"I'd never written a sitcom so I thought that was something I ought to have a crack at".
Goes on to write, inarguably, one of the best sitcoms ever made.
"Just give us a teabag and I'll suck it on me way 'ome".

Never written a sit com. Hit the jackpot on the first attempt! It’s a classic. RIP The Pride of Prestwich. Victoria, Queen of Comedy. Left the stage too soon but left us a legacy to laugh at!

In my opinion the undisputed queen of observational comedy! Dinner ladies was one of the greatest shows she ever did! One i regularly whatch over and over again and it always cracks me up! Some of the funniest comedy lines i have ever seen.i remeber the infamous sscene where dolly thinks shes had viagra in her tea! The way that scene builds to its climax is sheer comedy genious! What a great writter victoria wood truely was.will we ever see a comedy geniuos like her again? RIP the true queen of comedy.

Such an under-rated series, wonderful script, and a wonderful cast. Rest in peace Victoria, you were one of a kind and you leave a large Vic shaped hole in English comedy.

I watch this series every December, leading up to the millennium. It is part of my Christmas routine. It always feels like I'm 'going home'. Love it and I always look forward to each and every episode. I have to force myself not to watch two episodes on the same evening as I like to make the lovely warm feeling it gives me last over a couple of weeks. RIP the lovely Victoria.

Some interesting comments about dinner ladies in the authorised biography of Victoria Wood, "Let's do it". The cast members talked about how incredibly difficult and nerve wracking it was because of Victoria Wood's obsessive perfectionism which could make her prickly - the rewrites are mentioned here in this video. Celia Imre also mentioned how she felt somewhat bullied by Victoria at times. Victoria's perfectionism also led her to talk dinner ladies down afterwards. She said that The Royle Family's new format had made studio based sitcoms like dinner ladies obsolete. Dawn French also being somewhat polite here. She mentioned how Victoria was very difficult to work with in that sketch. She also mentioned another time when Victoria came to stay with her in Cornwall and was a bit of a nightmare. She complained a lot and apparently sulked when Dawn took her for a walk on a beach, saying she didn't like beaches. Dawn pretty much lost her rag with her. All in all, the portrayal of Victoria Wood is a massive talent but someone who had very deep scars from the way her mother neglected her (maternal neglect being a theme that runs through a lot of Victoria's work). It made her shine, but also meant that at times she could also be very surly, controlling, jealous, obsessive, bullying and somewhat narcissistic.

When it was first broadcast in 1998 I was very disappointed in it. Victoria Wood was so clever with her tongue twisty type songs, 'Let's do it' for example, I was expecting something equally fast moving in her situation comedy, maybe I thought it would be equally as fast paced, a bit like 'Fawlty Towers'. How wrong was I? It was more of the pace of 'Last of the Summer Wine'. It was more of a clever word play type of thing which I did not truly appreciate and soon stopped watching it. Now as I approach 70, I am watching 'Dinner Ladies' on UK Gold and I think it is fantastic. Goes to show how your taste changes with the years.

I felt similarly about the first episode perhaps, as they were still establishing characters, but I persevered and ended up loving it and have watched it many many times in the last 20 years, learning to appreciate it more with each viewing. Some comedies mature wonderfully... and some comedies require the audience to mature wonderfully to truly appreciate their genius.
