    Some things to keep in mind when pronouncing Estonian:
    The letter Ä is like a in the word cat or the a in ash.
    Ö is like the vowel in "bird" (especially the British pronunciation of bird).
    Ü is kinda like the u in pure but not really - listen to google translate.
    Õ is tricky, nothing like it in English - better listen to google translate as well.
    J is like y in young, all the time. It's never like joy or Jones!
    Double vowels sound the same as a single vowels, they're just a bit longer.
    O sounds like the oo in poor.
    U is the sound of oo in poop.
    E sounds like the e in egg.
    A sounds like the a in are.
    I is like the ea in peace.
    Also, the emphasis is usually on the first syllable of the word (there are exceptions but it's a safe bet if you emphasize the 1st one)
    Looks like you hit the gold mine :) If there's something Estonians love, it's being mentioned by people from other countries.

    • @BrianVelez
      @BrianVelez  6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I did just hit a goldmine! Thank you for taking all that time to type this out! you rock! I have developed a lot of love for the Baltic states specially since they are known so little about. I personally believe they are a little piece of heaven here on earth. :)

      O is like in lounge

    • @raifthemad
      @raifthemad 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@markkus-oliverollo2380 No it's not, spelling "lounge" in estonina phonetics would be "laundš" not "loundš" our O sounds like o in "chop" or "shop". The OP's "poor" does not cut the mustard either, its o's would sound something like "puuör" not really a full ö but a hint of one.
      and Õ sounds quite similar to the first half of o in "most" or "total" for instance if you wrote those words down with phonetically estonian alphabet they would be "mõust", "tõutl", well sort of, our vowels are more pronounced but it's close.

      Juustuburger is more like "You used to burger" and not "Yews to burger".
      Technically you remove one u and that'd be the closest equivalent to the pronounciation.
      "Yousedtoburger" try saying it like that lel xD
      So "Ju" is more like "You" keep that in mind and you'll have it covered.

    I like the way he says juustuburger. I'm not born estonian but I've live in estonia for 7 years now and I had trouble with letter j too at first. I used to say juustuburger as yustuburger. Now my estonian is acceptable in my own opinion.
    Here's some words that my friends still tease me about...
    Jõululaululaulja - Christmas song singer
    Raudteeülesõidukoht - rail crossing
    Entsüklopeedia - encyclopedia
    Küsimusi - questions
    Also many estonian words have more than one meaning that I learned by making mistakes. Good luck with the words you need it. 😎

      Brian Velez Oh, and if there ever is part 3, please don’t aspirate Estonian K, P, T. They are never aspirated. They are basically English G, B, D. K and G etc only have a quantitative difference (except at the beginning of a word where there is none).
      Ü is basically a high whistling sound (the mouth and tongue position is identical IMO).
      Õ sounds more like E than O. It used to called sth like ‘an E more in the back’ by the Germans. The tip of the tongue is quite rolled back. (Among others, Korean and Russian and Chinese have at least one similar sound.)
      Have fun!

    • @kahurikuul
      @kahurikuul 6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @RolandKontson
    @RolandKontson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    BTW - google translate's pronunciation of Estonian words has come a long way (still some weird emphasizes etc) - the speaker icon at the bottom of the box.
    "narivoodi moodi voodi viidi voodi poodi" -> "narivoodi moodi voodi" a bed resembling a bunk bed, "viidi" was taken, "voodi poodi" (to) a shop selling beds - split the sentence into meaningful groups, though between each group there's a little pause in the pronunciation as well.
    Our letters are mostly pronounced the same way consistently - bit similarly like your pronunciation symbols.
    The high percentage comes from entertainment value / interest of how other's see us and how well they do with our language.

    1. Midday- KESKPÄEV
    2. pretty- ILUS or u can say KENA
    3. (Someone who's chasing someone else) or like a persecutor- TAGAAJAJA

    Naah don’t mind these haters at all!!
    You’re an American, it’s really impressive how you’re trying to speak it and how you actually succeed in it.
    I actually hope that you’ll visit Estonia some day and make a video about that 😛
