    I have now made nearly a dozen of these. I love making them and they have been super well received.
    I even made a hollowing scraper out of a cheap scraper I wasn't using. Such great inspiration!

    Excellent easy to follow video. Well done 👏.
    Personally I would use a cellulose food and toy safe sanding sealer thinned with cellulose thinners 50/50. It penetrates and dries in seconds .De-nib with 600 grit abrasive and finish with a microcrystalline food and toy safe wax.

    Excellent demo, Mike, with some good reminders of some useful practices like raising the grain for sanding. I’ll be grinding a hollower, too. First grandchild is six weeks old, so time to get turning!

    Nice project. Love that you turned both right and left handed. I am right handed but switch to left handed turning a lot to get better body positioning for the cut, it is something I encourage when I demo

    love that bead cutter! Think I'll get a couple. The 1/8" size would work great to put equally spaced groves in some of my wood pens.

    Enjoyed the video, Mike. Gives me some ideas I want to try. You have a very steady and practiced hand and your cuts are very clean. Just curious, are you left-handed or do you turn equally well with both hands?

    It ist a Vers very nice design of your baby rattle!
    A wood researcher told me any time ago that Maple wood is also medium poisonous for babies. Last time i turned ans ball shaped rattles and fish shaped rattles from cherry wood and wild Apple wood. 😃.
    Do you think that Epoxy glue ist better than white PVA woodglue to protect against cracks of the thin wall of the hollowed bulbs?

    Excellent tutorial on fun project. QQ: You use water to raise the grain whereas many others use alcohol, why don’t you use alcohol since it dries faster.

      I have found water to raise the grain more than alcohol does. But I do use alcohol on most projects. -Mike 😊

    This was terrific Mike! Thanks for this. You mention the possibility of using non-toxic wood dye. I’ve tried to search toxicity of dyes. I have Chestnut dyes from Craft Supplies. Do you know about their toxicity? Other brands that are non-toxic for toys?

      For toys, the Chestnut and Artisan dye would work just fine. They are both alcohol based and once the dye has dried you are good to go. However, for food use turnings I'd recommend using a food coloring dye.

    Very nice. What tool handle do I need for the Beading cutters? Also could use a glass marble for the rattle? Thanks David

      The beading cutters fit on the Pen Turner, Easy Start Tools, and Easy Rougher; the 3/8" beading cutter only fits on the Easy Rougher. I don't think there is enough internal volume to fit marbles, I'd recommend the corn kernels or dried peas.

    Very cool, what do you think about using stainless steel bearings for the inside fill? I have a Grandson coming in March so getting into the wood toy making now.

      Steel bearings might make the rattle to heavy, and could hurt if a baby accidentally hits them self with it.

      This is used to polish CA finishes and Acrylics. I wouldn't recommend using them on bare wood.
