      The video is wrong you cross a white line during the turn you are meant to wait behind the white line.
      Its also wrong to turn while another car is turning that can cash a crash you have to wait for all the cars to turn.

    I learned something really valuable at 4:28. I wasn’t expecting any car in that opposite right turn lane to be going straight ahead, but the black car did. I guess it’s important to anticipate some cars heading straight were waiting behind the cars going right, so even if there are no other cars going straight that you have to give way to, there might be some sneaky ones that appear! Hope that makes sense!

    I was in a similar situation today in Sydney as given in the video under "Time of crises" and had to move quickly when the red light fell. I was a bit anxious if I broke the law and if a camera caught me, and I lose my license. I'm new to driving in Australia. But this video really clarified my doubts.

    0:58 For this reason, the rule at an intersection is not just to give way to oncoming traffic but also to vehicles still in the intersection that may be completing their turn. The mistake drivers make while waiting for a safe oncoming gap is thinking that now that their light is red, they cannot finish the turn. When in fact, they MUST finish the turn if they are in the intersection. Back in the 80s, I was waiting to leave an intersection and was T-boned when the other driver's light turned green. As he was already on the move when it changed, he went through at speed and hit me. As a young driver, I learned the hard way about the above rule. The road rules are designed so that NO DRIVER SHOULD BE LEFT STRANDED IN AN INTERSECTION if followed correctly.

    • @gregfreeman5568
      @gregfreeman5568 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Although the rules state: "If a traffic-control signal facing a driver displays a circular
      green signal, the driver must, in accordance with these
      regulations and if it is safe to do so -
      (a) proceed straight ahead; or
      (b) turn left; or
      (c) turn right (including making a U turn if permitted)."
      The important thing here is, "if it is safe to do so", the Green light car should have slowed and allowed the other vehicle to complete their turn.

    Great video! The only thing I want to add is, watch out for pedestrians who are going to cross the road you're turning into. It happens often enough that people see a gap, think they are fast enough to turn right, but then overlook a pedestrian crossing the road and have to wait in the middle of the road.

    6:53 is the bit people often get confused about. People often think they can turn on orange, but the other side will quite often get orange at the same time - and often try to run the light. So need to wait until they have stopped.

I waited a full cycle - green, red and then green again and still no arrow. So I proceeded when there was a break in the oncoming traffic. I'm not sure if that was correct, but I was holding the line up behind me.. felt very unsure about it. Maybe the arrow was not working?

      @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Once you've entered the intersection, you can take as long as you need to exit it, the point was that once your light goes red, you've got about 3 seconds before it lets the cross traffic go, so you probably want to get out of the intersection before that. However, there are situation like when the intersection is blocked and you can't make it through, or a bunch of cars run the red light and you might need to wait longer - however these are extreme rare. Most of the time you'll be fine once you can be sure the cars across from you are going to stop at the light.

If you goes half way out of the traffic lights, it won't matter the traffic light behind you turns red as you have passed the line when it was green. • @yerolo
      @yerolo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is probably the most common scenario at these types of intersections as your view is blocked to the oncoming traffic going straight by the other cars turning right. To answer your question...you do NOT stay in the middle of the road until it goes green again as you will be then blocking all the traffic on the crossroad. As shown later in the video, it is ok to turn right on a red signal if you are already in the middle as you have around 3secs until the crossroad lights turn green. Both oncoming lanes more often than not will be stopped (as the lights turned red for them as well) in front of you allowing you safe passage to turn right. This is the same if there is another car from the oncoming direction who has 'half completed' their right turn

    Hey, I'm from a small town and I'm not familiar with traffic lights.
    If you proceed to the middle where the square is and the light turns orange, if the traffic coming from the other direction doesn't stop are you safe to just wait for the flow to stop?
    Or does the traffic from the other side get a red light for 3 seconds?

    @DrivingSchoolWA - What should be done when you are waiting in front of the white line at the intersection giving way to traffic from opposite direction till it is safe to cross, but then there is a pile-up on the other side with lots of opposite oncoming vehicles turning left and there is no space left for you to turn and fit in that lane anymore when it is safe for you turn or the light has jsut turned amber/red. If you commit and turn when the green light turned amber/red, then you will be literally blocking the intersection as well as the pedestrian crossing. also you are stranded ahead of you white solid line and can't reverse back? What should be done in similar situations?

    Hi Steve, with intersections like this especially the ones you need to move forward past the solid line to turn right, can we still proceed turning even if the light turns red? As its a busy road? I failed my driving test yesterday because I didn’t turn and stucked in the middle cos I thought can’t turn when lights changed to amber and then red. My first test and its so frustrating. I didn’t know this rule 😔

      Yeah, as I explain in this video, you have to proceed if you are in the middle

    I don't have experience in driving in complicate traffic lights, turning right n left some do have arrow that's mean I can wait for a green arrow, some do not have arrow and have solid green light will wait for a free space. Please correct me if am wrong.

    I’ve been driving since I was 19. 33 now. Never crashed. I live in England, however I’m spending a month in australia and hiring a car. I’m an experienced driver but I’m nervous about driving there. Is it exactly the same as England?

      I believe it's a lot easier here in Western Australia than in England. Roads are well planned and nothing to be nervous about. Drive safely!

    What do you do if you get caught in the intersection ?

    • @gsau3000

      Hi, if you are in an intersection and the light changes while you are waiting, wait for the oncoming traffic to stop and finish your turn as soon and safely as possible. The rule is that YOU MUST complete your turn. Consider the potential disaster if you don't. For your protection, there is also a rule that says that you must not enter a blocked intersection. This includes by cars waiting to turn and by cars completing their turn. No matter what colour your traffic light is and which direction they are going. Also, NEVER enter an intersection where there is no clear exit, ie banked up traffic waiting at a railway crossing. In this case you must wait behind the line until there is a space for you on the other side. DO NOT be intimidated by the a55hole honking his horn behind you because it's your safety you are responsible for. Cheers

    I faced the last situation during my test, it was about getting red and no cars was coming through intersection, and then I proceed. The assessor took me back to the centre and said it was not allowed to proceed into the middle of intersection and wait there while the cars are still coming from the opposite direction. Weird😢I really got confused, go in the middle or stop before the line. Jesus.

    • @nikhilguda

      I'm into the comment section just to check if anyone told this. I'm glad that the instructor told this. Processing to the middle of the intersection and hoping the traffic would clear is risky. Even though the lights change at the time time for the cars coming in the opposite directions, sometimes the cars in the opposite direction may not slow down and utilise all the time until the lights turn red. You have crossed the white line when it was green and the lights where red before you crossed the intersection, technically this shouldn't lead to a ticket as you didn't cross the red line but practically you would end up in middle of the intersection and cross it when it's red.

    what if we are waiting in the middle for a clear traffic to turn and the red turn red? Can we keep waiting there until the green light on?

    • @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042
      @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your light goes red, the one controlling that opposite traffic must turn red as well, so you just wait until you know they are going to stop then you can go. However, if the traffic blocks the intersection or they run the red light, you wait until there is space then you can go.

    Question: when at traffic lights with no arrow, I'm wanting to right and car coming opposite direction indicating he is turn left but turning into a double lane road. Is the person turning left meant to turn into the closest lane to them so the person turning right and also turn and driving in to the further most lane?
    Or must you wait until that vehicle has turned left?

    • @DriftNick
      @DriftNick ปีที่แล้ว

      You are allowed to turn into any lane unless it's marked otherwise, so you must wait until the person has turned then you can turn.

      @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's true across Australia, it's at least true in QLD. It's not true for hook turns in Melbourne although that's a different thing altogether. I know that in the UK you are allowed to follow the car in front of you into the intersection.

    • @bencodykirk
      @bencodykirk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 That's interesting that it's the rule here in QLD - I had no idea. I learned to drive in the UK where, as you say, it's fine to follow the car in front into the intersection (or "junction" as they call it over there).

    • @gregfreeman5568
      @gregfreeman5568 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 There is nothing in the regulations prohibiting more than one vehicle entering the intersection IF there is the space to enter completely. Most smaller intersections would only have the space for one vehicle but large intersections can have the space, although you would find most times the larger intersections will have arrows controlling the traffic flow anyway. I know what was said in the video but this applies Australia wide, including WA.

      If it's a red right turn arrow but a green straight light then you will have to wait behind the line for the red to drop or it to turn to the green arrow before you can proceed.
      You can't move into the intersection and wait if it's a green light but red arrow

      Once you have entered the intersection and are waiting for the opposing traffic to clear, if the light changes to red you MUST turn as soon as practicable. You cannot obstruct the intersection waiting for a green light. As soon as it turns red and the opposing traffic has stopped, quickly make your turn
