I second your recommendation to wear a mask if you stir up fungal spores. I shoveled a fungally pile that left me with a cough that lasted a month, and prompted me to get a covid test, which was negative.
So true! We want to grow healthy food but forget to keep ourselves safe from simple things like turning the wood chips or compost pile. Garden safe is just important. I’ve been thinking about this for sometime now. Things like getting a tetanus shot if your not up to date. It’s found in soils and dust. Knee pads to keep your knees safe not only from impacts but things stabbing you like a sharp wood chip.
Great! I had a steaming pile of chips this winter. The chips where dropped off in November before the snow and then covered with snow. After a few days there was steam rising out of the pile. I don’t think it would have caught fire but I did go in and break up the pile and the steam stopped. Even with the outside air temp being in the teens the pile was reading over 130 F.
Hi Angela. I want to start a small compost pile. But the only place I have for it is very shady. Will it work? I was just going to do it on the ground.

I've experienced the fungal spores. Really surprised me how many spores there were, in a pile 3 days old!

Yes, and directly in contact with soil is the best

Thanks!
Dragon gloves?
Yo I'm saying, forget about the woodchips lets talk about those dragonscale mittens!
What happened to your hand?! Were you bitten by a dragon!?
