  • For this video, I am using Kristie to show you just how easy it is to load your kayak on a car or SUV. It is really more about technique than strength, so don't be intimidated about loading a fishing kayak and don't think that you have to be able to lift the weight of the entire kayak.

Great demo. A good technique for folks who don't want to spend the extra money for a side load or roller load extension for their roof racks. Definitely encouraging for people who are maybe unsure of buying a larger, heavier kayak because they don't want to deal with the load/unload difficulties.

I'm going to try this! I'm a 115 lb woman with a 50 lb, 16' kayak, and it's been quite a challenge loading & unloading it, to say the least. My car doesn't have side rails, but I may just throw my foam camping pad over my Kia Soul perpendicular & in between the crossbars, and try this out. It would be so nice not to have to rely on a second person every time I want to go paddling. Thanks for the post!

    • @ChadHooverFishing

Try using a tacky yoga mat or a wet towel, both work great. A friend of mine (lady about your size) bought two suction cups with a little lanyard and connected them to the corners of a carpet remnant and she uses that by sticking the suction cups on top and letting the piece of carpet hang over the side. They have them at most craft stores, I think she got hers at either Autozone or Harbor Freight.

I just ordered a Vibe Seaghost 110 and I was debating if to add a hitch to my Kia Sportage and putting it on my 5x8 utility trailer, but I'll go your route! on the roof, however I do have a panoramic sun roof but I think once it lays on the roof I can turn the stern around and lift strait at an angle with out touching the glass and straight onto the cross bars. Do you think that will work? Thanks in advance.

Could be a dumb question... why wouldn't you load it top down? Other than to not have to pull the seat, ect. out.. would think it would be more aerodynamic flipped over.. planning on loading on top too, but was thinking flipped over.. am I missing something?? Excellent video, but I have one question about roof racks. For a SS127 what would you consider the minimum distance between the bars on the roof rack?

Love the tip/joke style videos. I straight up just bought a truck instead. haha. Blessed to make the money to afford one. Great stuff, Chad.

Trucks today have such a short bed - more than half of my kayak would be hanging off the gate.

They definitely are short for the most part. My ascend sticks out about a foot past the tailgate when it's down.

Very useful tips. Can you suggest me some low budget fishing kayak that I can carry on Nissan Xterra roof rack and that can support me and my German Shepard on the lake. Thank you and I subscribed.

I'm ALWAYS worried if I brake the car suddenly, will the kayak fly off the front?... (especially going downhill?) This is the main concern that prevents me to buy a kayak... Will the strap able to keep the kayak from moving forward/backward?

Do you think this would work on a kayak carrier rack? The kind that attaches to the Criss bars and holds the kayak at an angle

Does it matter if the kayak sits up there right side up, or upside down? It seems to me it would be more aerodynamic upside down, but I've seen them mounted both ways. Is there a correct way to mount it on top?
