Why was this such a big thing, then disappeared? Even Ducati was in on it, but the whole class went nowhere. I'd love to see this class revived. SOOOO much fun to be had.
I think you answered it yourself. Ducati was the only factory who directly was involved. The rest stayed away. Yamaha made the SZR 660 as a sport-single and MZ used the same engine for their kontribution to the big single market, and that was it. The rest of the major brands stayed away. Even if the others had a big 600/650 single engine used in offroad, no one thought about using it in a sport frame, so it was up to those who wanted to race a big single to build a racer themselves.
Hi Marty ... supermono is/was my favorite racing class. The least restrictions and the most space for technical innovation. There were beautiful motorcycles in the 90s in the German championship. Until 5-6 years ago, I used to see that class at racetracks ... I think it was the European Championship ... the participants were mainly from the Netherlands and Germany. I fondly remember some guys from the Netherlands ... Yamaha 660 engine in a Japanese OVER frame ... pure fantasy!

A chum of mine had one back in the day, I think it used a Spondon frame which was a very snug fit, so much so that if he needed to change a plug the engine needed to be dropped...
There were some really interesting bikes in that class...
