Chicken and slippery dumplings was the name for it on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I remember hunting down a recipe for it years ago on a blog from Delaware. They called it “Yardbird and Slicks” which is hilarious! I love the detail you put into your recipe. ❤
Wow! Thank you! Been looking for "slickers" for close to 40 years. My great uncle used to make these in the 70's, but his recipe died with him. I am surprised to hear that it is a Southern dish. He was from Chicago. The Slickers look exactly as I remember them, but I seem to remember his sauce being more white, closer to a "biscuits and gravy" sauce.
I went through the same thing for as many years. My mother made this all the time in the 60’s from a recipe a relative sent her from Shreveport LA. Mom Passed away in 1972 and we never found the recipe. She would also make it with leftover ham. I searched for years without success and then just was determined to get it right through trial and error. This is pretty darn close to my memory ! Enjoy and thank you for watching!
I’ve heard of this dish being called chicken and pastry before… chicken and slickers is a new one for me! Looks absolutely delicious, I’m a huge dumpling fan!! Will have to give this a try!
Growing up in Eastern N Carolina, everybody’s Mom and Grandma made chicken and pastry. Always simple, affordable, delicious, and appreciated. Great memories.
