Um so there a few things I totally missed from the book, like Holly being pregnant! But then she miscarries soon after she is arrested. Also, I say Fred had the cat but that wasn't the case. He sees the cat later on, but someone else has adopted it.
I saw the movie first, coincidentally after I moved out of my parents house and, I connected so much with Holly's commitment issues. Hearing the phrase "“I don't want to own anything until I can find a place where me and things go together” while I was actively refusing to buy any furniture for my own apartment because "I wasn't sure I will stay there for long", made me feel so seen. At the end, the movie gave me the hope that one day I could find love and my place in the world... just like Holly, right?... right??? Well, years after that, I bought the book at an aiport before a long flight.. and the shock and sadness I felt when I found out Holly actually goes away and her fate is unknown is still something that haunts me 'till this day 🥲 because, being the pessimist that I am, I thought at that moment she never settled down therefore, I will never settle down. Took me a couple of days to process but... oh boy, I wish I had read the book before I watched the movie 🤣🤣
That's very understandable why it made such an impact on you! Your view makes me appreciate the movie ending not for the romance angle necessarily, but just the fact that she is able to find "home". Thanks for sharing!
I absolutely love the movie adaptation i never read the book my only problem with the film is Mickey Rooney even though truman Capote wanted marilyn monroe in the role of holly audrey did a brilliant job she and George had good chemistry

I saw the movie many years ago and I have to admit that I did not pick up on the fact that Holly was a call girl, that completely went over my head. The movie also didn't resonate with me. I assumed that it was because it was an older film, but now I don't think it's the case. I have since seen a lot of older films that moved me. The conversation that you mentioned between Holly and Fred about belonging makes me think of the conversation from the Little Prince between the little prince and the fox about taming.
Yeah, after this video I was reading and I guess Capote actually viewed Holly as someone who was paid to be seen with men, but that doesn't mean sex was part of the deal...I had assumed that was the case, but I may have been wrong about that. But when men give her money for the "powder room" that is their way of paying for her company. But yeah, plenty of other old movies that I also really love, so I'm with you on this one. I haven't read the Little Prince! I should check it out.
I'm convinced that Marylin Monroe could have easily handled the role of Holly. The issue would have been wether the audience could look past her superstar role in The 7 Year Itch with Tom Ewing, which was an upstairs / downstairs apartment comedy just packed with sexy cues, which were turned into comic bits.
The ironic thing is that the film is so different from the book because of Truman Capote. These changes were all approved and I believe asked for by Capote and he was so proud of how this film turned out.
Yeah knowing the author gives their seal of approval is good to know! In some cases I think the author has things they wished they had done differently and maybe they see the movie has opportunity to make those corrections.

His whole persona was centered around the belief that what mattered most wasn't how much people loved his past work, but rather how much more people would love his future work. It's intriguing when a writer of a book-to-movie adaptation opts to diverge so drastically from the original text, almost treating it as mere inspiration rather than a faithful adaptation. Capote may have been a cruel sellout, but undeniably fascinating nonetheless. Maybe sellout is the wrong word. Narcissistic perhaps. A troubled man for sure. Deeply troubled.
The movie has so much staying power because of the question being worked out: "Can two lost, damaged people with bad pasts and identity struggles look past thier defenses and find a simple childlike love for each other in the middle of heartless,anonymous, New York City?" At Tiffany's, you feel like nothing bad can happen to you. Says it all, doesn't it?
Love this review, I’ve always been interested in this case of book vs film adaption since I loved the movie then I read the book and was shocked how different it was but also I liked the book way better be kind rewind has a great video about this. I felt the book had more depth, and self awareness than the movie I loved the character study of holly she’s outright not a good person but she’s interesting and her backstory to what happened to her in her childhood and how this Holly character is really a new identity to recover from her true self, I also like that the narrator is not a love interest, the only reason why I still love the movie is solely for Audrey hepburn’s performance although I would admit she was a little miscast and I do think Marilyn Monroe would’ve done much more with the character given that holly mirrors a lot of her true life

I think that maybe the reason this story doesn't connect with you is because it is told by a man from a man's perspective. It's progressive in many ways for sure, but there are nuances that a male writer/director will miss.
Tbh I hate the ending in the movie-the narrator needs to be left without answers!! Holly being a mystery was such a crucial pillar of the book in my opinion
Book wins. Audrey Hepburn's star power can't overcome the watered down screenplay and MOST RACIST performance ever filmed by Mickey Rooney. On a personal note. In 1992 in a grocery store George Peppard was shopping and not being shy I went up to him and shook his hand. He was ornery and unfriendly. Still...wished I kissed him on the lips so I could say I kissed the same lips that kissed Audrey Hepburn. Missed opportunity. 🥸
