- Great enhanced and colorized film footage about Steam Pumping Stations in The Netherlands nearly a century ago. These pumping stations were in fact the successors to water windmills. Their only purpose was / is to drain the water from the Dutch polders into canals to keep the ground, that often lies below sea level, dry. This film shows three important Steam Pumping Stations, i.e. the "Cruquius", the "Arkselsedam" and the "Linge gemaal".
The Cruquius was built in 1849 and lies in the Haarlemmermeer polder. In 1933 it was converted into a museum which still exists to this day!
The Arkelsedam lies near the town of Gorinchem and was used to pump the Zederik-boezem of the Vijherenlanden. Unfortunately it was demolished; some parts can still be seen in the Cruquius-museum.
The Linge-gemaal, designed my Mr. Dr. G. Kolff, was built during WWII and opened in 1945 by former Queen Wilhelmina. Its purpose was to pump the Beneden-Merwede near the town of Hardinxveld-Giessendam.

I grew up in Cruquius (the town) and my father was born in one of the houses behind the 'gemaal'. This is very cool footage; thank you very much!
my father grew up in Halfweg and told me stories about swimming in the water near the Cruquius, never saw this inside. He was 14 at the time of the footage. Thanks for posting.

@@kloenkiekloenkie I still live near Deventer, my family from my fathers side is from Halfweg. My grandpa had a small groceryshop in the village. And. My father had swimming as a hobby. Also in the Ringvaart. He got a medal for taken part in the resistance against the Germans in Halfweg in the wo2. He worked as a teacher for a short period at the Julianaschool there. Oh! Wat leuk om de Cruquius in werking te zien! Ik ben er als kind geweest en vind hem geweldig. Maar erg jammer dat hij het niet meer deed. Nu toch nog gezien!
De machine van het gemaal beweegt nog wel, maar nu aangedreven door hydrauliek, dus niet met kolen.

Why the windmills at Kinderdijk as apposed to this design.........lived in Den Bosch 53-54 spoke Dutch.....translated for the adults.....visited Kinderdijk with my family in 94......OSHA would go crazy with all the open huge gears.....the Dutch monitors just casually smoking cigarettes....you could feel the power .........love the country.........Capt, Mike SAT

Het linge gemaal is toch gebouwd in 1940-45? Zag die relatief kleine dieseltjes staan en dacht dat kan nooit van 1933 zijn.
Molens en stoom hebben ons land droog en groot gemaakt.
In Woerden is one of the last ones in the Netherlands

Na 37 seconden zie ik toch echt een 'brilkever', dus 'Nederland in 1933' lijkt me niet accuraat...
het Mr. Dr. G. Kolff gemaal is uit 1940/1945, dus die beelden zijn sowieso niet uit 1933
En op 0:34 meen ik een Volkswagen te herkennen. Die was er nog niet in 1933.
Dat staat al in de beschrijving. Beeld En Geluid meldt als datum "1933", vandaar dat ik dit heb overgenomen.
Flags should have some blue in it..
The DeOldify software does not know what country is involved. There are about 100 national flags with three horizontal banners. I was already amazed how close the software came to the Dutch red, white & blue flag.
Why do people thumbs down these vids ? maybe they need to get a life
probably because they think it's boring to watch, some people have the attention span of a piece of grass so that might also explain it.
