The vocals are that way on purpose, I believe it is because apparently a leak or something of the song blew up and people loved that version, it wasn’t natively recorded leak, so the vocals sounded distant and apparently The Weeknd went through many more versions to achieve the sound of the leak, it’s all mixed professionally so it’s all intentional

I mean, his voice sounds beautiful to me in this song and it hits so hard emotionally. When that bass hits I can’t help singing along and I feel it SO powerfully. The idea of only calling someone when it’s late and your Fed up and you’re filter is gone (the real me) connects on a real level.

If you're a faan of his mostly hits, which i guess you are. You must check his 1st album that was his masterpiece, known as Trilogy. It is a comiplation of 3 mixtapes, House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence. Thats his best album so far. I confirm you wouldn't regret it.
fun fact: He played the House of Balloons theme track on the Halftime Superbowl Show.
