    Looking for your opinion!
    I'm as big a fan of RØDE Microphones as they come. For the longest time here on the channel, I used the NT1 exclusively for my voice on the live talk-shows. I later switched to the Procaster, now I am missing the NT1 and wondered, which one sounds better.
    They are not the same style of mic. One is dynamic, one is a condenser.
    So, I'm asking you what do you think? Using the time stamps below, tell me what mic you think sounds better, and why. Both are using almost identical eq settings. Please share your comments.

    RØDE Procaster Dynamic Mic: 6:09
    RØDE NT1 Condenser Mic: 7:32

    NT 1 is the best mic that Rode has and it’s not even close. Use the pop filter and there is no plosives. Also the clown nose on takes away from the high end giving it a more broadcasting sound. But definitely use the pop filter. It’s amazing.

    The Procaster is better for voice; the NT-1 was more sensitive and was very noisy; you could hear the plosives too much, and a few breaths. As a voice coach, that's what I hear, dude. The Procaster is fine.

      That is what I heard too. I have the NT-1 for voice and this comparison helped. I didn't know about the procaster at the time and didn't want to spend the extra money for a dynamic and the cost of a pre-amp, so I got the NT-1 for voice/talk. The other thing is it may not be as bad further away.

    Super helpful. I tend to avoid condensers for my purposes (small radio station, untreated locations, users with inconsistent mic technique), but I had been thinking about an NT1. Nope. I'll stick with my dynamics!

    • @johannesmartinus5837
      @johannesmartinus5837 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you are intending to use the NT1 for a small radio station setup then this is the wrong microphone unless you are having a studio setup where the DJ is a location inside a small area where the walls are treated with foam to prevent an echo. The NT1 is very sensitive and it will hear anything in the room from air-conditioning, fans from computers, you name it.
      But, if you have it in a small room where all those sounds are eliminated, you get the best sound ever.

  • @overdaedgebroadcasting2220

    I prefer the NT1, not sure if the Mic position was the same as the Procaster as the plosives on the NT1 reading stood out even with the Pop shield

  • @JamiePryke
    @JamiePryke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The NT1 sounds more neutral in the lower and mid frequencies but much more responsive to higher frequencies. This might help bring vocals out in a mix better than the very focused, almost V shaped sound of the procaster. That bassy tone might also interfere with other instruments. For a spoken word recording it's a very nice tone, but for some genres of music it's not as precise and clinical as the NT1 (which could be better for post processing).
    All depends on the application really. Have used Rode for years whilst studying and doing studio work and have played with an NTG1 for recording video at home and their stuff is always reliable and great sounding.

  • @Pinstripedood
    @Pinstripedood 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where did you get that foam wind screen that fits so perfectly over both? I have the NT-1 for work and the Procaster for play. Love them both, just can't talk directly into them without plosives.

  • @ThoughtsByJBrown
    @ThoughtsByJBrown 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As a Procaster owner myself I want to be swayed by my familiarity of the dynamic mic. With that said, I agree with Narratives. It is not about the mics themselves but the technique and pop filters/windscreens. Also I would say what do you prefer in a microphone as well. A condenser is great for voice over work in a treated room, but like in my case the room I am in the Procaster is better. I would say that I am going to go with the Procaster, but I am looking into the NT1 to replace my MXL 990 Condenser Mic that just died after nearly 13 years of use. I am also looking forward to the Rodecaster Pro Podcast Studio console.

    • @musicgearnetwork
      @musicgearnetwork  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that new mixing deck they have is awesome. I am using the Procaster as my main mic, because my studio is far from soundproof. Thanks much for your input as well.

    • @johannesmartinus5837
      @johannesmartinus5837 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The MXL 990 is a good microphone but it has a much higher self-noise than the RØDE NT1. Many people buy the MXL990 and upgrade it with a Neumann U 87 capsule and upgraded electronics to make it a top microphone, but unless you are going that path, take this noise floor in consideration when buying the MXL 990.

    I have to say the NT-1... it just seemed more balanced.

  • @MichaelW1980randoms
    @MichaelW1980randoms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The NT-1 gave me a smooth feedback on the details of your voice. But the Procaster gave more clarity.
    I can hear, what makes people prefer big diaphragm mikes over dynamic mikes. But then again, the big diaphragm approach comes at the cost of the mike picking up a lot more unwanted sounds and noise. I noticed that the sounds of your switch the mikes was more audible with the NT-1, than with the Procaster. And knowing from other tests, I can say it’s even more of a difference on sounds not mechanically connected to the mike. (Like typing on a keyboard)
    I’d feel more comfortable choosing the Procaster, since there would be a lot of life usage for me. And what’s more: If you don’t do a side by side comparison, the difference in sound doesn’t matter anyway.
    So I’d say don’t feel that bad for abandoning the NT-1. In the end, both mikes sound awesome!

    I'm no expert at all when it comes to mics. I listened on my good speakers at home. Both sound pretty close but the Procaster sounded slightly better to my ears. By better I mean it sounded a bit more focused. The NT1 sounded a little more airy. I every so slightly prefer the Procaster. I probably wouldn't notice if you switched back to the NT1 and didn't tell us.

      Thank you kindly! Since this video I have discontinued using the Cloudlifter. It just added so much hiss to my LIVE mix, that it was unbearable. I am using the Procaster with no added gain, but my channel strip on my Presonus AR12USB is Maxed. Still better sound overall than using the Cloudlifter. You may not need it with your Apollo. I would try without first. Save you money incase you do not need it!

    • @agambhasin

    I think the NT1. I am listening through a laptop into good quality earbuds. Although the difference is minimal, I found the Procaster more sensitive and it picked up every little noise from your mouth, the NT1 made the sound "smoother". Im not a sound expert by an stretch but thats how I heard it through my equipment.

  • @MichaelW1980randoms
    @MichaelW1980randoms 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed, that you didn’t point the RØDE Procaster directly to your mouth (as its a end adress microphone) which diminishes it’s proximity effect to some extent. At the same time, you put the NT-1 directly in front of your mouth. This makes your RØDE NT-1 sound somewhat more warm and ritch - and More „bassy“. Its hard to actually compare the two like this.

    Wonder how the nt1 sounds against the broadcaster. I own the nt1 and love if
    As far as the video : they speak for themselves, i listened in my car and can hear a high difference, but what is usually not considers is wether bass bias and presence bias and engineer is going to eq to shop the tone of the vocals. With that being said I may get the pro caster and broadcaster to add to my collection

  • @narratives568
    @narratives568 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    For people arguing that Procaster is better because NT1 is more sensitive towards plosives, it is not about mic here, if you wanna avoid plosives you need a good technique and a decent pop filter, it has nothing to do with mic quality...

      You're not wrong - but if you're working with "non-professional" talent, the procaster is going to give you better results with less work in post. The NT1 sounds way more "real" or more like it's in an actual room.

    • @johannesmartinus5837

      Without the metal pop filter that comes with the NT1 KIT this is not a good way to compare these two microphones.

    • @Cons2911
      @Cons2911 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mic is a factor. I just watched a mic shootout and different mics handles plosives differently. But it’s a mix of different factors

  • @johannesmartinus5837
    @johannesmartinus5837 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The RØDE NT1 Kit comes standard with a metal pop filter and I think you should do a new test with it. I own the RØDE NT1 too and I have the same windscreen foam cover but that is not enough if go up that close since it is a very sensitive microphone. Also when going up that close you can hear the proximity effect and your base part overrules then in that matter. I know you want to avoid noise by going up that close with the gain on the pre-amp as low as possible to avoid background noise but for this reason, the RØDE NT1 would perform better in a voice booth with a little more gain and keeping some distance compared to the RØDE Procaster that really needs it as close as possible to get the gain right.

    • @musicgearnetwork
      @musicgearnetwork  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed for testing purposes I may do it again with the metal pop filters, I have at least a 1/2 dozen of them around here. In testing process I would be find with it, but for LIVE talkshow stuff I do, I would not use the metal pop filter as it's too large and distracting (although I could hide behind it lol..) For now I have decided to use the Procaster as my main mic. Sometimes with the sock, currently now without.

    Really good video. On a non related point. I would advise anyone in Canada to stay well clear of B&H in New York. I ordered some audio equipment from B&H, the day it was to be delivered B&H had UPS cancel the delivery and return the equipment to them. Apparently they didn't have the rights to sell into Canada. The thing is it took them a month to refund me. It also raised the question did B&H have the right to reclaim equipment that at that time I legally owned? In any event this unfortunate incident left me with the impression that B&H a little more than crooks.

    Okay let me make things easier ! if you want to do voice overs just get a NT1 , if you want to do streams and podcasts , then get a Procaster.
    Dynamic mics are not good for voice overs at all because they pick up less of your actual voice , but Condenser mics record every detail in your voice ! so you need to have a good acoustic treated room for that reason if you want to do professional voice overs.
