Please do a bio on Collective Soul! Frontman Ed Roland spent about a decade in 80s hair bands and New Wave bands before his breakout hit Shine! He made a demo album of songs in which he played almost all the instruments on almost all the songs. He labeled the fake band Brothers and Brides and had his younger brother give it to a college radio station. The station played Shine, which used a drum machine, and it took off to huge success! Ed quickly pulled together a band from his small town in Stockbridge GA and changed the name to Collective Soul. The band would arguably become the most played Rock band on the radio in the 90s and the Rock band with the most #1 albums in the 90s. Over the years, the band would have to deal with a manager who was stealing money, a backstabbing bandmate, a bandmate struggling with addiction, a label who wouldn't promote their songs, and declining sales after going independent. Yet, they're still making music with a talented lineup and they love what they do!
@FAT COUNTRY Yeah, you can look it up. It's in old interviews. Ed did the majority of Hint Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, like 90% of it. There are some people credited to some of the instruments on a few of the songs in the album cover notes. I assume Ed couldn't play the drums real well because he used a drum machine on a bunch of the tracks (or because he originally intended the batch of demos to only launch a songwriting career). Ross Childress - who was CS's first lead guitarist and an extremely talented one at that - said Ed was an accomplished guitarist. So, he may have pulled off that epic guitar solo in Shine, not Ross. The early years of CS (1992-early 1994) seem to be a secret. It hasn't really been made known if the rest of the "original lineup" (Ross, Dean Roland, Will Turpin, and Shane Evans) played on the album. Atlantic Records marketed them like they were already an established band in 1994 when in reality Ed had just pulled Dean and Will out of college to go on tour. The Collective Soul who played a few local gigs in 1992 were probably different people, except Ed and maybe Shane or Ross.
Toad is one of the most underappreciated bands of their era. Incredibly tight in their live performance. Most importantly, the most down to earth people you will ever meet.
Agreed. Got to see them several times live in my teens and early twenties. Also got to meet them at one of the performances. One of my top-10 bands of all time.
I had the unique pleasure of designing the album art for their latest album "starting now" and they're currently on tour again. Glenn and the band are as awesome as you think they are and very humble and genuinely nice people. I'm proud to have worked with them and very happy to see them still creating great new music and bringing it to their fans. Not many bands from the 90's are creating new albums with all original new songs.
Dulcinea is one of the very few albums I've owned where there are no tracks that I ever want to skip. Fly From Heaven came on in a supermarket once and I was shocked - I'd never heard it on the radio.
After 20 years Dulcinia continues to be one of my favorite albums of all time. My musical tastes have taken me from metal to jazz to classical and most recently I've been on a big rap and hiphop bender the past few years, but going back to listen to Dulcinia is like seeing a long lost friend; Still the same old familiar face but yet different through the eyes of experience and maturity.
I saw Toad numerous times back i the 90’s. What always floored me was even though their songs aren’t hard driven ,their performances were so tight and so intense you couldn’t help but be pulled in to their magic.
In 2007 I was walking down 6th Street in Austin, Texas during the SXSW Festival. Bands were playing everywhere, and I was trying to decide which showcase to hit next, when I heard a familiar voice singing from a mostly empty small bar. It was Glen Phillips doing one of his solo tunes with an acoustic guitar. I'd never heard the song, but there was no mistaking his voice. I went in and was one of a handful of people who got to see his fantastic set of new stuff, with a couple Toad songs thrown into the mix. It was such a treat in the middle of a festival where I had been subjected to an endless onslaught of swaggering musicians who were full of more strut than talent. I hope to catch Toad if they come through Memphis again.
I suffered amnesia back in 2004. When I found their music it started to bring me comfort. I still listen to their music and I started remembering my past again. Thank you Toad the wet sprocket!
I sure am glad they released “All I Want”. If it hadn’t charted and played a lot on the radio, I might never have heard of them. They quickly ascended to my favorite band of all time, and that continues to this day. I don’t think they’ll ever be topped.
I never understood how bands or managers or producers could hear a song like that and not instantly think it would be a huge hit. Even if they didn't like it the surely had to see that others would
Toad is still to this day my favorite band of all time and there isn’t a song of theirs I dare skip. They have a magic in each song that possesses it’s own unique secret emotion knitting their fans together like a generational Amish quilt. I was saddened to see them disband after Coil, which I felt was their most mature and best album up until that point, but continued to follow Glen and see him live on every solo album until they reunited. Glenn is BY FAR one of the best singer/songwriters of our generation and doesn’t miss. Their new material showcases their maturity through the years and what is amazing is they haven’t lost it whatsoever and have only aged like fine wine. Unlike many bands of 30 years their music is relevant and unforced and still offering solace. Eternal love for Toad!!!
Yesss! "I will not take these things for granted " is still one of my all-time favorite songs to this day. Most people I know have never heard of it, sadly.
I will not take these things for granted is an absolute masterpiece. One of many beautiful pieces of music Toad recorded. Their live show were excellent! Great memories! 👍🏻🍻❤️😎
Toad the Wet Sprocket is in my top 5 favourite bands list. They share this list with Pink Floyd, U2, AC/DC and The Tragically Hip. To say that they are underappreciated is an understatement. They penned some of the most meaningful and profound songs I've ever heard. Their music helped to shape many of my perspectives. I'll always treasure them.
@@southernloverecords1341 I love that one!! When we were younger, my brother was obsessed with Corporal Brown. He became fascinated with military history and culture because of that one song. Powerful album. "Jam" might just be my favorite single from the band.
Pale, Fear and Dulcinea are all master pieces. Not a bad song between them. They are an amazing band. Was lucky enough to catch them in concert once and they did not disappoint. I was just listening to them on shuffle yesterday. Under appreciated for sure.
Toad will always be one of my favorite bands. My dad loved them, so i always grew up listening to them. I’ve found that as I get older and go through more experiences, a new song will really stand out and be a ‘life chapter song’. Lyrical geniuses.
A few weeks ago I pulled out all my Toad CDs to listen to. It actually rekindled my love for them and I discovered they released 2 new singles recently for a forthcoming new release. As this video noted, it always seemed uncool to like them, but over the decades I have run into many aging punks, goths, and metalheads who will be like, "Yea, I actually liked them too!" They would often cite the lyrics as the reason for liking them.
Just got tickets to see them in NYC in September! My wife and I saw them in Sacramento in the early 90s right after we were married. Toad holds a very special place in my heart.
I really got into this band, this was "The Garage" band. They took their sound with them when they gained some fame and notoriety. They also had that 90s ingredient that everyone else was trying to hard to find. Songs like "Fall Down" and "Hold her down" we're instantly added to play lists. Infectious melodies and grooves couple with lyrics and messaging that were simply too good to ignore. As I have said before the 90s was THE decade for great music and there will never be another decade that sounds like the 90s, I am so glad however to see a lot of young folks still listening and still grooving to the 90s music. To all of you Millennials, Gens Y and Z, thank you for keeping it alive and going and I wish you all could have been there with us at all the awesome concerts and live performances, I feel so bad that you missed out on some the greatest events there was at the time. R.I.P to Curt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lisa Lopez Left Eye of TLC, Chester Bennington and so many others that made the 90s the most fun decade ever.
Seen this band in Toronto in the 90's. I'm from Ireland and feel they never got the recognition that they truly deserved. They should be on the radio more, they were amazingly unique. Thanks for great music toad the wet sprocket.
Very humble and down to earth group of guys. Probably one of the last bands that just simply kept touring and trying to find ways of putting together music that would come across with a message of some sort, while creating nice melodies and good musical "hooks". Think they were one of the best bands from the 90's or, of any decade really
TTWS was a mainstay of my 90's soundtrack, and my first 4 MP3 players had as many TTWS albums on them as possible. And while I liked pretty much every song, "Pray Your Gods" from Fear is the one that always gets me. Dunno what it is about that song, but the message i get from it changes every few listenings. I might go years between hearing it, and then it pops up on a playlist and bam! It's like I'm listening to it for the first time.
Saw them in 2019 with the Mrs. and her friend. I remembered them and was surprised that I knew many more songs than i thought. It feels like they came away with the ultimate success as a band. A consistent catalog of music, and remained fairly anonymous in the public eye, what a great career!
I cannot pick a favorite song, however Something to Say on Fear is such a beautiful song. And Rings on Coil always resonated with me. The lyrics "and oh the simple pleasures" and "this ring tells of rain, this one summer. Good years, nightmares" still move me after all these years.
I saw them in Seattle in 2014. They were really good and sounded great. At the end of the show, they played "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Monty Python on the PA system as everyone was leaving.
One of my favorite bands. I saw them live twice at the House of Blues, and both times they would come out after the show and hang out with the crowd. Very approachable and down to earth people.
@setaside2 💯 agree, I noticed that each Toad album was incrementally superior to its predecessor through Coil, and if you count the expanded version of New Constellation then that release follows suit.
I had heard one or two of their songs, but had pretty much forgotten about them, until I heard Fall Down on Showtime's Billions, and was intrigued. Took a deep dive into their catalog, and fell in love! Went to see them at the Greek in LA, and they did not disappoint. I'm in the process of collecting as much of their music as I can find.
I live in Santa Barbara and have been a fan of Toad since they started out in the late 80’s. Haven’t seen them play live in a long time, but I went to almost all their shows around town during my senior year of college. I remember them as a group of really nice guys who loved playing together and really respected each other.
I saw them last night at the Rose Music Center, Dayton, OH, and was most impressed, especially there last song a raucous rendition of Fall Down, but the whole act was great. Opening act Vertical Horizon and closing act Gin blossoms were also terrific - I guess I got a 90s music fix, and in a day when major acts are commanding ridiculos several hundred dollar tickets, this was only 43 dollars and a great 4500 seat easy access venue to boot.
"New Constellation" is a fantastic album... It's like the band never really quit. They just spent time rehearsing on the astral plane while living their separate lives on this one. Toad helped me raise my children, Glen's voice providing the backdrop of so many bedtimes... Or mine as I covered their songs on the guitar. I have a lot to thank them for.
Fear was my very first CD that I ever bought lolol I remember not being able to wait until it came out. When it did , my mom gave me 20 bucks to go get it and I walked to the record store down the street from my house with the most excitement 🤣 Toad is still one of my favorite bands in life.
Thanks for this!!! Keep it coming with the '90s acts! I love Toad the Wet Sprocket! I hear "All I Want", & "Walk on the Ocean", literally everyday, multiple times a day, at my job, & i'm still not tired of those tunes, lol. Would love to see you also cover Third Eye Blind, Better Than Ezra, Semisonic, Oleander, etc, in the near future.
Saw them a few years ago in Reading Pennsylvania at a free concert with Rusted Root. I knew their radio hits but when I looked them up again to see how much more I knew I couldn't believe how much I liked the songs by them I never heard on the radio. It was a great show and hope they come back to my area again.
2021 I still listen to Something’s always Wrong…I use to get these vhs with MTV videos and I fell in love. I enjoy their music a lot but that track I will always listen to no matter how many years pass.
I was at Indiana University when these guys become popular. I heard "Walk on the Ocean" a couple of years ago and it had been a while since I had heard it. Instantly, I was brought back in my mind to Bloomington, Indiana in 1992.
Great band, great song writing, and a cool group of guys. Very down to earth, good sense of humor. Got to hang out with them a bit back in the Bread and Circus, Pale and Fear days.
I've seen Toad so many times at Bogarts in Cincinnati in the 90's that I've lost count. I've seen them at a few other venues in Ohio in the 2000's over the years. Every show was amazing. Never a disappointment.
I met Glenn in Cincinnati in the early 2000's after one of his acoustic shows and he was a great and engaging guy. So cool, no ego, just a nice 5 minute conversation about the albums Toad made which are fantastic by the way.
Thank you for this video!!! I'm only familiar with All I Want but that song has been a staple for my playlists. It was nice to see a video exploring this band and has now made me want to explore their work further! 💜
Thanks for this video. I commented about them a week or so ago and here you are making a video about toad the wet sprocket. I really love this band. Their music is so soothing and really helps me when Im stressed. I guess you could say listening to them is like my meditation.
I lived in downtown Austin in the early 90s. I was a fan of theirs back then and I remember walking down to one of their concerts downtown. I thought it was at Liberty Lunch but I could be mistaken. I still listen to their music today. Great band! Thanks.
Just want to say great job on background music. It gives a nostalgic feel but without any negative or positive tone. It allows the person to listen and draws you in to the story even if you're not particularly interested in the artist being spoken about.
Saw them at the Paradise in Boston in '91 or '92... they were doing a co-headlining tour with Innocence Mission. TTWS went on first and came back for multiple encores. They seemed like super genuine and humble guys!
I've been waiting for you to cover this band. Pale is a true hidden jem of an album! Dulcinea is probably my favorite. Their newest single "Starting Now" is really good, especially if you're a fan of "Somethings Always Wrong"
I’ve loved this band since 1990!! Saw them live at the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington Univ back when I was 21!! Glen Phillips is an AMAZING song creator and his solo shows…. It kinda feels like sitting in your living room with a bunch of friends!! I think my favorite song of his is Easier….
In 1989, I won a cassette version of Bread & Circus from my college radio station. I had never heard of them but I grew to like the album. A few years later, I got Fear, and it became one of my favorite albums of that year. Got to see them that year and they were great. I always thought they were unfairly overlooked compared to the other 90s bands.

2023. I've seen them 3 times. They're currently on tour now. Awesome band.
I saw them in Seattle in 2014. They were really good and sounded great.
At the end of the show, they played "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Monty Python on the PA system as everyone was leaving.
they do have a connection to monty python so makes sense
Iron Maiden plays that at the beginning of their songs.
One of my favorite bands. I saw them live twice at the House of Blues, and both times they would come out after the show and hang out with the crowd. Very approachable and down to earth people.
Coil is such a fantastic album!
"Amnesia" is a personal anthem.
It is a great album. And no wonder they took a decade and half hiatus. I have not listened to their comeback album. I should do that!
@@Jay-do2dl New Constellation is a superb record. Highly recommended
@@setaside2 thanks Marc! I surely will listen to it. My fav album btw is Coil
Fall Down is a great driving song.
always love to hear cool, new and old rock LIVE!
I live in Santa Barbara and have been a fan of Toad since they started out in the late 80’s. Haven’t seen them play live in a long time, but I went to almost all their shows around town during my senior year of college. I remember them as a group of really nice guys who loved playing together and really respected each other.
Saw them with Gin Blossoms on Sunday at Art Park right on the Niagara Falls gorge and it was amazing.
Thankfully they are still creating high quality music with outstanding lyrical content.
Especially the version with the bonus tracks, like Finally Fading.
Thanks for doing this one. I was really into these guys in the 90s in my 20s.
I saw them last year in Nashville! They still sound amazing!
Fear was my very first CD that I ever bought lolol I remember not being able to wait until it came out. When it did , my mom gave me 20 bucks to go get it and I walked to the record store down the street from my house with the most excitement 🤣
Toad is still one of my favorite bands in life.
"all i want" is such a beautiful song
The last few measures break my heart to this day. (In the best possible way.)
Love Toad. They are so under appreciated. They had a great sound and feel.
Amazing band.
Even their B-Sides compilation album is better than some mainstream ones during their time - and more so with today's records.
Toad is still one of my fave bands of all time!
Great band. Solid catalog of music. Got to open for them when I was playing music back in the day. Dream come true.
I will not take these things for granted - beautiful, specially the ending solo
I met Glenn in Cincinnati in the early 2000's after one of his acoustic shows and he was a great and engaging guy. So cool, no ego, just a nice 5 minute conversation about the albums Toad made which are fantastic by the way.
Was it at Top Cat's?
Thank you for this video!!! I'm only familiar with All I Want but that song has been a staple for my playlists. It was nice to see a video exploring this band and has now made me want to explore their work further! 💜
One of my favorites! Saw them in 1992 and 2019 - they sounded as great as ever!
Thanks for this video. I commented about them a week or so ago and here you are making a video about toad the wet sprocket. I really love this band. Their music is so soothing and really helps me when Im stressed. I guess you could say listening to them is like my meditation.
Very talented and great music. Love their music tones and lyrics. Just wish there were some more riffs and jams in their live shows
I was able to see Glen Phillips in concert before the pandemic and he’s still incredible. Sounds as good as ever.
I lived in downtown Austin in the early 90s. I was a fan of theirs back then and I remember walking down to one of their concerts downtown. I thought it was at Liberty Lunch but I could be mistaken. I still listen to their music today. Great band! Thanks.
One of the best bands that ever were and still are. Just amazing.
I still love their music 🤙
Just want to say great job on background music. It gives a nostalgic feel but without any negative or positive tone. It allows the person to listen and draws you in to the story even if you're not particularly interested in the artist being spoken about.
Im a big fan of toad the wet sprocket..i still love these guys..nice tune..nice melody
TTWS is one of my favorite guilty pleasure bands. Their music always puts me in a good mood.🤙🤙
Saw them at the Paradise in Boston in '91 or '92... they were doing a co-headlining tour with Innocence Mission. TTWS went on first and came back for multiple encores. They seemed like super genuine and humble guys!
Love TTWS. Still my favorite band after decades
Great video. I LOL’d at that quote of the band name creator nearly driving off the freeway when hearing the name on the radio.
Toad is my favorite band, thanks for this!
I've been waiting for you to cover this band. Pale is a true hidden jem of an album! Dulcinea is probably my favorite. Their newest single "Starting Now" is really good, especially if you're a fan of "Somethings Always Wrong"
Same.
Dulcinea is my favorite. Though I’d still put Fear over Pale. Great band.
@@mrp4242 that's fair
I’ve loved this band since 1990!! Saw them live at the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington Univ back when I was 21!! Glen Phillips is an AMAZING song creator and his solo shows…. It kinda feels like sitting in your living room with a bunch of friends!! I think my favorite song of his is Easier….
In 1989, I won a cassette version of Bread & Circus from my college radio station. I had never heard of them but I grew to like the album. A few years later, I got Fear, and it became one of my favorite albums of that year. Got to see them that year and they were great. I always thought they were unfairly overlooked compared to the other 90s bands.
good review.. I have always loved this band.. They are most excellent at making good lasting music.. Their sound and name are worthy..... yea!..
I loved the first three albums theyre still on my playlist.
I liked some of their tunes. "Somethings Always Wrong" is perhaps my fave.
