    I hate to pick nits, but the F3 (and F4, F5, and F6), don't have electronic shutters. They have electronically timed mechanical shutters. That might be what you meant, but that's not what you said, and in a time of actual electronic shutters in still cameras, that could get confusing for people.

    The FM2 is a nice camera. One huge disadvantage is it only has 93% viewfinder coverage where the F3 has 100%.

    As a former press photographer, another advantage to mechanical cameras is their ability to operate in extreme conditions. This would include extreme temperatures and humidity that would fry an electronic camera.

    Good info, thanks for sharing.
    The F3 hotshoe is there to accommodate for the interchangeable view finders.

    The reason for the flash setup over/around the rewind crank on the F3 is due to that camera's removable finders. I think there were concerns about mechanical strain from the flash, but also a hot shoe is simply not possible with the non-pentaprism finders.

      The F3P and F3 Limited has a hot show on the finder.

    Good review, I have both cameras and I love them

    Batteries last for months or even years in the F3. And they will fit on your film bag...even in your wallet. No excuse to ever run out of batteries given their size. You also get 100% viewfinder coverage and brighter viewfinder with the F3 vs 93% with the FM2. F3 shutter rated for much longer lifespan and the camera was designed to take a abuse. I say buy both. Pros back in the day carried both loaded with different film speeds.

    Good video. I’ve had the FM2 since ‘84. I’m thinking of picking up a used F3 body.

      I’m sure you know but be careful about the LED in the viewfinder. It is hard to replace.

    I like your Video but you didn't mention the Nikon FM3a which is a fully mechanical but also has aperture priority. So in the end the FM3a has the best of both worlds.
    Also , I agree with Dave Gesell that the concept of an electronic shutter (in 2018) has more to do with how the digital "shutter" obtains the image from the sensor. It's usually talked about with the mirrorless cameras.

    • @eagle112800
      @eagle112800  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True the FM3a is nice, but pricey, I didn't think about that camera when I was making the video. I tried to explain electronically timed vs mechanically timed, but probably mixed up the terms at some point since that is how I think about them since I mostly shoot film (thus the name of the channel).

    The lowly EM also has a 1/90s mechanical speed.

  • @milosmarkovic8079
    @milosmarkovic8079 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nikkormat EL had aperture priority AE back in '72 as well as 1/90s mechanical speed when your battery dies. Having that in F3 in 1980. was not that big of a deal.

    Biggest advantage that FM2 offers over F3 is the 1/250 flash sync speed.

      If you are not into flash photography then yes, you will value bigger coverage in viewfinder. But if I have yo choose between 7% of viewfinder coverage and an ability to sync at a convinient shutter speeds then it is an easy choice for me. Yes, there are other cameras than have it both, but usually they are also much havier.

    The camera can also do time exposures with no batteries, and when the meter is active the mechanical release will fire at all speeds electronically, so it can be used as a vertical release.

    • @LaViejaConsolada
      @LaViejaConsolada 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all speeds. Only up to 1/80 of a second. So you can use the mechanical release from 8secs up to 1/80, but for unkown reasons it cannot go above that.

    do you have a result for nikon fm2 with that lens? i’m confused which one to pick between 1.4 D or 1.4 AI-S
    thx

    • @eagle112800
      @eagle112800  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would go with the D for autofocus capability, but to be honest I have never tried the AI-S lens. Other reviewers say that the 1.8 lenses are better, but I am less convinced...

    The batteries are so small and depending how long you're in the middle of nowhere you'll be fine with some spares.

      Look at the E series 50 mm f/1.8 that would be a good option for affordable 50mm lens. Check this video out - th-cam.com/video/b1eVqX_xWl4/w-d-xo.html

  • @davymike761

    I'm sorry, if you're even marginally serious about photography you're not gonna run out of batteries in the middle of nowhere. Especially when you know you're going there. That whole "running out of batteries" argument is so jaded, so milked to death in order to justify people's subjective sentiment with regards to certain cameras.

    • @eagle112800
      @eagle112800  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s happened to me before, recently actually. Switched camera badges, haven’t had to replace the F3’s battery in about 3 years, and it died. Fortunately it has a mechanical shutter too so I switched to that shutter release.
