I commence my weaving in one hand without a sting across the top and release each whenu as I whatu until I complete four hundred then tie off lightly. Then go back and start new row. After second row I hook up under first row and start third row and away I go. Simple.
Hey'' if you find papakura marae'' or papakura art gallery? they have a korowai weaving class with older ladies that do it at the gallery or the marae? they did it before covid 19 but im not sure if they still hold it, its wea i went, .......kinda like hanging out with your nannys an auntys on the marae (feeling) i went to learn how to make korowai, but you can offer them a koha to do you one? .........hope this is helpful Xx
Sorry I took this video like 6 years ago, to help me learn the weaving process, if you want to learn korowai touch base with papakura marae and they can tell you when they have classes,
kia ora +threezys, for a korowai for your daughter you would need a bunch of feathers (of your choosing) quite a few tho, to make par, youl need some sunlight soap? or a soap that could bind the feathers together, some string for your whenu, which is like a strong thread of wool or mop string? a width of 4-5mm, (we use mop string in the video above) cottons, 4ply knitting wool or crochet cotton, say two of different colors (like in the video) a taniko thread which is like 4ply wool? and a block of wood with small nails in it at 3cm intervals between,
if you look online or on trademe for ''robin weaves korowai'' she would be able to tell more about it, and even where to buy the materials, she sells starter kits aswell, with instruction manual, they have korowai weaving classes at papakura marae and franklin art gallery, its where a group of people get together once a week and weave korowai, have morning tea, and catch up etc good group, very welcoming. hope this info helps.

well to be fair, it was a korowai weaving class, its was full of elderly ladies, (learning the craft) it was like the highlight of their week, learn about korowai and then socially get out of the house and hang out with their friends, lol i was the infant on the course, compared to the grand dames that were there.
each one was like a ''library of knowledge'' the oldest member was 94. sitting with them an talking to them about the things theyd lived through an seen was a bonus for me.
