I agree, there's no such thing as muddy colours. But it's important to know why some reds and blues don't mix vibrant purples etc. I've never thought about it in terms of mixing colours that are closer to each other on the colour wheel though, so thanks for little tip!
Most welcome!
This is absolutely terrific, the perfect intro to color theory! Particularly great job showing practical examples of complements and neutrals!
I appreciate that! Sometimes it’s great to go back to the basics. 😌
Which mix do you use to do a orange like cadmium orange hue ? I end it up doing more magenta ish oranges them yellow vibrant oranges that I love more especially when I try do the color with magenta or red than use the fabric orange!!
I think this could be a series of doing or mixing colors, and have one of neutral mix like beiges , titanium buff cousins , I try but I didn't get the correct mix !!!😭😭
Hello Emily , are you sure about the "jungle green " at 8:05 ? maybe it's an editing issue , the green you've shown looks more like a PB29 + PY3 mix . I've taken out my brush and paint to double check . 😁
I did the test and it gives that color if you use more pthalo bue than yellow. With ultramarine blue I get a warmer mossier green.
Yep, I'm sure! You can get different looks by adjusting the ratio of the two colors. This mix had more Phthalo, less yellow.
I love watching your videos & I know you have to time them, but as a senior it's hard to follow you at times because you talk to fast. I would have to watch this several time to catch all the info. Thanks
Well done, thank you! I'm with you on the so-called muddy colours. I think they're beautiful! I love that earthy purple. 🥰
EMILY!!! My eyes have been opened. I have been struggling with color mixing and color temperature and this video has finally helped me understand. You explain it so nicely, especially for someone who is trying to teach herself. Thank you sooo much, now it makes sense. :)
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching!
Very good and informative video. The only thing where you would not see too much difference, if you would use single benzimida yellow for both mixing green and orange tones. But of course, if you have already two different yellows on the palttte, then you should use them as explained in the video. I would also recommend to use phtalo green PG36 for mixes, that would give you much wider range to mix greens and turqoise shades. But other colors are very good choice for mixes. phtalo blue, ultramarine, quinaqridone magenta and sarlet/ pyrrole red.
Yes to Phthalo green! Great addition to any palette.
you always explain everything so well 😍
I so glad real exams don't expect answers at that speed 😅
Colours are only muddy if you're trying to mix a bright. They all have their place when you need them.
🤯 AMAZING!!!
I am brand new to learning art and this video along with your course is fabulous!!
Thank you for this tutorial on color mixing. The so called muddy colors are earthy and beautiful.
I agree! ;)

Great video, clear and to the point.
Much appreciated!
What are the names/brand of the 3 primary colors that you used for your color wheel in this video? Thank you!
So well explained. And thanks for reclaiming the earthy colors.... The term muddy colors always makes me feel odd, especially as a brown-skinned person!
Hullo Emily, Such a nice basic color mixing video! Thanks for showing everyone the easiest way to get the color you want when mixing! Thank You.
This is the best explanation of the color wheel, color theory I've seen. Esp getting vibrant vs earthy colors. Thank you for imparting some valuable wisdom.
I'm sitting here giggling about being mentioned by my favorite watercolor teacher (with visuals even LOL). :-) Thank you, Emily, for what you did here, dividing the color wheel into thirds instead of halves. I was taught to divide the wheel into halves, with the warm colors (with yellow-orange in the middle) on one half and the cool colors (with blue in the middle) on the other half. Dividing it into thirds makes the warm blue vs cool blue a LOT easier to understand.
I have become so dependent on convivence colors because the color wheel (warms vs cools) still baffles me after years of painting.
It's getting cold, please stay warm. Thanks Sir.
Great lesson! Thx!
Amazing video!!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!

Really informative, but it felt very rushed.
I might watch this a few more times, at slower speed. With pauses in between
My problem, too many colors and brands. But I love them all😵💫
Thank you for making this so clear. For the longest time I couldn't understand why my purples were so dull when I wanted a pure purple! But yes, the earthy mixes are beautiful, too and definitely needed.
A little too beginner level for me. Sorry.
I’ve been painting for over 40 years. This is information that I use EVERY time I paint. Beginner? No. Great refresher? Definitely! And it was well explained too. Just something to think about
Then don't watch it? What a very ego centric comment
If we only give her positive feedback, how will she know what we want?
