Do wood chip piles self combust?

  • In the previous video we shared that the temperature inside our woodchip pile is 120F. A lot of you commented to raise your concerns about it self-combusting. That was our concern too so here is the result of our research.

    I’ve been piling up wood chip from my tree work for over 20 years and it’s never self combusted. My old boss did the same, piled his wood chip at least 10ft high by 30ft long - it would steam on cold winter days but it never caught a light

    I was searching for this info for an argument I was having! Thank you for the very specific and perfect answer! Wood chip piles are a very good source of many gardening solutions in large and small areas.

    We have a pulp mill here that has had combustion half a dozen times. But your right the piles are larger than most buildings

    I witnessed a freshly laid down woodchip bedding on a flower bed at a new house catch fire . It was warm outside and the bags were left in the sun before they were opened and put down.. There may have been a reaction in the bag. I don't know. I ran and got a hose and put it out.

      As a retired firefighter we had a few houses lost to spontaneous combustion of landscape mulch.

      Many times that mulch has colorants in it. That might be it

    I’ve seen sawdust piles at a pallet factory self combust. I’ve also seen flax hay bails do the same but in bot scenarios their respective stacking were huge and it garnered both companies fines.

    What a bummer. I am a big fan of spontaneous combustion.

  • @01AceAlpha
    @01AceAlpha 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As a retired firefighter, I can say that at least a handful of houses in my town alone have been lost to spontaneously combusting wood chips. This was from wood chip mulch in flower beds.
    Now, add the heat and humidity of summer and the temp of that pile might increase significantly. It might not combust,at all, ever. The spontaneity of it makes it, well, unpredictable.

    Are you a gardener? Make compost by adding grass hay or trimmings from mowing. Cover it with a tarp. I use shavings for walkways. Those big chunks suck nitrogen and take a couple years to decompose.

    As far as the woodchip pile goes it all depends on the type of woodchips it is made of because not all wood decompose at the same rate.

    If you are using hot water for your heating in your house to greenhouse, run water piping through the wood chip pile and use the hot water it generates to aid in your heating.

    • @AdventurousWay
      @AdventurousWay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had idea along the same lines: run water piping through wood chip pile to heat greenhouse directly.

    Simply any organic substance can self combust if the conditions are right, I have experienced metal milling swarf self combusting when mixed with a organic lubricant, and when out at sea in the hold of a ship it ain't no joke

    Hay has a higher combustion rating than one hundred and twenty degrees. You will see those huge round bales sitting in fields all year until they are needed. Even the bales, I have broken them apart many times and yes, they were hot, not to the point of combustion.

      Not the same, but I've seen garden mulch burst into flames at the local allotments. I can understand people's concern even if it's unfounded

  • @MasterKenfucius
    @MasterKenfucius 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nobody can say "I've seen a pile self-combust!" ... that's HOGWASH. You weren't watching it 24x7, so you cannot, for sure, know where the first really started. Remember that there are teenagers running around everywhere causing mischief. Sorry, but unless you had a camera focused on that pile for its entire existence then you can't say you saw one happen.

    • @AdventurousWay
      @AdventurousWay  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fortunately, witnessing something with our own eyes isn't the only way to know what happened. It is well understood that large piles of organic matter undergo exothermic chemical reactions - another common example being fires starting in piles of wet, unwrapped hay bales. Blaming these on "mischievous teenagers" is a gross misunderstanding of reality.

    What amazes me is that this poor lady has to make a video explaining "facts" to fools, why does she need fact checking? Do that for yourselves before commenting, or was that not as simple as trolling her. Good luck to her and her family, best wishes.

    • @joshuacollins385
      @joshuacollins385 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not malicious, people were just worried. I've seen garden mulch burst into flames during heatwaves, so I get where they're coming from.
      People also don't know the volume of the pile or the temperature in this area during the height of summer, so looking up the numbers on their own doesn't necessarily clear anything up

    • @AdventurousWay
      @AdventurousWay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @centurion twofiverzoone thanks for the concern, but it wasn't a bother. We had done the research anyways because we were curious about the answer, so then it was easy enough to share it on video.

    This is really confusing when you measure things in farenheit. It would be good if you could do them with normal measurements, so that we don't need to convert the measurements.

    • @AdventurousWay
      @AdventurousWay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where do you live? Most of our audience is in the US, but if we have more people watching outside the US, I would probably start putting conversions on the screen in both units (F/C, miles/km, etc.). Would that be helpful?

    • @RyanHellyer
      @RyanHellyer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My location varies. I live all over the world.
      And yes, that would be helpful. It's a bit annoying when people use obscure local measurement systems.
