After having slagged off walter mitty dreamer types who want to join the SAS there's nothing wrong with it provided you are quite intelligent and super fit and have good endurance and are quite young.
If you fail the selection like 90 odd percent do theres no shame in that.
AT least you had the balls to go for it if you don't drop out really early on.

I dunno, I'm an armchair type you will have to ask the people themselves.
I do know the SAS is a small force but deadfy
If you have the vision to see beyond the obvious they are a great thing to have in world politics.
Theres always that unspoken threat that the best troops in the world maybe used against you.
Its handy for tinpot dictators and other idiots.
The SAS themselves would probably hate the idea of that, being any part of politics, but thats how the world is.

If we’re being honest every tier 1 unit from a first world country is gonna be equally comparable and the deciding factor would fall back to their support and any advantage one or the other may have!! As far as tactics and training SEALs and SAS are equally trained and funded and the selection process for both is equally as rigorous!!! The SEALs and SAS/SBS are literally friends and train together and operate together regularly!!!

Pretty amazing, i love all this kind of stuff but towards the end when they're talking about leaving the SAS/Army or whatever and starting at the botom of the pile i can't help but think it's stupid that these people aren't set up for life when they leave the SAS and even the forces in general. A footballer gets paid millions for kicking a ball around while these true heroes go through immense training and go through unbelievable stuff only to leave it all and have to take a shitty job to make ends meet. Sure, some of them write books, make games and get on TV shows but it's a far cry from what they deserve. I'd like to think if i were royalty, stupidly rich or whatever and i got taken hostage for example, i would make sure the people involved in my rescue lived comfortably for the rest of their lives.

The training doesn't end when one is selected. Soldiers of the SAS, and any special forces Unit, train constantly. They are always pushing the boundaries, extending their capabilities. These guys often develop mental illness because of the nature of the training. They deserve more help when they leave the service

  • @KismetWolf

Go read "Inside Delta Force" by Eric Haney. Delta Force was modeled almost exclusively after the SAS. Even their selection phases mimic the SAS's, all the way down to the relaxed manner of the instructors during the selection phase.
Richard Marcinko (creator of SEAL Team 6) even had his SEALs train with the SAS regularly.
Bottom line: Without the SAS we wouldn't have a lot of the special forces units we have today.

When Eddie Stone says being SAS, does not give you a god given right to a descent job; I disagree. When you are highly trained or skilled or qualified, I think you do have a god given right to have a descent job and career and be given the respect you deserve. If society is going to insist that highly skilled, trained and qualified people exist, then society should respect you after you leave these roles, as well as during them. Otherwise, what is the point of all the specialised training and skill development.

Yes I agree that SAS and other Forces often have it rough after returning to Civvy Street. It's a poor use of highly trained and motivated people, to have them back at the bottom; perhaps unemployed.
IF I were an employer, I would be proud to have the sorts of skills they have. And I don't even mean in Security work.
They would be self reliant and able to work alone. They would be able to think quickly and react to changing situations using their own judgment.
Many would have First Aid skills already. And having spent several years in the Service, Their loyalty, commitment, and motivation and leadership would also be good for any firm and colleagues in team setting.
Again, I would be proud to have them in my Firm or Project. Sad to hear about Mac. All the best to them all. Jack.

And here is the kicker, if you get a mag designed for pistols it can be 10 rounds. So ar15s have this thing called the lar pistol magazine, but because it says pistol magazine on it you can double the round count legally. Same with the vz58, there is a pistol mag for the 7.62x39. It's so funny it hurts. And biggest kicker, no limit on belt feds. So you can modify the ar15 to take belts, and run unlimited rounds. Makes so much sense right?

He’s been dead a good while now. We tried to get his records but they are sealed. We couldn’t afford his funeral so we had help with that too. I wish I knew more and I wish I had pictures.

Also unfortunately the US special forces don't specialize in intelligence gathering. Since they tend to be doing strike missions more then anything else. It would be fairly simple to train the special forces by the CIA/NSA in order to increase the abilities of the Special Forces to be something more then just a surgical strike team. I still LOVE my boys in the military and I can't emphasize enough how much training and effort they put into completing the training. It just shows the different styles of training and what the military WANTS for special forces and what roles they have to play in the whole scope of things.

I read the average height and weight of a Navy SEAL. They are not much larger than average, of course in great shape. I think this is interesting because you'd think that HUGE men might have an advantage. However, there is a trade-off with size. Your strength to weight ratio decreases ordinarily and often agility as well. So, you have to be strong enough, but if you get too large then you will be less effective in scaling things, walking long distances, etc.

The same support should be available to former members of the Special Boat Service (SBS).
