  • I review the Jack Daniel's American Single Malt finished in Oloroso casks. This is a duty free expression from Jack Daniel's, made from 100% malted barley, matured in new white American oak for 4 years and finished in Oloroso sherry casks for a further two years.
American Single Malt is a relatively new category where just recently the rules and regulations have been finalised. Jack Daniel's as one of, if not the biggest name in American Whiskey wants it's own space in this new category and here we have it.
I admit I did struggle to fit it into a box but nonetheless grateful to have a new category in whisky. Hope you enjoy it, cheers!

"It does not smell like a scotch and it does not smell like a bourbon..." Interesting!
I still have a soft spot in my heart for Gentleman Jack, intrigued by this one.

I love Jack and their line up so I was very interested in trying this and I'm not upset because it definitely is a left field one. Would love to hear your thoughts on it when you try 🥃

Fabulous review! I appreciate your thoughts a lot and enjoy them! Scottish single malts are my favourite and very much my 'go to' for collecting and buying for enjoyment and cracking open to enjoy and share generously!! I also love learning about single malts from different countries! So interesting about the nosing! I don't love overly sweet like a sweeter bourbon. Without spice and with being so sweet and sour like a cheap wine I have to say I'd give this a big pass. Fascinating about how this malt is distilled! For me my love is with the Scottish single malts because I truly love the distillation process and enjoying the delicious nosings and flavours on my palette. Everything is interesting to learn. If this expression was available in a bar I would check it out in a dram but I wouldn't buy based on this review. I can absolutely understand from your thoughts why this plays with your head. I appreciate your thoughts so much! Cheers! 🙂

Christine thank you! You've been like a breath of fresh air recently with your comments, I appreciate the support and the input 🥃
I'm completely with you when it comes to distillation, that is the reason why I love 'traditional' single malts. Not being a massive bourbon fan, this one reminded me more of bourbons than malts. I suppose with it being 100%malted barley but not produced in a copper pot still, it'll be more apt to compare this one with Nikka Coffey Malt or a Loch Lomond Single Grain. This'll be my homework :)
Definitely try it at a bar if you see but yeah I don't think it's worth the price. Again thanks for joining in, I appreciate it 😃🥃

I just had a pour of the Westward Single Malt amd it reminds me of a Scotch. I don't know what type of still they use. I couldn't find any info on their website. it sound very different from the JD.

Maybe it was the charcoal mellowing that put me off, I don't know. I really need to do more research on American Single Malts to have a proper opinion. @@jimreichel1466

Nice review. I appreciate your viewpoint as it is not from the USA or the UK. While I have not tried this American single malt, I have tried a few others. They are: Stranahan's (Blue Peak, Original, Single Barrel Barrel Proof, and Sherry Finished). The Sherry Finished is execellent, the others are good. I also have tried Westland, which is also good and Westward, which is very good. While there are quite a number of American Single Malts, only a limited number I find in central Texas.

Ah now that you mentioned it, I did try the Stranahan's Original before! This did stump me in a way no other single malt did from around the world. I mostly think this is because the distillation is not done by copper pot stills. Seeing as how there are no limitations on the type of stills being used for producing American Single Malts, I think I'll have differing views depending on how they're produced. I'm looking forward to trying more and more American Single Malt to get my palate acclimated. Exciting times ahead 😃 Thank you for checking in 🥃

I'd love to try this stuff. But I don't see it coming to my country any time soon (hopefully I'm wrong and someone does start importing it).

I believe it is a duty free expression so you'd have to travel to be able come across it. Don't sweat it too much though, it's not a unicorn :)
