Building a 3-way Turnout for a Model Railroad

- In this episode, I build a 3-way switch using a paper template. This switch will replace 2 #6 switch and save a little bit of room on the layout. It will be placed at the bottom of the railyard and will lead into an engine service area.

I’m impressed that you’re not afraid to show your mistakes. So many others seem to be perfect.
We all make mistakes, and sometimes being afraid of screwing up keeps us from taking risks. I hope me being honest about my mistakes help people to take a chance on starting something new.

Congrats Drew on completing the 3-way turnout and hitting 2K. That one might be on my to-do list but not sure if I incorporated one in my track plan or not. Which type of track do you plan on building next? These curved turnouts have been pretty fun on my end....lol. Congrats to the winners! - Jason
Thanks, Jason. For now, I don't have plans to make anything more complicated than a simple turnout. Now, I need to move on to doing some wiring.
FYI: You are adding time to your assembly/ disassembly time IMO by spiking the pc ties. If you just glue them down with just a few drops of thick CA you will find it much easier. Don't worry about the paper template you can just trim the portion of it on the ouside of the turnout, the ballasting will cover the rest anyhow. 👍

I have a Peco version of a 3 way and just the thought of attempting to make one gives me day mares. I will be interested in seeing some rolling stock go through it.
Yeah. We’ll see how well it actually operates before we determine how good of a job I did. LOL
@@WhiteRiverLine It occurred to me that if you have some scrap pieces of flex track or maybe you can borrow some or buy a piece you could test it before laying it.

I already built a detour with Fast Track templates. I don't have those tools that you use to adjust the angles and I did everything anyway.
I really liked the nails you use but here in stores in Brazil you don't have them. Where I can buy?

Thanks, Yukon. I got my track gauges from a booth at a train show, LOL. However, you can find them at a lot of different places. The music is just some stock music I bought.

Another fun and interesting video, we have something in common. I'm modeling the Arkansas and Ozarks RR as it might have looked in the late 60s. It's going to be a shelf type layout focused on Eureka Springs. There was a three way switch just down from the depot in the early years but I'm modeling it anyway. The difference is that the one in Eureka was symmetrical. I've mentioned before that I hand lay my track as well. I'm using code 55 for the first time, it's always been code 70 in the past, my problem is I'm having a really hard time finding a stencil like the fast track stencil but symmetrical. Enjoying the videos as always!
There is lots of great scenery to model in that area, beautiful country. Good luck on finding a template. Seems like those switch point would be pretty close to each other.
