I realized how sensational CM was when I was about 18-19 in San Francisco in the early 80’s. 3 of my teen fashion friends had one of CM’s leather jackets and I felt they were the most fashionable in SF and were still kids and not working and poor. Only 2 stores carried it, Macys and Wilkes Bashford and I would dream to own a leather jacket and looked at each time I went to both stores. I bought my first Montana Jacket in 1983 at this store in SF called Walter Fong. It was under Mario Valentino label but it was almost the same jacket CM made for his line in leather and had all Montana’s design details. Like the neon orange trim that he did a year before with sweatshirts. I never hear anyone mention his collection he did in 83 for Mario Valentino, but Armani for that year did the leather items for Mario Valentino and Versace also did collabs with other designers. So back then if you wore designer clothes, you stood out bc it was so different from the other clothes that were made for the masses. So CM will always be special for me bc I felt like I was one of the few poor kids that was able to experience having what the rich and famous privilege had and could afford.
He closed his fashion house and stopped designing, but still alive. With all the old fashion houses revamped, they should revamp the legend Claud Montana label and design.
