    Being a farmers market strawberry maniac (chain store “strawberries” are not the same fruit, some kind of tasteless imitator 😁) I am in AWE of this beautiful garden filled with repurposed barrels. Absolutely amazing and I love that you have hundreds and hundreds of plants. I am going to be likely trying to replicate this idea next year. I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m also going to do about 12 cut-in-half barrels for 24 lettuce and carrot beds for salads along with a few 55’s used for tomato plants. I’d bet they will get huge in a 55. Thank you for this video it has me absolutely determined to get my garden going for next year!

    Good idea with the clay pots in the center of the barrel! I had seen a pipe down the middle with holes in the sides where you could have worms and compost, but I hadn't seen your idea before. Nice if you want to go somewhere and not be too concerned about watering while gone!

      Exactly! Vertical gardens dry out quickly and the worm tube barrels do not have a solution for this. Thanks for the comment!

    on our best year ever with quinault berries, we looked them over and rearranged plans to get them the next morning but our furry rabbit friends beat us to them! they must have overheard the conversation and so ate them all! the plots are fenced in now but too much over winter mulch last year took a toll. in barrels, birds nest in them and eat them; on the ground; rabbits, birds and even squirrels get them (ignoring dozens of marigolds that are supposed to repel them. one year the rabbits ate all the marigold flowers)
    this is a new year, 2019, and the battle will go on. nice thoughtful arrangement you have - happy harvesting...

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be a challenge. One method I have seen people try is to paint red berries on the containers so when the berries are finally ripe, the birds think they are just paint. Not sure about them wanting to nest though! Goodluck and thanks for watching.

    Exellent video, will be looking for your build on this as I want to build a double barrel strawberry planter with a wormery pipe down the middle, with the intention of the worms feeding off the food scraps and leaving castings near the strawberries to feed them, with a collection system at the bottom to collect and reuse the juices at the top.
    🌱Happy Gardening my friend, Terry.

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is the method most people go with. I choose to not include the worm tube or collection system for the juices because I use clay pot irrigation instead. With the worm tube you need a way to empty the tube eventually which means having your barrel up on some kind of stand (which then makes it hard to move). Also you need the barrel on a stand for the flow through compost tea collection...however the only reason you need a drawer to collect all those juices is because people are watering too quickly and the nutrients are flooding through the soil....and yes sometimes it is recollected but usually the drawer is full before you reintroduce it to the garden and some is still lost. My solution is to use the clay pot olla and a core of organic matter. There is still lots of native worms and bugs to break down the organic matter but watering is done extremely slow and doesn't cause the flow through nutrient loss...and it also prevents such constant watering.

    This is really great. I lined a laundry basket with burlap and cut slits in the sides to plant bare root strawberries, and lettuce seeds on top. The bare roots didn't take, and after 2 failed attempts, I gave up and bought 4 starts on clearance from Walmart and planted them on top after the lettuce bolted. They looked pretty dead but I had faith. Two years later, the laundry basket berry patch is getting pretty crowded (needless to say, all 4 plants made it back from the dead 😄), and this barrel is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing your design. I'm very excited to try the olla, as we get some scorching summer sun here in Oklahoma and it's tricky to keep container plants alive without automated irrigation. I can't believe I haven't seen that method before. Just fantastic.
    Good luck with all your ventures!

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much for the positive review! I really like the olla design but it can run low on water as well if it is very hot. One option might be to add another pot on top to increase the water capacity. Hope that helps, happy gardening!

    Hi Tim, love your setup. can you elaborate a bit about your watering system with the 2 pots? does the water go through the wall of the pots? do you have drainage holes at the bottom of your barrels?

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Inon! Yes the water flows directly through the wall of the clay pot. There are drainage holes in the barrel to drain the bottom level of plants otherwise it will drain out the bottom pocket level and drown the bottom level of plants. The idea of the "olla" (clay pot irrigation method) is that it only releases water as the soil needs it so it helps keep the soil from drying out. I still water the soil, then fill the olla but it stops the water from rushing through the soil and taking nutrients with it. I have another video about ollas you can search if you are interested.

      Thanks Tim for the quick reply. Do they produce fruit from bare roots in first year ? Do you protect them in winter ?

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love when I get comments on my videos :) All of the plants in the video are bare root transplants that are about 2 weeks old. They all produce the first year but it mostly depends on the size of their roots. The smaller bare root plants may not. I had thought about putting a fabric over them for winter but never got around to it. I have grown them in containers 5 times large without winter protection and they all seem to live so at the moment I just have my fingers crossed they all survived. I think that they will....normally the leaves die off but the roots survive.

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clay vessel is extremely important in my opinion. I am the only one who puts them into a vertical garden but I wouldn't make a barrel without one....also I plan to put a foam ring on top of the clay pot and add a second clay container to double the water capacity which should give it about a week between watering in peak summer. Also you can add a rotation ring to have it spin around. I get mine from home depot in the cabinet department and place the spinner between 2 flat concrete stepping stones.

      My barrels have 40 planting pockets plus the top which make up about 22 square feet of garden surface space. It depends a lot on the plants you choose. 40 Radishes will not go too far but 40 kale would provide more greens then you can eat. They are all approximately the same size but they need to be white wine or fizzy drink bottles for the thick glass and sloped neck on the bottle.... 5 rows, 8 pockets per row, spaced evenly, I think 3.5 inches per pocket or so (diameter of the bottles) and maybe 6 inches between each one?. The barrel is 3 feet tall so it is 6 inches per level in height with 5 rows. I used a template fabric so I could just draw the marks on. Drill holes in the very bottom so water doesn't flood the bottom layer...and I would use a double olla (4 pots total) to max out water storage. Happy gardening!

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Ammar. Often vertical gardening is done at scale inside commercial greenhouses. Although they most often will do hydroponics, aeroponics or aquaponics (different methods of growing without soil) to maximize yield.

      I do have seen many hydroponic greenhouses, however i see low initial investment in this. Yet i dont see any farm using barrels.
      Questions that come to mind
      1.Does it really save space
      2.Is it commercially viable
      3. Can root vegetables like ginger be grown in this method?

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmmarSaya It only saves space for small plants like strawberries. If you have large plants on top they will shade the lower plants and stunt their growth. I would stay it is not commercially viable. The reason I made so many in the back yard was in an attempt to sell them fully planted. For awhile I was delivering them full of soil and full of plants. If you have very limited space inside a greenhouse it might make sense but otherwise I would probably just plant in the earth. Root veggies could be grown on top but growing them on the sides of the barrels would be difficult to harvest, and the light would be likely blocked from the plants above.

    • @Timodeus
      @Timodeus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I decided to replace the worm tube with the clay pots because without putting the garden on legs, it becomes difficult to access the worm tube castings once the tube is full. Also I find barrel gardens dry out fast so the clay pot irrigation helps with this. You can always do vermicomposting and add the compost tea and castings the the barrel garden later. I have an idea for ya. Take a ping pong ball and a 1/4" dowel. Glue the dowel to the ping pong ball and put it in the hole of the terracotta pot and that will tell you how much water there is in the pots. To hold it in the center of the pot you can cut a piece of plastic with 3/8" hole then you can gauge how much water is in the pots. Mark the dowel with 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and then and add line for water. That way all you have to do is just glance at each one to tell how much water is in the pot and when to fill the pot. Let me know what you think about this idea. I too would like to know how you built the barrel slots. I have some idea how you did, but not sure.
