This was composed by R K. at maturity, and the results made him very happy. He speaks of a brilliant piece of orchestral music. It was enthusiastically received from the very first moment.
I. Alborada (A Major) II. Variazioni (F Major) III. Alborada (B-flat Major) IV. Scena e canto gitano (attaca) (centered on A Minor) V. Finale: Fandango asturiano (A Major)
Excellent performance. Thanks for score. Just now, reading score, listening to music, gives you insight into what a unique and original orchestrator RK was.
Its a challenging part to be sure. The 4th movment is particularly difficult due to the manner in which RK messes about with meter in rather sneaky ways.
Fine performance by Maazel and the orchestra, except for the person playing the castinets. Either (s)he simply couldn't manage the tempo or had no sense of rhythm or couldn't count. The castinet part is important in this piece and was completely botched (frequently behind, late entrances, bad trills)! Surprised, given this was the Berlin Philharmonic.
You may be right, but try and spell CASTANETS properly. the very word, because of its shape, comes from Castagna that is the Mediterranean word for CHESTNUT. And having said that, OLE'
@@Ab-vw2sg Thank you for pointing this out. Very strange. I had an email exchange within the last year with some friends about a performance of the Schubert Erlkonig by a contemporary group. The performance involved castanets (the horse, of course), which I spelled correctly in those emails. I can't explain this lapse.

I can’t help but smile when I hear the beginning… so joyful. One of my favorites by Rimsky-Korsakov.
Every clarinetest's nightmare. It's asked for at every clarinet audition

Is there anything more joyous than this opening?
Nothing that comes to mind :)
Hard to know
I think this is comparable... Also from one of The Mighty Five, Glinka's Ruslan and Ludmila (Overture)
Some Mozart maybe? 😆
