I can say that at 47yrs old, i could not touch my toes. My back was destroyed due to working at a computer for over 10 hours per day usually more like 12 to 14. My core was shot and i woke up one morning when i could no longer touch my toes, barely could touch my knees and it took me about 20 minutes just to put on shoes. Anyhow, a relative came around and took a bunch of family out riding quads. Even with a year of physical therapy, yoga, walks, and more, i still was in the same shape with pain prevalent in most movements but i was determined to go ride a quad so ride a quad i did. I was certainly worried and id bet any doctor would have called me nuts, but i had never ridden a quad in my life, this was gonna be an adventure and by damned i was gonna make it happen. So we went and i went and we rode and id say maybe 20 minutes in, i could feel my back loosening. Took a couple sharp bumps which caught me in the butt pretty good and one of those bumps shifted something. I got off my quad immediately, reached way down and put my palms on the floor. My back still hurt a bit trying it, but i could flat palm the floor, something i hadnt been able to do for over a year. I was elated and rode out the rest of the day. Next morning i was good to go... sore as hell, but the good kind of sore. Put on my shoes and started planning on what quad to buy for myself. Got a Suzuki king quad 650 and rode it for a season before the motorcycle world presented itself as the next step. Bought a DR650 used for a song, rode that for 2 years, learned how to ride on that bike and at the end of the first year was conquering black diamond trails on the Hatfield McCoy trails in WVA. Just got my second bike, a GSXS1000GT for my 50th (a few months back) and now ride daily for anything i can. My core is tightening, my back is better than it has been since i was 20, and i still regret not starting sooner. Motorcycles, if ridden with care and the right gear and the right mindset is one of the best ways to stay fit and i love this video confirming that i am not a "one off". Go ride, ride safe, and get healthy.
I don't know if I actually burn much riding an upright Tuono 660 around 80-85 on the interstate commuting ~30 minutes. But it does give me a similar feeling as taking a cold shower or ice bath. Not to say I'm freezing, but I am feeling the wind and fully aware of my surroundings in a way I'm not being comfy in a car or taking a hot shower. It "snaps" me into the present, and engages all my senses.
It might not be a ton, but it's definitely not zero. Activating your mind like you're mentioning also takes quite a bit of energy. There was a study estimating that chess masters can burn around 6,000 cal during a tournament. Crazy!
I do strength training 5 days a week. Yeah, you do need legs and core strength for aggresive riding. I consider my weekends rides as my cardio sessions (it is more fun than doing treadmils or jogging 😂).
For what it's worth, if you want to get exercise while riding and you are interested in trying off roading / dirt riding - DO it. It's a ton of muscle work. If I go ride offroad for 2-3 hours it's the equivalent of jogging for 1-2 hours in terms of caloric burn. And engages a bunch of muscles not just legs (but a lot of leg). I completely underestimated this before I finally tried dirt biking (now adv biking). I was completely surprised at how much work it actually is. EDIT: To be clear, NOT suggesting off roading a sport bike as discussed in the video. But with an appropriate bike. And get instruction!
My motorcycles do far more for my soul and my mental well being, than for my muscles or my body. But hey, if I can burn a few calories too, all the better.
On my dual sport (ktm 500), when I ride the mountain trails (OHV) near me for a solid day, holy crap my whole body gets torn up and my legs are so sore I can hardly walk for 2 days. Granted I'm standing and constantly absorbing and manuevering with the whoops and berms, but man it's a full body, exhausting workout.
I also feel it the next day when doing off road riding! I had a full day class earlier this spring and was sore for a few days after since I was activating stabilizer muscles I don't normally use.
@@Dr.MichaelsMotorcycles For me "don't normally (regularly) use" is surely a part of my case - to be fair I'm hardly a picture of great fitness, but I'm fit enough to ride hard enough to tear up my muscles in the dirt. The thing that some may not fully appreciate is that the exercise (at any given phase in one's health goals) that they are willing to do is what at least they should do. Being on motorbikes in the dirt or chasing tennis balls on court cause me to completely forget how much discomfort I'm in, and that gets me outside and exercising, so it's great for me, for now.
5:19 perhaps cold weather too? At times, I do short rides in slightly colder temperatures ( around 0 Celsius ) so I do get quite hungry afterwards and I suppose the uptick in calories burn will continue even after I get home and my body continues to warm me up.
This sentiment is growing online- seemingly specifically here in the US and it’s really disheartening. Yes, riding a motorcycle will burn slightly more calories than sitting, not significantly so. Riding a motorcycle is great fun, and there are plenty of reasons to do so, but unless you are coming from a completely sedentary lifestyle, physical health should not be one of them.
That's interesting, I hadn't seen this topic discussed anywhere when I was doing research for this video. Where have you seen this sentiment before? Certainly your body uses calories even at rest, but depending on your basal metabolic rate and type of motorcycle riding you do, you can easily burn 2-3X your resting metabolism per hour. I don't think you should be disheartened by this, and I agree riding should not be a primary source of exercise (which I mention), but there are clear mental and physical benefits to riding a motorcycle.
If we decide to go with the 2023 Scrambler 1200xe,, i will need some type of heat deflection Kevlar etc, for my right leg because of the exhaust position, but that is manageable, also the triumph scrambler 1200xe will need a center stand. Its only the Tiger 900s that come fully loaded, the Aragon gt just doesnt come with heated seats but is ready for it.
I'm 62 years old and I put 25,000 on my Ducati Diavel V4 last year on mixed roads. I ride my bikes daily for my cardio. I also bench press 315 lbs since I'm older now. I limit my weight to limit joint issues. I also have a Superquadro Panigale V2 I definitely feel tired after a few hundred miles on the Panigale more than the Diavel V4. I did put a Termignoni Titanium Dragster exhaust and flashed my Diavel V4. I also work full time and I don't plan on ever retiring.
The psychological purpose for me is to have full use of the motorcycles in all terrain and all weather and physically i weigh between 235 and 245 with low body fat, ive seen the Ohlins company rep try to adjust the Scrambler 1200xe 2023 rear suspension to 30 percent sag with a 250lb rider and it will not accommodate that , it sinks to 50 percent, and heavy replacement springs by Ohlins are required, that is not a issue on the tiger 900 gt pro as its payload is 490lbs Any advice will be much appreciated thank you
I’ve been looking for info on this topic and it’s scarce at best. I’d love for you to touch on how many calories you think dual sport riders burn if they are doing some single track
Improves balance and alertness and a bit tiring for city rides. Does not burn calories significantly, cycle if you have to. Not talking about racing or benefits to mind.
Spending a few hours riding on tight, twisty mountain roads going up and down in elevation on a tall bike like an adventure bike? That's a workout. Some roads leave my shoulders and back sore for a day after a half day ride. A long enduro ride is even worse 😂
I ride a touring Harley so my calorie burn is probably not as much but it fits with what I want to do on a motorcycle. It is a reciprocal relationship, however. I work out (at 67) to be able to ride and ride to enjoy working out.
Hi Dr. Michael, thank you for all your productions. If possible can you please give your insight and advice on this. I currently own the tiger 850 2023 with handguards and center stand. I may buy a second bike to use as well, i do not use a car at all. Currently there are drastic price reductions on new vehicles. There are several all within the same price due to reductions. All are new, all are falling between 12,000 dollars and 13,200, they are,, 2023 tiger 900 GT Pro, 2023 scrambler 1200XE,, 2024 tiger 900gt Aragon,,, and 2024 Africa Twin base, and 2024 Africa twin dct, the africa twins dont come with centerstand or adjustable clutch levers but id like your insight, is the Honda that much more reliable or better in some way to not come fully loaded like the Gt Pros which the normal price was 17,000., thank you in advance for your help Take care
how hard would riding an agressive posture 168 kg sport bike in slow crawling traffic while carrying a laptop+accessories and 1 liter water bottle in your backpack be on the body?
Thanks this was insightful. Just a quick note the front facing camera is filming too low. I feel like it should be eye level. If you want to film the bike you should go wider
Thanks for the feedback, I agree. On the chin camera, I can't see the viewfinder once it's mounted, so it takes a bit of guess work to get the angle right.
Not me using this video to justify buying a sportbike 😂 But seriously speaking, after 2 hrs of riding on a weekend, I notice how my huawei smartband tells me I've burnt about 1,400 calories though I'm taking this with a grain of salt because I'm not sure how accurate it is
I doubt it's worth thinking about, like maybe you can have 1 extra twix bar after riding for a few h who knows and I think your smartband is counting the drive as exercise or something, 1400 is too much
@@lIlIllIlIllIlllIllIIIIIIIIIlII yeah, I agree with you, 1400 seems impossible ngl and that's why I can't really believe it... though I can use it as an excuse to my family if I'm riding too long, that "I've shed some calories" hahaha

I can say at 46yrs and an avid gym goer for 21yrs bodybuilding and at a lean 180lbs at 9% bodyfat 6’ tall and riding my manual bike at 120miles per week i can get away with eating a few more extra snacks in the evening. I drive too this also makes my driving 2fold in alertness.
Lots of possible routines, but it depends on access to the gym and overall fitness goals. If you don't want to get into heavy weight training, calisthenics with body weight and stretching is very helpful. For cardio, you can walk/run/swim/bike - whatever you enjoy the most.
