    I just don’t really understand why we need a new merit badge like this focusing on different cultures and ethnic backgrounds when we already have things like citizenship in the world, citizenship in the nation, and citizen ship in the community. Couldn’t we have just as easily added on requirements to those merit badges if we wanted to create More information on ethnicities and religion, I just think it would be more suited having been an add-on requirement to A merit badge like citizenship in the world..

      Thank you for voicing what many are feeling about this issue. There are a lot of pros and cons to adding requirements to existing merit badges. One of the big benefits of a stand-alone merit badge is that it has more flexibility. Instead of just making another merit badge harder with more requirements. As a stand-alone merit badge, it can be modified or updated on its own, with no need to reprint existing merit badge books. This one is the first digital merit badge, as it will only have the requirements as a PDF and no printed book. At its core, the merit badge is intended to allow the scout to discover information and meet the requirements on their own. Scout leaders will need to remain positive to this change in this new merit badge environment to help our scouts meet the challenge now and in the future. YIS⚜

      @@ScouterStan if citizenship means only one thing, it is in the national sense, where we get passports from. So for it to mean more than one thing, I think the community and world are great at giving context and showing how as citizens we have other obligations than just to the nation, maybe even higher obligations. Community, nation, and world are really already 3 levels of society people are naturally part of. So how would a Citizenship in Society badge fit into this already excellent framework for understanding citizenship? It's like a 3 act play or a trilogy, it works well and all the content you describe I think would fit well into the existing badges. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like I got a better understanding of civics from these 3 badges than I did in school and I definitely drew my own conclusions.

      @@nschmalenberger One of the primary goals within Scouting is to “Be Prepared”. I don't believe that many of today's society's issues wherever addressed within the three other citizenship merit badges. I agree this merit badge should not be a place for indoctrination or expressing any political POV. Scouts work on the merit badge requirements independently and discuss their results with the counselor. The counselor should make a concerted effort to stay unbiased. When you look into the requirements a lot of it is to help the scout learn that the Scout Oath & Law cover everything within society. No matter what the issue might be in the future it seems that Scouting Values can help us all cope and deal with whatever comes our way. Thank you so much for contributing to this conversation. YIS⚜

    Clearly I'm missing something here, as are just about all the Scouters in my unit.
    We are part of a program that, for 113 years, was AHEAD OF ITS TIME in its willingness (and dedication) to look beyond race, class, income, etc as per the Uniform in the BSA Methods. So after 113 years of being "color blind" and "class blind", we now have to PRETEND that we're NOT colorblind, so that we can THEN teach how to "overcome" the imaginary challenges to being colorblind, which we already were doing in the first place?
    Rolling through the history of the BSA -
    We're open to all religions...
    We're open to physically & mentally challenged members...
    We're open to female leaders...
    We are open to homosexuals and now the uncountable various "genders"...
    We are open to girl members...
    HOW exactly is "diversity" and "inclusion" NOT ALREADY being met IN PRACTICE & APPLICATION that it warrants new "training" (indoctrination) occurring at the YOUTH level???

    • @ScouterStan
      @ScouterStan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of the youth that I have talked to who have taken this merit badge have expressed that they are grateful for the chance to research this topic before political agendas are applied later in life. Without this merit badge, we can't say that our scouts can live up to being prepared. The only objections that I've heard are from the adults on both sides of the political spectrum. You're right that scouting has been ahead of the curve in accepting all. I encourage you to read the merit badge requirements and you will most assuredly find that this is not indoctrination or training. It's awareness and that's living up to “ *be prepared* ”. Thank you for expressing your feelings on this most sensitive matter. YIS⚜

      This is the type of comment I hear from those that have not read the requirements for Cit In Soc. The only things or ideas discussed during this merit badge is what the Scout and the MB Counselor bring to the discussion. This is one of the few MBs, maybe the only one, that literately has no content. One of the reasons there is no MB pamphlet for it. It is a great self-realization and self-reflection MB that allows one to reflect on who they want to be in society. If you or your fellow Scouters truly have any concerns what so ever with this MB, their is one simple answer work with your Council to find the correct Cit In Soc MB Counselor for the youth in your Unit that choose to earn it. Seriously read the requirements. You will still may not care for it, but it will shift your thinking. Remember there is no content for this MB.

    The thing is the key about the program is to make more well-rounded young adults. A major issue being is you are thwarting the necessary amount of electives that is elective merit badges necessary for the rank of eagle scout. Not only that, but it is entirely redundant to that of the requirements in the citizenship in the community, Nation, and world merit badges. I have been out of the program since 2014 , but was an active scout master until going into Law Enforcement in 2019 and I really just don't understand the necessity for this requirement.

    • @ScouterStan
      @ScouterStan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your question. The requirement of 21 merit badges to obtain the Eagle Scout rank has been kept consistent. I feel that one of the major reasons for this merit badge is to live up to our motto “be prepared”. It would be wrong for us to send youth leaders out to face a world that has no concept of the material covered in this merit badge. At no time is the scout expected to adopt beliefs of any kind. The merit badge is very unique in that it is very fluid in its requirements. There isn't a printed booklet for this merit badge, and that is good because it would need to be expressing a point of view that would not be correct with many people. Thank you so much for your past service to Scouting. It would be wonderful to have you back as a counselor for this merit badge or as an experienced Scoutmaster. YIS⚜

    To start off your video was very informative. I have been with BSA for the last 45 years. As a scout, Parent and a leader. I have watched in the last 10 years we keep loosing young boys because of the changes. As we keep moving further away for the original ways of scouting I believe scouts will go away. If that happens, That will be a very sad day. I have done the training and research for this merit badge. Half of my troops parents have refused to allow there sons to do this badge. I informed them this will be a eagle scout requirement and their reply is our son will not be an eagle scout. At this time they have not pulled their kids out so that is a good thing.

      @c2muchtv - Scouting has to change and adapt or become extinct and irrelevant. Unfortunately, some parents think that this is somehow competing with the Scout Oath and Law principles that we've always believed in. Scout leaders need to tell their parents that this is not politically biased and reinforces scouting principles and morals. Some parents may be too caught up in the political nature of it all to even listen or make an effort to do the research. It would be a real shame if parents, buy into the political narrative and prevent their scouts from achieving. YIS⚜

      @ScouterStan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure but you may be correct. I thought the wording was odd but kind of direct. It could be interpreted that way or the other. I guess we'll all really know when the new application comes out Sometime in May. Life scouts between now and then should be able to meet all the requirements for the merit badge so it shouldn't be a big deal. I do believe it will remain a required merit badge with the other three citizenship merit badges. If they keep the requirement to 21 that means that one of the optional merit badge spaces will be taken. Thank you so much for bringing this to our discussion here on the channel. YIS⚜

    I am deeply conflicted because I know DEI comes out the Marxist intellectual tradition. I understand the place these ideas come from and can empathize with the positive aspects. I also know there is a slippery slope and that resentment rears its ugly head in many parts of this ideology. I have paid my son's dues and felt physically ill when I heard this in tonight's meeting. I am not ok with it and may not go back. Please help me see how this is necessary that we learn segments of this ideology. Why?

    • @ScouterStan
      @ScouterStan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To “Be Prepared” is the Scout Motto. All Scouts eventually need to interact with the world outside of Scouting and need to be aware of other viewpoints in society. Awareness is the best tool a Scout can have. This merit badge is not intended to indoctrinate instead it's to illuminate the issues within society. All parents should take this merit badge with their children. Merit Badge Councilors should be unbiased and hold strict adherence to the requirements as written. Merit Badge Councilors who restrict parents' involvement or don’t adhere to the requirements should be reported to the Council Advancement. I believe that this merit badge helps the Scout be prepared for dealing with other perspectives in the world. First Aid, Wilderness Survival, Life-Saving, and Emergency Preparedness are merit badges that we hope our children will never need. But having the awareness and the skills to handle situations makes us better prepared. I hope this helps, please let me know your thoughts about it. Thanks YIS⚜

    I've recently become a counselor for the Citizenship in Society badge. My first meeting with a scout to review his work happened this summer. He worked with his parents and his results showed character - the Oath and Law were in his answers. It felt like the BSA was serving him well with these requirements. There was no going through the motions and the questions challenged him. I'm looking forward to working with more scouts. On another note, a small group seems like a great setup, but that one scout needed an hour to share his thoughts. This is not a badge where I would want to cut corners.

    • @ScouterStan
      @ScouterStan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dave Youngblut - Thank you for volunteering for such a critical position. This merit badge can be challenging but keeping an impartial demeanor and strict adherence to the requirements will keep it all from going off the rails. Small groups keep to the requirements and prevent long debates. I would also encourage you to get the parents involved with your counseling. This would be a good spot to recruit more merit badge counselors. Thank you for all you do in Scouting. YIS⚜

    • @ScouterStan
      @ScouterStan  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I believe that there is confusion about this particular merit badge because it is not actually teaching but allows the scout to explore and come to their own conclusions. Being prepared requires the scouts to explore all of society's awareness without indoctrination or influence. So the answer to your question is what they are striving to understand. This makes this the most controversial and misunderstood merit badge by so many non-scouters. YIS⚜

    • @josephchapman7777
      @josephchapman7777 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ScouterStan ...... it's not teaching it's making them go learn it themselves as if it was their choice...... it's actually a very clever way to say "we aren't teaching it, it's just a requirement that they must learn it" the only reason I wouldn't pull my kids out and I would let them study this is because at no point in the requirements does it say they must agree with it and im the scoutmasterso we can just go over it and move on... that being said, I can see scouts being denied the eagle rank because someone said that the "discussion" part meant they must agree with it and argue in favor of it.

    • @ScouterStan
      @ScouterStan  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @josephchapman7777 - I think it's important that every scout be aware of societal issues before encountering insurgencies that would distort and manipulate young people. Awareness is the first step in preventing unscrupulous indoctrination. Having the scout make up their own minds about these controversial issues can only make them “Be Prepared” for what society is struggling with. The merit badge counselors for this particular merit badge are encouraged to keep the discussion small and take neither side of an issue. The scout is encouraged to come to their own conclusions. Parents are highly encouraged to help the scout with their research on this merit badge. Scouting should be commended for offering this merit badge and a much-needed awareness of issues. Many of the scouts that I have talked to who have gone through this controversial merit badge have been grateful for the opportunity to really look into the subjects that this merit badge encounters. I highly recommend that Individuals who are having difficulties with this merit badge should download the requirements and read over them. You will quickly discover that the subjects are neither endorsed nor deposed and the scout is expected to come up with their own opinion. YIS⚜

      Scouts who wish to earn every Merit Badge before turning 18, use the date of achieving Life rank as the qualifier. New and discontinued Merit Badges after that date become optional. The merit badge counselor PDF, national press release, and all of the documentation that I've read clearly states that this is meant to be done in a small group. It even goes further and specifies that the merit badge should not be taught in large groups such as summer camp or merit badge academies. I put links in the description to this documentation from national if you would like to bring it up with advancement chairs locally. This is a very different kind of merit badge. YIS⚜

      @@ScouterStan IMHO, it will all come down to the definition of a “small group”. Then, the old you say “to may toe”, I say “to mat to” will come into play. Should not does not mean will not, and thus just another Eagle required badge a scout can knock out in camp or at a merit badge academy. You can lead a professional to the National rule, but they’ll interpret it the way that suits them. Seen it many times, in many different councils over my 50 years in Scouting. A sad, but true fact.

In fact, you’re not required to agree with anything and still complete the requirements as written in the merit badge. Your Merit Badge Counselor is not allowed to change the requirements in any way. Information in this merit badge will help scouts be better prepared for social issues now and in the future. Knowledge is the key to enlightenment, and that goes both ways. YIS⚜

    First off, thank you for your informative videos, I just recently found your channel and I have been watching them several a day.
    I have no problem with this being an Eagle required MB, but I believe that it should be required for First Class rank the way First Aid MB use to be. If we (BSA leadership) strive to get all scouts to the First Class rank and if they choose to go for Eagle or not they will then at least have the training under their belt whether they become an Eagle Scout or not. Also most Eagle Scouts generally understand about these diversities and properly handle and deal with them. If we are making First Class Scouts so that they will be better and productive citizens, I feel that this MB should be part of this process.
    Thank you,

      Thanks John, that's a really good suggestion. The primary goal is First Class for Scout skills and this should be one of those. It’s far easier to introduce a merit badge than to reconstruct the rank requirements. Merit badges are inherently optional unless required for advancement. From the information, that I reviewed for the video the feeling was not to disrupt the existing rank system as little as possible. Also, the maturity levels of the subject matter were a consideration. I think in the future there will be some requirements put into the Cub Scouting program over time. Thank you so much for your comment and suggestions. Check out the Heinz 57 playlist. I'm planning on putting out 3 new “57” videos this winter. Thanks, YIS⚜ (🦅 1981)

    My four sons will not be doing this merit badge. They will earn everything all the way up through the end of their eagle project, then they will be done with scouts without actually being able to earn their Eagle. Research where this badge originally came and what it was actually responding to.

      That’s unfortunate. But before making an irreversible decision, I would recommend finding a Merit Badge Counselor (MBC) that follows the requirements *_to the letter._* Also, meet with the MBC with your sons. If the MBC starts diverting from the requirements you can get them back on track. Otherwise, stop the session and find another MBC that follows the requirements. Ultimately it’s your children and your decision, and I respect and support that. YIS⚜

      @@ScouterStan The current "meat" of the merit badge doesn't present much of a problem. As released, it is void of much purpose or meaning. They watered it down due to incredible negative responses to the original content. The "heart" of this merit badge, where it came from and what the purpose was, is what I have a problem with. The BSA keeps sliding downwards. I'm just drawing a line in the sand now. Remember, the frog slowly gets boiled alive....

      I think this Merit Badge helps Scouts “be prepared” for the society their going into. Giving our kids the tools to make good decisions is all we can hope for. We know politics can really mess people up if they're not prepared for it. Remember, the frog doesn't know it's in a pot of water on the stove… YIS⚜
