I picked up a few outboards from a scrap yard. This is the last of the bunch, and will be the power plant for my 8ft hydroplane. Lets see if I can get this thing to run!

Reliability, power, lightness, compactness, and simplicity.
I’ve always said these are the best small hp motors ever made. I have around 20 I’ve picked up cheap. That motor is pretty clean
These little plastic parts can be incredibly hard to find and kinda expensive. The possibilitys that came with 3D printers have made that kind of work so much easier
Great Video I watch Kodibas on TH-cam who does outboards for a living in Kodiak Alaska he often gets plastic bits from his old parts bin and bone..yard
Worth watching him as he has huge knowledge of JonnyRudes and outboards in general.
I sent him a question I had 4.5 two stroke evinrude twin made in Belgium and I was trying to sort water flow but could not see how to change thermostat he came back when supplied number and you can't find it cos it unusual in that does not have a thermostat has impellor and pump as normal so his knowledge is priceless I also had great Boat shop selling fishing boat and Cruisers for years since 60s he was another mine of information he would answer a question with part number get out the catalogue the original dealer version and say thought I remembered it right he has retired but is still mine of information for that shop for powerboat owners. Sadly many experts like this retiring and passing so keep up the work....
After hearing you 3D printed a part, you have my vote of confidence that you will get it started

Hi, I'm from the UK and just picked up an evenrude 15 which seems identical to the one in this video. Im interested to see exactly how that throttle linkage works if you have any video on that
You got a bargain indeed! $50, damn sure wish I found an engine like that for a great price. Kinda looked like you got that red interlock arm on the wrong side of the starter cup holder...The red interlock arm straddles that cup arm, but am guessing you figured that out when you went to start it....Not a real strong stream out of the cooling telltale, but the hose/nipple may just be plugged up... In any event, this little engine is worth much more than what you paid for it, don't "give it away" to cheap....

Hey thanks for the vid. I have a 15 hp Johnson just like this, and it'll start, but on my last trip, the recoil got stuck in the unravelled position, plus I've been having some issues with getting it to idle well. Perhaps by watching your vid, I can fix the recoil, but what do you think might be causing a potential idle/perhaps overheat condition? I'm thinking that it might be an impeller or water pump issue? Anyway, gives me hope to see you getting your motor running again!
I have one of these on my boat and haven’t used the boat in a year :( I want to try learn how to service it myself I am a total novice but willing to learn where would be the best place to start? Any tips greatly appreciated

I have this same motor and cannot get it started for the life of me. It won't even turn over. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Always best to run them in a barrel of water, instead of hooking a garden hose up to the muffs
And if you do run them on muffs....no revving above a slow idle...

What year? Generally any Johnson/Evinrude will run well on 50:1.
I supose by now you've figured out the oil ratio?
I hope you used TCW3 2 stroke mix oil (for water cooled engines)?

I am just curious, is there a reason you started it in gear. Does it start better under that small load?
I started it in gear so I could start it with more throttle. Initially it had a hard time starting but now it runs great! Check out my recent hydroplane series to see it in action

@@kevinsgarage My 15 can't start in gear with, there's a lockout.
🌴hey Kevin looks like ya got a deal you didn’t have to invest to much to get it running, I’m picking up a 1977 Johnson 15 hp tomorrow, the guy that owns it said it sat for 8 months and it ran before he put it away but 👈🏻 it would only run for a while and shut off ? As I haven’t seen what’s going on yet I don’t know if it’s a fuel ( did find a pinched gas line ) problem or carb, or electrical, it could be that there’s no water being pushed and it over heating and shutting down, or maybe a fuel delivery from the tank ? Something to find out yet ! Ya got a deal on your motor 👍🏼

@@JohnSmith-pl2bk once I got the motor back home I decided to just go through it as i want it to be dependable, new pull rope , pinion gear on pull starter , checked compression 👍🏼 110 lbs , replaced fuel lines , rebuilt carb , replaced spark plugs, coils, and power pack 👈🏻( this I think was the problem one old coil and one new replaced both ) replaced the impeller and housing, and new gear lube , replaced twist grip throttle gears and shaft and idle adjustment knob assembly, the motor runs great all’s that’s left is to sand it down and repair it and try to find a decals kit ,

A lot of work but now you know this engine very well.
You can trust it because you have done everything to make it reliable.
If you like someone who during the winter takes a nut and bolt restoration approach to old Farmall tractors..
and then uses them on his small farm..

Frankly speaking, I love Evinrude, but unfortunately this marine engine has never worked in North Africa... It always breaks down, the carburetor cup rusts quickly, and the method of operation is considered primitive... Yes, it is a very powerful engine of the 9.9 and 15 class... The problem is that it is not practical. .
Replace that impeller your water flow is pathetic
