My guess would be that IU suddenly incorporating more American influences into her MVs with this album is that she intends to go more global in her reach. Historically, she has stayed predominantly in Asia, but that's changing this year with her first tour of the U.S., so it's unlikely to be just a coincidence that a song talking so heavily about flying and no longer choosing to stay in a place that's so 'smooth' (ie. safe) happens to coincide with her having a full-scale world tour.
I don't like this video, although I like the song itself. To me, the video seems to be trashing the United States. Really, trash everywhere, piles of garbage? Come on, IU would never show that in her own country, and yes, it does exist there too.

What you see is definitely up to your interpretation. That’s not what I got from the MV, personally.
