His pride, her anger, his confession, her skepticism, his honesty, her disbelief, his reassurance, her distrust, his final plea, her truth, but still their love unresolved because that’s love.

Love does not need to be unresolved. Everyone would do well to learn about Attachment Theory to understand relationship dynamics. It's a road-map to understanding each other, and ourselves in relation to others.
What I observe in this dynamic is that he seems to be someone with "secure attachment" trying hard to stay grounded and kind and keep the boat on an even keel, but her "anxious preoccupied" attachment style (fear of abandonment, lack of trust) her from meeting him in the middle. Her petulance is strong enough to rock any boat.

What's astonishing to me about this track is the fact that it really doesn't have anything resembling a chorus, doesn't adhere to or even acknowledge traditional pop music structure, and yet it still manages to be utterly memorable. I can't stop hearing it in my head.

They use a refrain instead of a chorus, they even mention it in the refrain. Its where you end each verse with the same line. Good example is the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald.

"The Sargasso Sea is the only sea on earth without a coastline, as it is surrounded by a gyre resulting from multiple currents converging. Bird is probably indicating that falling in love is like being in a vortex."

    • @caldar76
      @caldar76 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

My thought is somewhat different... If he's a skeptic and doesn't believe that everything happens for a reason.. then how did he find a person to love out of all the great masses of people... and I think her point is that it doesn't matter .. he loves her.
I love the music and listen to it over and over but... one thing I've noticed in Fiona's videos is she puts the emotions of the song on her face. Others have mentioned it in these comments. You can see this character is both in love and wanting to be less harsh, more forgiving but something gets in the way... somethings upset her so much she can't forgive. And he seems obvlivious to it all. I need to study Bird's face more. It's obvious he's aiming for the same thing but I think Fiona is just so much better at it.
It's really amazing to watch these two in this video .. and then see the one "Fiona Apple Rocks" has entitled "Fiona Apple and Andrew Bird - Werewolf" and how they act toward each other. It's obvious they have respect for each other. It's interesting to see the dynamic.

    • @rachelmorris5555

I read a description of the Sargasso sea. They called it
"This strange and unique creation of nature"
I thought that was a beautiful metaphor for love or the person you are in love with.
A vortex also makes sense too.

I've always adored this song. Fiona apple first c.d was one of my first ever bought c.d's when I was about ten. Saved up for it, and instead of kids toys and other things I said I wanted to support her and buy her c.d. Found Andrew Bird much, much later, but I'm truly thankful for you both creating this. It means so much, and I always wondered what it would have sounded like if she worked on a song with a male artist and this is better than my imagination. The micro expressions and control you both have while performing is beyond amazing. ❤❤❤

I think this song mainly talks about being skeptic about how a sane, reasonable person could ever love someone that is frail and submerged by self-doubt. How, amongst all the people in the world, someone could choose a singular individual, and about how, at every single chance we have, we are able to argue against this possibility instead of appreciating this opportunity.

Came to Bird through Fiona. Went to see him based solely on the power of this video. Watched many of his videos online to get somewhat up to speed and was pretty much blown away by his live performance. Incredible band backing him up. Great chemistry in this video, due largely in part to the brilliance of director Philip Andelman, I would love to see them collaborate again. Bird is brilliant, and Fiona, well, she's in a class all her own.

This video may be my new favorite thing. Their voices are fantastic together, achieving just the right tension.

I've been here like hundred times and still can't leave without Fiona's angry face in the end. Love them both!

love this music video. it's simple and yet not like lil touches with the instruments and the way they look at each other

Once I read an interview of Fiona where she said that she doesn't care about other people's music. Lately, you only see her playing other people's music. One can change I believe.

I don't remember her ever expressing that. I recall her saying she felt sometimes that she wanted to listen to music but it would be too emotionally difficult because she is too influenced by it.

+Jane Does Even more, I remember the interviewer ask her wich bands/musicians she liked most and she replied that: "I don't care about other people's music" so she didn't know wich bands/musicians she might like because she didn't listen to any... escept old jazzy music I believe.

From bill withers buddy holly cy coleman duke ellington beetles jimmy hendrix. collaborations with nikel creek, elvis costello, johnny cash. showing your ignorance here buddy.

It's like Meryl Streep...anything that Fiona has to do with is automatically worthwhile, and probably great...and this is no exception
