Fine documentary - not only was this man, in my humble opinion, the greatest Irish Poet - he is also one of the great poets -the voice of his age and are age - a fascinating man
I went to the Yeats exhibit at the Irish National Library and saw the effort he put into his esoterica. I was embarassed by the nonsense on display, but recalled what Yeats himself said about it; that without it he would have been unable to write his poetry. It gave The Second Coming its magic.
I first heard "The Stolen Child" via The Waterboys, and beautiful it was. I never realised until years later it was from Yeats. And just now that Irish ladies rendition... stunning.
Yes it is difficult , if not impossible , to rank poets in order of greatness . Some say it shouldn't be attempted. ? But reading Yeats at his finest - and he could be rather silly and self indulgent at times - strikes deep hidden chords within . You just know he was not simply " another poet " . He speaks from a pure source on the boundary where Spirit and matter intertwine . We feel it . Eliot too was great ; but in a different more cerebral way.
A haunting documentary on a beautiful poet. Especially the rendition of The Stolen Child. ... by Edna o Brien. ..... The unrequited love of Yates to a beautiful woman who conceived an enchanted daughter to another man ...on the grave of her dead son ..is the stuff of folklore . Bob Geldof shows his love of Yates and his love of London.
Yeats wrote some all time great poetry, say what you will of whatever weirdness he was involved with. I read his poetry and think maybe I just need to act weirder to lead a more inspired life.
What’s interesting is how uninteresting celebrities are… just play music musician… play your tunes… I’m not interested one wit in your opinion on world affairs… not one…
A travesty. Geldof is truly awful, Bono like, with a deeply vulgar idea of poetry as he has of song. Everything is for sale in Geldof's world of Breakfast Television and Band Aid.
I have searched for this Documentary for ages. One of the finest 2 parters ever. Cheers
The best readings of yeats’ poems

Geldof a very confused West Brit with little knowledge or understanding of Irish history.

Embarrassing.
Why so?
