Gorillaz actually had a number one song in the UK with the song "Dare" off their second album , Demon Days. It featured Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder on vocals and 8n the animated video.
Some good Specials songs...Too Much Too Young, Rat Race, Concrete Jungle, Too Much Pressure, Gangsters, Message To You Rudy...Ghost Town contained themes related to urban decay, deindustrialisation, unemployment and violence in inner cities...it topped the charts at a time when riots were happening in Thatcher's Britain at the time...Brixton (London), Toxteth (Liverpool), Handsworth (Birmingham) and Chapeltown (Leeds) - 1981 - the lyrics are pretty sparse and it might not be obvious what it's about but people at the time knew because they were living it. R.I.P Terry Hall
Surely unfinished sympathy is their opus, well it’s my favourite of theirs so it’s only my opinion and not intended to denigrate anyone’s else’s choice of favourite, but I love the feel and tempo and the vocals so beautifully haunting , I bet it still sounds fresh now, I was never huge into Gorillaz , but I always respected the story and the lore and the collaborative fusion element, I think it laid the way for lots more diy/fusion and collaborative music across genres which I feel like we still are reaping the musical benefits from today. Another fun react JJ, I appreciate your music history reactions as I get to reminisce as well as watch videos I would never otherwise! Ps a couple of videos you name dropped working with Nas, and then just left it there!! I’m sure you’re fully aware of his work but I’d love to see you react to a video about Illmatic and share more about your time working with him, as long as is fit/ appropriate to share, I’d also love to see you react to more modern british music like fka twigs, sleep token, Dave, little simz, bring me the horizon, enter shikari and loads more I can’t think of atm !! Big love from UK, already looking forward to tomorrow’s video, whatever it is !! ❤🇬🇧
Should note: 2-D in the Gorillaz canon is not eyeless, the injuries he sustained gave him a condition that exists IRL called hyphema or 8 ball fracture, in which blood vessels in the eye are damaged causing the iris to fill with blood and make them appear completely black.
Beetlebum was the lead single from Blur’s 1997 self-titled album; the bit of electronica that was featured was ‘Battle’ from 1999’s 13. (I’ve got the coda from it tattooed on my arm; and Jamie Hewlett’s depiction of Damon tattooed on my ankle 😄) Gorillaz has toured regularly over the past couple of decades and if you ever get the chance, see them. It’s a joyous experience. It was a blast seeing you react to this, thanks!
Hey Been watching you for awhile now and I've gotta say how much I appreciate your kindness and your laughter, stay funny stay safe stay cool, sending love from across the pond and buckets of virtual hugs 🤗🤗🤗
I met and spoken to Damon in the early 1990s a few times, when he used to come into the shop I worked in Portobello Market. Not far from the All Saints. Daman was a real down to earth person and never felt he was superior to you. We used to play reggae and ska in this shop and Daman used to compliment the music. So I knew he liked the genre. At the time, I never envisaged that he would eventually create Gorillaz.
Always liked Gorillaz, but was really interesting to watch their in depth origins, and it has to be said, your great reacting skills add a lot of fun and value.
Hah! Lucky enough to see Gorillaz play live in Manchester, UK just before covid hit town.... didn't really know how the show would b stagec, but Damon was fronting the show with the guest artists appearing....massive digital screens projecting the Gorillaz characters & craziness of J. Hewletts crazy cool graphics. A fantastic night dancing like a nut in the isles. Utter genius frpm Albarn & Hewlett.❤
Paul Simonon and Mick Jones (who ironically was also in Big Audio Dynamite, one of the bands Damon took as inspiration for Gorillaz) both performed on "Plastic Beach"... and another legend - Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order) - performed on "Aries" in 2020.
There was also a Beatles animated TV show in the 60s, and later an animated version of The Banana Splits. Gorillaz were also an influence on internet band Savlonic
when Gorillaz released Clint Eastwood the Ed Case remix was the only version most people heard on tv, radio, and in bars. a lot of people bought the album expecting more like the song they knew/heard, and were disapointed that it was all rock instead with even Clint Eastwood (the song they knew) being a slow rock version and felt like they were ripped off with a bait & switch. the album was also an early attempt at a copy protected CD that wouldnt even play on a lot of CD players took mine back (blaming both the not playing allong with the real reason of the unexpected gere change). the staff just gave a full refund with no arguement saying loads of people had been returned it for the exact same reasons.
I did suggest listening to Aurora's cover of Massive Attack's 'Teardrop'. Now I think I should have suggested Massive Attack doing Massive Attack's 'Teardrop".
There's noting rich about Horsham bro lol. The specials style of music is known as Ska, it was a sound that resonated with Mods as well as Skinheads but the Specials music usually was aimed at social and political situations, listen to Ghost Town which is one of the biggest hits.
Shame on you, not knowing The Specials, a very important group in music history, they created 2 Tone (2rd wave Ska) by merging Ska and Punk, creating the huge music genre that is now called Skapunk, 2rd wave 3rd wave and now 4 wave music, each having hundreds of different groups on a global scale, they might not have had a big impact on the charts worldwide, but they created a huge subculture, and are still a inspiration for a huge amount of groups
Damon Albarn also did some movie soundtracks on the 90's, I think his best one is the film "Ravenous" with Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle, he also did a soundtrack for a weird Icelandic Film "101 Reykjavik", a funny film.!, and few other films also.!
Beetlebum into Song 2 from the Blur album has to be one of the best opening pair of tracks to any album, they even chose them for the first two tracks on their best of album too
Dan the automator never gets enough credit for The gorillaz. if you listen to any of his albums it really is the DNA of this group. Hnadsom boy modling school and Lovage really worth a listen.
all the art work and illustrations for grorillaz is done by jamie hewlett, jamie is an illustrator, he created tank girl and also had an episode of judge dredd in the 2000ad comics. his work is legendary in the underground comic scene.
Also, Deadline was my fave mag of the 90s. Had a folder at Boots that they put all the Manga Mania, Star Wars, and Star Trek Monthly issues in together with Deadline. So every month I would pop in and pick up at least 4 mags every time.. Good times 😊
Loved my Tank Girl comics on the 90s and became a big fan of Hewlett when living in England in the 90s. So yeah, Gorillaz was a no brainer when i saw rhe vids.. i knew who'd done them. Own the movie too but of course it falls short of the brilliance of the comics. Thats normally the case.. 😊
I’ve still got the Clint Eastwood single on CD somewhere and I never realised that they used a Banksy picture on the cover until my brother got into his art while doing his GCSEs and did a piece on Banksy. They’re a cool band.
There's an episode about the Specials on their youtube channel. It's decent. Seen Massive Attack live and they're class. The lead singer is rumoured to be Banksy,
10:15 That’s just his non singing voice actor they use for promotional clips of the band. His singing voice is Damon’s whose voice couldn’t be more different, with that real smooth laid back quality.
Been a fan of Blur since they started and grew up reading Jamie Hewletts comics, absolutely love Tank Girl and Deadline magazine. Hewligans Haircut is one of the best stories ever made. Gorillaz are great but Dethklok are my fave animated band.
Eyeholes! Oh this -revealed- reversed SO much! I had no idea, I feel truly Edd You Cat Edd now! Cheers JJ and TT! (PS listen to some Massive Attack, and watch a few breakdowns and analysings here on YT, Teardrops for example, deeper and better written than even it seems!)
Also, a lot of famous brits move in together even when they're on tv every week. So all the Josh Widdicombe and his gang of young comedians have lived together at some point it seems.. Jon Richardson gets teased a lot with his habits by the other comedians from the panel shows. So I think it's quite normal to do that in England. And it's not based on money i think..
In 1995 Blur played a gig in a defunct nightclub called Oscars in my hometown. Watching that show told me that at least one person on that stage was going to do something seriously weird in the best possible way.
I saw a video of yours where you saw Jonathan pie who looked like an angry journalist. He’s actually a very funny guy who reacts to current affairs. He has a channel you might enjoy his reaction to the US election
You really should check out massive attack. One of the best band's to come from these sceptic isles. I suspect you like rock and guitars, in which case you would probably like Mezzanine best.
15:30 even if you can't react to it on here, you should absolutely watch Cibo Matto's music video to 'Sugar Water' by Michel Gondry, it's a brain melter.
Massive attack 🙌🙌🙌 Which reminds me “primal scream” “Scheme” (the band) all Glaswegian and while I remember “Jamie Webster” (Liverpool)(weekend in paradise) or any song actually, my duty here is to recommend a local artist “Dylan John Thomas” (lovely day & what I need) 🏴 PS not asking for a reaction, but check them out but I’m not not asking for a reaction 😊😅❤
Dont think Horsham is seen as a rich area ? Just a normal nice looking town. Seaside dont mean wealth in england... Nobody i know is rich in Southport 😅
Given your up against bands like black grape and the prodigy you need to dig deep to survive and they did, don’t give two fcks about blur but gorillas nailed it.
House shares/communal living is (was) more common in the UK and Europe than other parts of the world... kinda chosen family shiz whether LGBTQI or not. Think Damon is bisexual (as most sensible/honest people are) and dunno re: Jamie as he's not so publically known, but they've never stated they were a couple or owt, just mates/collabs/business partners.
If you are creating fake people, they need to have a backstory. You can't just go "Here are 4 people nobody knows anything about, accept them" Somebody will want to look them up and find out info about them, so it was pretty much essencial to the creation of the characters to give them some sort of back story. GeeJam studio is actually built into the hotel. it's just a small section of the hotel grounds. Funniest part about Clint Eastwood. The main tune and drums wasnt even played by anyone. It was one of the presets on an instrument Damon owns, in fact it is the preset "Rock 1" on the Omnichord m300. its sort of an electric harp. But yeah you just press rock preset 1 and hit the go button and it instantly plays this song. There are a couple of videos about it knocking around youtube. Here you go here is a video of Damon showing off how it was done... th-cam.com/users/shortsWn0NtSNeQEQ

Russell Hobbs is my favourite name in the band. If you didn't know, they make kettles and kitchen appliances 😂 they're a brand
I suspect the flat that Damon and Jamie shared was quite an upmarket one, with more than one bedroom.
Hi JJLA! Nice of you to bring this "Birth" to my attention. I enjoyed it, and your additional notes. Keep Reacting!
Always liked Gorillaz, but was really interesting to watch their in depth origins, and it has to be said, your great reacting skills add a lot of fun and value.

As a valley's lad in the 70/80's I was blown away by the Specials
Considering that half the NHL play Song 2 after every home goal, I'm sure that's the one that earns Albarn the most cash
Coolest thing in the Gorillaz was the legend that is Paul Simenon former bassist in The Clash.
