I’d still be waiting, and really like the practicality of a hatchback.
      Again, sorry for the delayed response, but happy to see you’re still out there making smart videos.
      Mark

    • @viviennelam8628

      Got the answer from my sales guy: it is a trunk release just in case a child get stuck in the car. It is for an emergency.

    • @EleTruk
      @EleTruk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, that is incorrect, it is the release for the gas filler door. Normally the filler door locks when the car is locked, but I guess they have had issues in the past (with the gas cars).The 500 models do not have an internal trunk/hatch release, it's electrical, and won't open with a dead battery.

      500e is a tough option if you don't have the ability to charge at home. No level 3 fast charging, so level 2 (~4hrs to full) is your fastest option, meaning charging up at a public charger is a chore. There are a couple other similar EVs available at similar pricing with fast charging, I believe the spark EV is a good option. Also, in this class of electric car DEFINITELY consider financing a 3-year old model instead of leasing new. I just bought a '17 500e with under 30k miles for just over $7k, compared to $34k new. Even with the higher interest rates for a used car, payments come out a lot cheaper than a lease (plus the downpayment is actually lower than a new lease). Depreciation is huge on the cheap EV class because people are wary due to the battery issues the first gen leaf had, even though they all (including the modern leaf) have proper thermally managed batteries so it's a non-issue.

    Hi Greg, thanks for your informative videos. I am seriously considering getting a 500e and I need your advice. Should I just buy a used one? lease? I cannot afford to buy one brand new even with the CA and U.S. credits. My anxiety about buying a used one is how much battery life there is left in it. The used ones on the market right now have about 10,000-25,000 miles on it (2013-2015). And that's another thing...the prices here in CA are so low ($6500-$10000) that something in me tells me it's too good to be true. So, your thoughts?

    • @thatgregsvlog449
      @thatgregsvlog449  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jose ledesma I am normally not the type of person who leases a car or thinks that is a good investment, but with all the perks that CA gives you towards the car I would highly recommend leasing the car over buying them. I have heard that their batteries last 8-10 years and that replacing there batteries cost similar to replacing an engine. So I would keep that in mind if you buy. Might be the reason for the low cost is that your going to pay a good amount to replace the batteries. Thanks for watching.

    I don't know if you still own the vehicle but what I've read about and watched on TH-cam videos is that it's no longer being used by Fiat I guess it was discontinued a while back which probably by now you know anyways just want to let you know I know they sell a device that now you can use the app again that your going to have to look up on TH-cam! It's a device that you buy and hook up to your car which hooks to you the app to do the things that it was doing before it was discontinued! Which is good because I know you can schedule it to do it's charging through a 7-Day week and you can also do the heating and cooling in the car without being in it which sounds pretty nice! If you're not aware of it you should look into it hope your car still running good! That's if you still have it!

      Really, it depends on the temperature differential. The range indicator automatically knocks of 10% as soon as you turn it on, but how it actually affects range depends on how much you blast the A/C. The range indicator is an estimate, not an absolute number.

    So how many miles did you drive in total and what was your speed on the road. I have a 50 mile round trip commute during the week and 80 mile round trip commute during the weekend, I can chart at my destination. I looking to get a used one, but i'm a bit hesitant with range anxiety and all. Thanks for your earlier reply. Hope you add another review in a couple months.
    Gil

    • @thatgregsvlog449
      @thatgregsvlog449  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +gildardo I drove 39 miles when I turned around. So 78 in total. I drove 55 mph up to it on the back roads and going back I drove 65 mph on the freeway both times where on cruise control so I was getting the best mileage I could. Also I didn't run the AC. The biggest thing is the type of charger that you uses. The car comes with a charger that works off a normal 120 volt plug, but it takes around 22 hour to charge from under 10% of battery. The faster charger that run off 220 volt take, I think, 3-4 hours. So if you have that you are good and if your destination has that kind of charge then I think you would be good. But yeah the distance this thing can drive is the biggest down fall and second is the time it take to charge. If you can make those things work it is an awesome car.

    • @gildardo
      @gildardo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's the kind of test that I was looking for. That's a really good result for the type of driving that you did. I'll keep an eye on used car prices and hope to get a cheap one. Thanks for your detail response.

    • @onegreenev
      @onegreenev 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I drive 45 miles round trip daily to work. I drive pretty much at 58mph there and back on cruise control. All flat ground. If you do an 80 mile round trip you will want to be able to charge at work before leaving so that means two full charges per day. One issue is detours encountered because of accidents on the roads you always drive. If you do not plan for that you can get stuck waiting until the road opens back up because you may not have enough juice to get home. Happened to me once. It sucked. The 80mile round trip is running on the edge and after a few years you might be having range issues in the extreme cold that may prevent you from your destination just one way. I consider my commute a bit of an edgy one because of the round trip without charging up at work. In the cold it gets worse as does the super hot summers. Takes range from your battery. Don't think you will be actually doing 90 miles per charge and it also depends upon your driving habits. I drive aggressively because I like the fun factor.

    Three months into my three-year lease...I LOVE my Fiat 500e...the rebates here in California are a no brainer...it's like being paid thousands to drive the car. Only a couple of downfalls...I live in the mountains...the dealer is a full charge away...so more miles on a charge would be my request...and more charging stations available in my neck of the woods. Would I lease an electric Fiat again? Absolutely! It's fun to drive...puts a smile on my face driving past a gas station...PG&E, our electric company, offers reduced rates for off-peak times of electric usage...fun to try something new and different and be ahead of what others haven't discovered yet.

      Not really? There is not only official support. There's unofficial support. There is an app that lets you see official chargers and unofficial chargers. Unofficial chargers are charger supplied by the community the public. So yes you might park in someone's driveway but if they're offering free level 3 charging then I'll do it

    Picked up a couple weeks ago a 2014 Fiat 500e. The Orange and White one. Mine has what looks like Leather Seats and Sunroof. Handles like my old 62 Mini Cooper. And its electric. I drove a Nissan Leaf for 6 years so I know electric cars. I converted two. Mine has 35,800 miles and when fully charged still shows 85 miles even when cold out. Im not actually getting that but its a good start and better than the Leaf. I like the roominess in the front and will never put anyone in the rear seats. Not quite as refined as the Leaf or Tesla but I can't actually afford the Tesla or I would have picked one up. I paid cash for my 500e so no more car payments. Yeah! Nothing better than fully paid electric vehicle and a roof full of solar panels to fuel my little beastie. Power of the Sun. I hate gasoline cars. Not that I hate gasoline that much but sorta do I just can't see ever going back to gasoline. Electric is a so much better driving experience than gasoline power cars. Never drove a Tesla but got a ride in one. Drove many DIY electric car conversions. Even those are better than gasoline vehicles. If I do drive other than electric I drive turbo diesels. Overall Im pleased. Plenty of leg and head room for my 6'2" size. Time to modify a little and drop it into the weeds.

    • @onegreenev
      @onegreenev ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jerry Sullivan I still have my little Orange Skittle. I have not dropped it in the weeds yet but I do drive it daily. My commute is 45miles round trip and currently with the heat we are having the little beastie gets a solid 75 miles with the air on at least one direction from work and driving from 55 to 60 mph. The guess o meter says right now a good 85 miles but reality says more like 75. I have had one issue since I have owned the beastie. I had to replace my charge socket and I spliced in a custom aluminum socket to the original cable. That took a bit of work but it has been working flawless since I replaced that and I had to replace the plug from the charger because they got burned from the socket pins being loose. The stock plastic socket is cheap and can be an issue. If it was an issue for me Im quite sure it will be an issue for others at some point. I love the little beastie and looking at buying another used one. I wish the Nissan Leaf battery pack was as durable as this little one. Since I have not heard any different I'll stick with the Fiat 500e.

    I live in Houston Texas. There is simply no way you can run your car without AC. However, I would be using the car exclusively in the city, and spending a great deal of time in the traffic jams. Which I hear is good for autonomy. I heard that in slow moving traffic the 500e autonomy goes way beyond 100 miles. Is this your experience?

    • @melinavela9
      @melinavela9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pisk Six I live in Houston Texas and I drive around 50 miles round trip with my 2015 Fiat 500e. I do have a heavy foot when I drive. When I turn on the a/c it takes away an automatic 10 miles off. Giving me around 80 miles to use. I do take the highway to work and I get there with 46 miles left on it. Then when I leave I am in MAJOR MAJOR traffic, stopping and going and it does good in the traffic because it regenerates power when I use the brakes or let go of the “gas”. I usually have about 29 - 25 miles left in it when I get home. I have a 240v charger at home so it charges fast. When I use the heater that takes away sooooo much more power out of the car. So I just use the seat warmers to keep warm while I get to work and driving home. That works for me. In Houston we don’t get cold weather that much. Otherwise I LOVE MY CAR!!!! But I am willing to sell it if anyone is interested in buying it. Respond to this post and send me a message or your email if someone may be interested.

    • @thatgregsvlog449
      @thatgregsvlog449  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +John Teng hey John. Thanks for checking out my video. I would think that it could make that drive. When I drive with my AC on it drops it's distance down 8-10 miles which make the range more like 70 miles. That is also assuming you not hauling down the freeway. This car punishes a heavy foot. Lol. So I assume you would be good. If it is getting tight on energy you could alway turn the AC off, but I know that would suck. The only think that I would say also is that your charge time might take too long on the standard charger for you to make that trip on the daily, unless you have the 220 charger, then you're golden.

    the greatest thing about electric cars is if you live at extremely high elevation then you can run with what is considered very powerful cars at sea level, mine at 95 percent charge will run with a srt8 challenger at 5 k feet elevation from 0 to 40 mph yes it has been tried, it feels like it loses 30 hp at 25 percent battery, these abarth tires are not holding up well, 3500 miles and they have less than half life left but it sure grips much better than those stock goobers. at full charge i can still roast these tires with traction off.

We got are fiat 500e for $16k with 32k miles on it we came up on this lil car an all my family ones to buy one too… compare of buying a Tesla for 50k you will save alot with the 500E but Try your best to find a newer fiat 500e with low mileage Like that the car can Iast you 5 to 8 years Before replacing the batteries 🪫 But even if you can pay 3 to 4000 get the batteries replaced and the car will last another 8 to 10 years it’s worth the money

    And see that's the difference between Fiat owners and Tesla owners. When Tesla owners don't like a feature that's not working properly they let it be known and Tesla addresses the issue on a bi-annual update. Fiat people are more like oh this doesn't work. Just ignore it. No, no, no. You complain to Fiat so they can address it and improve the overall experience. Don't think for a moment Fiat is not interested in what customers have to say.

      500e is a California Compliant vehicle and not likely that they will listen too hard for the few that own a Fiat 500e. Sucks but that is one of the down sides. The other side is that I'm hunting for a motor/inverter from a wrecked one so we can retrofit a DIY inverter computer board to over ride the stock and maybe even use a different power section so we can pump up the amperage to make these little beasties little rockets.

      This video was about him and not the car. We want acceleration video, time video, is ac on, why do you play music when you are driving the car. We want to hear the car not your jams.

    Don’t get high before you make an updated review. Also, embrace green. Total waste of my time. Sorry bro
