    The Saturn port of VF2 is way more appealing to me than the PS2 port, despite the latter featuring fully 3d backgrounds and being a console generation ahead.The Saturn port has brighter colours,a seemingly higher resolution and generally much better image quality.

    Watching this over and over when I was still a Megadrive owner, it felt like the future in a way nothing since then ever has.

    I still have my copy of the Saturn preview VHS tape, I probably get as much nostalgia watching that as I do any other VHS tape I own. I watched it several times before getting my Saturn, still, with all that exposure, I wasn't prepared for how blown away I'd be when finally getting to play these games! It's scary to think that without this VHS, it might have been a PlayStation I purchased In May 96 instead of the Saturn so I owe a lot to it because I don't think my late teens would have been as fun without it!

    Holy hell, I remember this! I had this tape before I had a Saturn, and was watching it over and over again in anticipation for that Christmas. Same would happen with the Dreamcast, which had an introduction by Tommy Boyd if I recall. Damn, what a time to be fan of games!

    Thanks for sharing this. I had this tape many, many years ago.
    I remember games Magazines at the time calling VF2, VC and SR the 'Big Three'. All fantastic ports.

    I can still remember the feeling of my jaw hitting the floor the first time I saw VF2 running on the demo booth in my local Electronics Boutique. To this day, I still play Virtua Cop on a 41" rear projection CRT. I agree, I also prefer VC 1 over the sequel, it just feels more arcade perfect.

    Awesome! I had no idea the Saturn existed until my parents bought me mine for my birthday. I'd been pining for a Super Nintendo for years and really wanted to play Super Metroid until that point. Suddenly, I owned Virtua Cop 1&2, Virtua Fighter 1&2, and Daytona USA! I spent so many hours switching back and forth between these games. More followed. My physical collection is going to grow again this holiday season, too! I got 4 games last Christmas. Hoping to grab 20 this year.

    Loved this tape, still have it. I remember taking it to a mates house and putting it into their video player in the main living room lol, even my mates parents watched the tape. It won't come as a surprise that my mate got a Saturn with Virtua Cop for xmas 👍. I got the Virtua Fighter bundle plus Clockwork knight and Victory Goal 😁, happpppy dayzzzzz. Simply the most memorable Xmas ever, thanks to this tape.

    Just got my Saturn out of the loft, bought myself a Saroo and I'm gonna indulge myself in some classics! Never had one growing up, went from Mega drive to Psx, but I really wish I had. Same with DC, absolutely missed out. If only there was a time machine.

    Doesn't really matter but if I recall correctly VF2 wasn't shown at the ECTS, we were bussed over to Sega's HQ where the demo pods were playing in the lobby. It was the highlight of the day for me.

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The source for that information was Sega Saturn Magazine (issue 1, page 40) which states a 20% complete build was shown at the Berlin IFA show as well as London ECTS in 1995.

    • @CarJacka
      @CarJacka หลายเดือนก่อน

      @SEGAGuys Fair enough. They probably just lumped the Sega demos together with the ECTS as it was held at the same time just at another location. My mate bought a video camera with him that day and annoyingly filmed the whole thing, he uploaded to it TH-cam long ago but I never saw it as I hated being filmed.

    I wonder how much Sega paid for the shipping costs for all those VHS tapes to come with that magazine lol.
    But yeah man, i can perfectly imagine how hyped I would've been to have that tape.
    prorbably the same hypeness that I got every other month from the Dreamcast Magazine always coming with a demo-disc!
    (did the U.K. Dreamcast Magazines come with demo discs as well?)

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah mate, we got demo discs and the official Dreamcast mag also came with a promo VHS.
      The publisher for the official UK magazine changed though, which means we lost Richard Leadbetter’s and his team that made SSM so good to read.

    The main things that made the PlayStation more appealing outside of Japan was Final Fantasy VII and much larger library. But I prefer the Saturn in Japan over the PlayStation and N64 any day. What a fantastic system and so many great titles. Some of the best fighting games and arcade ports ever released. Lots of obscure gems that stayed in Japan and look very Japanese.
    This is one of the most interesting consoles that gets extremely overlooked.

    Watched this about 13 billion times before getting my Saturn in the early months of 1996.
    I'm sure this video also had World Series Baseball on it, along with Wing Arms and others... I've never quite got "The wind up.. .and the pitch!" from WSB out of my brain ever since! Am I mis-remembering or is there a bit extra at the end of this vid?

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@danpacey yeah, the footage of Wing Arms, World Series Baseball, NHL All Star Hockey, Cyber Speedway and other lesser games was left out to keep the video more streamlined.

    Saturn version has superior gameplay to arcade version? Erm..No. the arcade version has beautiful gameplay mechanics that recreate various road surfaces- a first.
    For Saturn, the handling was ingeniously recreated in d-pad form, it replicates the gameplay feeling of the arcade.
    The Saturn version does not play ‘better’ than the arcade, come on SEGA Guys!

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The arcade version does not replicate the feeling of different terrains the way the Saturn game does.
      I suggest you watch Pandamonium's 4 hour SEGA Rally documentary if you haven't already. Mizuguchi-san goes into detail about the Saturn port and the meticulous development of it.
      The handling mechanics of the Saturn version are unique to the system, Mizuguchi-san told the CS team working on the Saturn game to "create a game that leaves the arcade version in the dust". Mizuguchi-san and the CS team even brought in real life Japanese rally driver, Yoshio Fujimoto (who drove the Toyota Celica) to make "Saturn Sega Rally's physics even more lifelike". Fujimoto says on the film, "the arcade game is close to real driving but not close enough".
      The arcade has force feedback and different degrees of vibration depending on surface, but the Saturn game conveys the feeling, the weight, the grip, and the looseness of different terrains through a simple d-pad with no force feedback or rumble feature by way of enhanced driving physics that elevate it beyond the arcade game ... and this isn't just our opinion; it's a widely accepted and documented fact, and the view and goal of Mizuguchi-san himself.

    • @nickbond6447
      @nickbond6447 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SEGAGuys That SEGA Rally video is legendary!
      No doubt the team wanted to make a better game. Leaves it in the dust content wise, absolutely. You can change the handling mechanics, have more modes etc. As a SEGA rally fanatic even I was never aware how much effort was put in to boost the realism. Content and physics are much better.
      However, I return to my point "The gameplay of the Saturn version is superior to the arcade". Physics alters gameplay, 'realism', changes gameplay. The team set out to make a better game in content with more realistic handling. More realistic handling is NOT a measure to say gameplay is better.
      The force feedback and vibration done its part in making the arcade game 'feel' so amazing. The gameplay of the arcade is fun and frantic, and more 'realistic' in the sense you actually feel the surfaces, steer the wheel and press the pedals.
      A more realistic comment is to say both versions are good in their own ways (gameplay wise)
      Saturn SEGA Rally is my favorite game ever, oh I would kill to have the arcade version also!
      Loving your content by the way, keep it up 🙂
