    Salam aleikum warahmetuAllah wabarakatu,
My father in law is an imam and he told me this concerning fantasy. That everything in Islam is halal unless it is clearly forbidden in the Quran or Sunnah. Writing fantasy is halal even if it has magic or time travel because it is entertainment. State clearly that this is not true in the beginning, do not mock Islam or the Prophet, encourage good values and do not write things of an erotic nature. Fantasy is everywhere; games, anime, shows, movies.
It is far better to say that something haram is halal than to say that something halal is haram. Because the first could be human error but the second only Allah can forbid. SupanAllah. So people who say that everything is haram, should certainly think twice before doing so. It makes it difficult to love Islam and takes people further from Allah. In fact Allah has said that if people did not sin, He would replace them with those who did. There is a hadith about sinners who got into Paradise because they repented for their sins and those sins were turned into good deeds, SupanAllah. So Allah loves you more if you sin and draw closer to him by sincerely repenting, rather than you not sinning at all.
Islam is there to make your life easier and better.

As-Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu. I’m sorry if this might offend you in any way…but we as Muslims should try our best to stay away from sins. It doesn’t imply to we should always sin and then turn to Allah in repentance. Yes that is good to repent to Allah but we have to t try to avoid sins because sining is a disobedience to Allah. Allah loves the sinners that sincerely repent and turn to him. But we have to try hard to avoid the sins and May Allah make it easy for all of the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad SAW. And there is some limits regarding reading the books as well. May Allah bless you and give you beautiful knowledge that Allah loves for one to have. Please check the fatwas again because there are some limits regarding it because nowadays everything has been made harder for Muslims by the outside world as they bring about pornography and such in such simple things and this is the work of shaytan. Again May Allah make it easy for me to avoid it and for us all.

i have the same question, i mean in order to have a story, you need ups and downs and villains as well, what type of villain abstains from all haram and goes to the masjid to pray five times? he's even better than my main character at that point! i really want an answer to this ...

If you are saying that it is wrong then you are in conformity with the shariah. That novel would be halal.
What is meant by "haram content" is when you write about the free mixing of a girl and a boy and don't criticise it. Or when you write about a character drinking alcohol and you don't forbid it. And other such things.
      Allah knows best!

I recommend the Lord of the Rings series over HP because it doesn't include any haram relationships (that I remember, I read it several years ago) and HP does, although it's a very small part of the series and you could maybe skip those parts.
