- In today's episode I dive deep into the Tribe life of the Mentawai people on Siberut Island, located off the coast of Padang, West Sumatra. During this episode I will how you how the Mentawai tribes eat, sleep, walk, talk and how their view is of the 'world outside'. I even get a Mentawai Tattoo, the oldest tattoo art in the World. Going to meet the Mentawai tribe feels like jumping hundreds of years back in time. Hunting with poisoned arrows, eating live worms, use pigs as currency and so much more. It's fascinating! Besides all that, they speak their own language too, Bahasa Mentawai, which I try to learn.

I have been to Siberut Island (Mentawai Archipelago) ten times. I crossed the island up and down for weeks through the forest and the coasts. I also wrote two books (published in French). One of my many trips and without doubt one of the most extraordinary. Only go there if you have a sense of sharing.

"Not good out there. Jakarta, Padang. Buy food. All money.. even to go pee pee. :) Here its not so. We DO want to live there but after 2-3 days.. no money - how? Our life here is rich. For food - sago, tapioca, banana, plantain.. whatever that we need its all here. If we live here with little money, we can do quite a bit. For my needs its better here in Mentawai.. Tourists come in we guide, we get money to buy rice and sugar. But if there's no tourist we will make do with less."

I have been there for almost 2 weeks for my documentaries, deep in Gorottai and Madobak village (2019). I felt the same relaxing yet adventurous time in my life without any connection, using pompong, wet and muddy walks through the jungle, eating sagoo and cooked sagoo's worms, playing with bobcats, and the clear river's water is kind of a gem to have around, too bad my drone was on my body when I fell into sagoo's water to stop at the waterfall which the water was very nice to drink for. The worst yet crazy thing to remember is when I was trapped in heavy rain in the middle of nowhere, no houses, no safe place, and the only option I had was to keep going or get trapped again by the floods if I stop. Ahh I really miss all the excitement. Thank you Kris, you call back my memories.

Kristian word of advice on the Garmin Inreach Mini you have to register it on the local BASARNAS (Search and Rescue) so your PLB or ELT (Personal Locator Beacon/Emergency Locator Transmitter) SOS can get recognized

Was in Mentawai in 2013, did a similar trip/tour like this one but shorter. Even back then and moreover as a fellow Indonesian, I wasnt sure how I felt about it. Privileged and humbled of course, but also weirdly I feel like exploiting something. Perhaps the only time in Indonesia where I really felt like a tourist but a different one.
I couldn't begin to imagine how you feel.
This was so worth the wait and definitely not tight on the sack!! LOL!! That line cracked me up. So many great moments in this video and was such a pleasure to watch. I really enjoyed seeing the life of the Mentawai people. Thank you for showing so many different aspects of life there. You had me laughing so hard watching you try and eat that worm. The pig scene, while difficult to watch, is a reminder about how far removed we are from our food source here in the West. Thanks for explaining why you wore the same shirt for 6 days. 😁 With all the adversity you faced in the process of making this video you persevered and put out some top notch content. Keep up the great work and the adventures showing the beauty of Indonesia.

Wow, this brings back so many memories. I visited Siberut 27 years ago, and I am wondering if Anam Toply is the young shamen who visited us at the place we stayed with an older shaman who I believe was called something like Laitek Pilipus. I have noticed that now even most of the Mentawi people are wearing wellies, when they were all barefoot, although I remember sliding around in the mud in my trainers. I also remember the pigs and not in a good way, as I recall fighting them off with a stick when trying to go to the loo! I have a traditional tattoo that Laitek Pilipus did for me, and I always smile when I see it from such amazing memories. Thanks for giving me a trip down memory lane and I am so glad that these lovely people have managed to carry on living their lives in the same way.

amazing this made me recall my childhood living with the natives of the Palawan Tribe in our farm in Palawan. Until now they live in our land as the care taker of the forest. And yes they are family to us as we are to them too.
