I haven’t been to Thessaloniki, but I think from Thessaloniki you’re very close to other countries (Macedonia, Bulgaria, etc.) which makes it easy to do foreign day trips. I’ve been to Athens and the day trips tend to be Kea and the small islands on the southern coast of Athens. Tip: When you arrive to Athens Airport NEVER eat at Everest Exclusive, they’ll ruin your trip and make you very unwell and tired.
Thessaloniki not as touristy? I believe you missed a lot when you stayed there. There are numerous museums to visit and I suggest the archaeological one that has Ancient Macedonian artifacts from the tomb of Phillipos II, the father of Alexander the Great, the Byzantine museum, the Roman Agora, the old Upper City, the Hebrew Synagogue, Kemal Atatürk's house, the old villas in Vassilissis Olgas, the Laographic museum, the Gallerius Arch aka Kamara, the Pantheon aka Rotonda and even more contemporary ones like the OTE tower for a quick coffee and a nice aerial view or the NOESIS technological museum (there was an amazing exhibition a few years ago with ancient technology and inventions e.g. Heron's)... Not to mention old churches if you are into that. Just a few that come to mind. Thessaloniki is a city with Ancient Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine monuments. You only experienced the touristy trap portion of it.
Thanks for your comment! This is really useful to know, I definitely visited the Roman Agora, the Arch of Galerius and the Rotonda - they feature in one of my previous videos I think! My first video on Thessaloniki contains these attractions I think, so hopefully you can check that out if you have time! But when I say “touristy”, I used that word to mean “volume of tourists”. The volume of tourists is certainly bigger in Athens than Thessaloniki. That’s why Thessaloniki “is not as touristy as Athens”, because more tourists visit Athens, so this makes it “more touristy”. Thanks!
there is no comparison between athens and thessaloniki when it comes to touristic places.. c'mon athens has greater history and monuments. who cares about roman churches? athens has greek history, thessaloniki roman. sorry that's the truth. Roman is not Greek.. even the white tower is ottoman. Although i prefer thessaloniki overall as a city there is no comparison for a tourist who cares about "Greek" history.
@@racephaseThe Byzantine period was also considered as greek, which holded about 1000 years. The Byzantine Empire was a successor state of the Roman Empire, with its capital in Constantinople. Although it considered itself the Roman Empire and was referred to as such by its citizens, its culture and language were predominantly Greek. Therefore, it is often referred to as Byzantine or Greek-Byzantine. It's a mix of both, depending on which aspect is emphasized. You find much of it in Thessaloniki and you can't just disregard these 1000 years of greek history.
@Stardust3108 I don't but it's the worst part of the "Greek" history anyway. No one cares about byzantine history when talking about Greece. It's dark ages get over it
Athens has lost its character, the good old days are forever gone. On the other hand Thessaloniki still keeps the traditional Greek attitude. Thessaloniki wins for sure.
@@TravellingWithCon My favourite places are Kastoria, Rhodes, Volos, Ioannina Herakleion e.t.c Although between the two main urban areas of Greece, (just to refer that i am Greek) i prefer Thessaloniki than Athens by far, and from Thessaloniki metropolitan area i prefer the east part than the west one too. Thessaloniki keeps the traditional Greek character meanwhile Athens became an impersonal and stressfull chaotic city.
depends where youre are in athens, athens is not athens there are many sub-citys of athens (attika) like exarchia or other places where you feel like a non tourist thr centre of athens is ofc croweded and full of tourists@@TravellingWithCon
Easy Athens vs Thessaloniki I've lived in BOTH People behaviour Athens: interrogation Thessaloniki: not exept if you start talking AKA nobody asks Price's:100€ equivalent (cost of the same things by housing to night life Athens:€100 Equals Thessaloniki €70 Thessaloniki it's 30% cheaper Psychology Athens: always nervous in the point of braking down every 30" Thessaloniki: even if your house burned to the ground people always looking on the bright side. AKA NY Vs LA 😂 City vipes as a hall Thessaloniki it's a RELAXED Athens. International connections Athens: transatlantic Thessaloniki: European Crime and pollution: Athens it's far more dangerous and serious crimes like killing someone it's more on a daily base news. It's rear in Thessaloniki to hear someone being killed. As for petty crime's Athens it's worst but you can also be a victim. Working and moving to and out of work (my bad record) Athens: 10-12 hours daily NO Jock Thessaloniki: 9-10 hours NO Jock either. Basically Thessaloniki it's more human scale metro area to live and work Both city's demands both couple to work since it's quite pricey for greek standards buy in overall Thessaloniki it's the winner due to the fact that happiness and security it's the issue here AKA spending quality time for yourself. So based on personal quality time due to the fact that you have more money on the end of the day (cheaper town) Thessaloniki rule's 🎉.
Ahah that is a fantastic breakdown - thank you for sharing all of that! I hope other viewers find your analysis useful! I think I would rather live in Thessaloniki too if given the choice aha 🇬🇷

People behaviour
Athens: interrogation
Thessaloniki: not exept if you start talking AKA nobody asks
Price's:100€ equivalent (cost of the same things by housing to night life
Athens:€100
Equals
Thessaloniki €70
Thessaloniki it's 30% cheaper
Psychology
Athens: always nervous in the point of braking down every 30"
Thessaloniki: even if your house burned to the ground people always looking on the bright side.
AKA NY Vs LA 😂
City vipes as a hall
Thessaloniki it's a RELAXED Athens.

Thessaloniki: European
Crime and pollution:
Athens it's far more dangerous and serious crimes like killing someone it's more on a daily base news.
It's rear in Thessaloniki to hear someone being killed.
As for petty crime's Athens it's worst but you can also be a victim.
