“Let the deaths roll off my shoulders” I could never... Every pikmin I lose hits like a needle to my heart. I just love those little guys :( If I lose more than like five I have to reset because I feel so bad for them
Yeah hating to lose Pikmin has a lot of benefit. If I didn't care for Pikmin lives then I would not be as good at the game as I am (not that I'm particularly skilled either way :/). However, fearing the death of your Pikmin can be a problem if it causes too much stress, plus a lot of wasted time if you reset EVERY time a few Pikmin die. It requires a nice balance. Accept that death is inevitable, but try to avoid it as much as possible (oddly enough its kinda a metaphor for life).
Yet another game I need to play that you've recommended now! From what you've said, it seems like the designers amplified unit management and death from something such as Fire Emblem, except it's integrated into the entire game. I'm intrigued to play Pikmin myself
Miyamoto actually compared it to Saving Private Ryan at one point- the whole squad, risking life, limb, and precious time as they trek hazardous territory- all to save one fallen comrade. No, I am not kidding.

It's good to step out of one's comfort zone and try new things. I didn't understand the appeal of truck simulators for the longest time, but after deciding to take the plunge during the Steam holiday sale I discovered that it's actually quite the chill experience. I've sunk many happy hours traveling the open road while vibing to smooth jazz on American Truck Simulator over the past month.

Pikmin is very daunting i completely understand your "fear". Its kinda like dead rising in a way. Stressful management. But the feeling you get when you complete it is indescribable. Sorta like getting a 100% on a paper you wrote that you put so much work into and the whole time you were thinking you were going to fail.
With this kind of response to Pikmin 1, I wonder how he'd feel about Pikmin 2. It tests a different skillset, and lets the player get away with more mistakes in the big picture, but on a day-by-day basis mistakes will be more costly. I feel like it would play into the original concerns KingK had a little more than this title did.
I kind of liked the exploration aspect of the pikmin games a lot. It's cool to strategize once you know what the map is like, but it's also really fun to move around the fire spouting edge path and get so far away from everything, discovering new things. I hope the next pikmin game is a very large interconnected world with new landing sites that can be unlocked.

I also recently became a fan of the series a few months ago. It's funny, I've owned the game since I was six but never played it much since I didn't understand it well. And I avoided it because it never seemed like my type of game, I was intimidated by the enemies, the time limit. But I finally gave it a chance, and enjoyed it, and like you the first run was awful, 28 days to complete. But that run was me not understanding the game, I didn't even know how to swarm. So when I played it again immediately after, I refined my strategy and as a result had a blast with it and realized why the game is so highly regarded. That intial 28 day struggle was turned into a satisfying 15 day adventure.
At 7:43 I somehow noticed that the Fiery Blowhog (mostly offscreen) to the right was experiencing a rare glitch where a particle effect from somewhere else gets attached to its snout.
I’m kind of the same. I love RTS games (mainly talking about single player here) but I always feel bad losing units, so I play them really slow and turtle until I have an overwhelming advantage so I can win with minimal casualties. Made games like StarCraft harder than they probably should’ve been.
The intro turned funny to me because the video title "learning to love Pikmin" brought to me a set of expectations I used as an excuse to avoid clicking on it for days.
@@kolo5141 -- So what? Who gives a shit. He never specidied Warcraft, and even if he had, he didn't say it was the hardest game out there, he simply said that Pikmin requires less from the player in comparison. I'm imagining something like Starcraft to be the basis of the comparison. That game is a clusterfuck of variables. So many units, buildings, resource managing, and upgrades to think about. Played it a few times on multiplayer with friends, never again. Too much going on at once for me.
I never managed to get into this game, but I love Pikmin 2. It made some design choices that made it a whole different game worth checking out and maybe making a video for!
The first time I saw this game was as a teaser in Luigi's Mansion. My little kid brain was instantly fascinated by it, but I can't remember what was it about Pikmin that made me want to play it. To this day: I have been waiting 20 years for Olimar to be reunited with the Dophin.
I completely understand that sort of trepidation towards a game you've never tried based on what you know of it. It took me a long time to play Pikmin too, over very similar feelings. But eventually, I came around and realised something that helped me start the game up and also learn to love it: it's a Nintendo game. They're going to take care of me through this adventure, and make sure I'm ready for any daunting task. And I was right.
Why is there a phenomenon of creators and admittedly myself suddenly picking up pikmin? This is the third creator that I watch that has made a pikmin video in the last few months
Literally yesterday I was looking for video essays about Pikmin. Loved the video man, just found your channel. Hopefully you get to play and enjoy Pikmin 2 as well (my favorite one). :)
Pikmin 2 is the most difficult and controversial one since they removed the time limit and introduced caves. I understand why this could be unappealing, but the world building and exploration in the second entry of the franchise is just unmatched to me. I couldnt get the same sense of wonder from any other game. From the piklopedia, progressing puzzles, and new creatures/pikmin it was truly a memorable game.
I got this as my first Gamecube game since it intrigued me, after playing it three times (One for bad ending, two for regular ending, three for collecting everything) I've never touched it since. I got my fill for the rest of my life it seems and have no real desire to play it again, neither the sequels. I just didn't like it enough.
i was also intimidated by the bizarre concept and the time limits, but after finishing pikmin 3 deluxe for the first time a few minutes ago i get it. great game
AYE! They've remade this for the wii, and you can get both 1 and 2 on the wii u with the added motion controls. Regardless, this is one of the few games that nintendo has re-re-rereleased!
@@wozzles9364 your right! Engrish haha, rereleased should be the right way to say it. Released twice so far....gamecube, wii, wii u was downloadable. Still though, you could have picked this up the last two generations unlike some other games.
Looking in the comments, I'm seeing so many people say that they're experiencing Pikmin for the first time, similar to you. Nintendo giving Pikmin 3 an enhanced Switch port is doing wonders for the entire series, as far as I can tell. Also, I totally understand being put off by the day limit, but 30 days is more than enough. Nintendo addressed this in 2 by giving you infinite days and making time freeze when in caves. They also turned the difficulty up quite a bit, and it's a lot scarier in caves compared to the surface because it is not easy to get more Pikmin while underground. Nintendo would address it all after Pikmin went AWOL for 9 years. Pikmin 3 brought back the day limit, but you earn the days by gathering fruit. You start with 3 and can get up to 99 total. The game is also much easier, making 3 the best place for newcomers. Sadly, 3 was stuck on the failure that was the Wii U until a few months ago, where Nintendo made a few optimizations to the game and added extra content to give old players something new to experience. As much as Nintendo gave new life to (along with many other Wii U titles) Pikmin 3, I am not sure how much longer we will have to wait before the big announcement that Pikmin 4 will be coming. With the Switch being a system known for bringing life to dead games/series, I feel like it's only a matter of time before Miyamoto's plant men get to embark on a new adventure. But, you never know. We did have to wait for almost a full decade before.
I played pikmin for the first time a couple of months ago. Funny how a Lockdown can help you try out things you otherwise wouldn't. Man, I loved it. Went on to play Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3 almost back-to-back, and it was incredible. Man, you can consider me a fan!
Did anyone else get legitimately creeped out by the puffstool? The sounds your pikmin make when spores are sprouting from their heads? It hit me hard the first time it happened to me.
Great video as always dude. I've had this game for years but I was always overwhelmed by the time constraint and my lack of familiarity with RTS games. I'll be sure to dive into it after watching this video.
I have been playing pikmin 1+2 since release, but i have never saw it as a speed contest. I just like going out in the areas from time to time and soak up the atmosphere. Sometimes i go on a no pikmin death run, which makes me care more about each enemy instead of the day count. This challenge is more applicable to Pikmin 2 tho due to its bigger share of enemies and no day limit. But still fun in pikmin 1
13:19 "olimar can't do anything on his own. He can't collect his own ship parts, he can't destroy walls, and he certainly can't go toe-to-toe with hostile alien predators." Actually he can, Olimar is indeed capable of inflicting damage on his own power. I actually beat Puffstool with just Olimar so I wouldn't have to worry about Pikmin getting corrupted.
Hmm. I liked it at first but found all the caves dull as fuck to be honest. To me it felt like it tried to do more of everything but somehow achieved less.

Yo same, I started with pikmin 3 on the Wii U
I also loved A Short Hike, so glad you played it.
I picked up Pikmin 3 Deluxe about a month ago, and it drew me in hard. It was a lot of fun, I’d love to play 1 and 2 someday.
Definitely worth picking up a GC for
"There were a few days I just couldn't get that shit part back in time"
the pikmin soundtrack, like that of the song from the "End of the Day" is just pure nostalgia for me.
I’m kind of the same. I love RTS games (mainly talking about single player here) but I always feel bad losing units, so I play them really slow and turtle until I have an overwhelming advantage so I can win with minimal casualties. Made games like StarCraft harder than they probably should’ve been.
I've loved this series since I first played them, and I can say the exact same thing. That first day can be so optimized.
The intro turned funny to me because the video title "learning to love Pikmin" brought to me a set of expectations I used as an excuse to avoid clicking on it for days.
Pikmin is way less demanding than a normal RTS.
Normal RTS? I finished Warcraft 2 when I was 14... in a language I didn't know.
Mom I gotta hang up new kingk learning to love video came out
(Also congrats on 200k subs!!)
Holy Christ that song during the end credits is straight up offensive.
Pikmin is one of those games that I just want to replay right after finishing it, I guess thats the speedrun aspect of it
Learning to love Pikmin is realizing that bomb rocks are both your friends and also not your friends
The first time I saw this game was as a teaser in Luigi's Mansion. My little kid brain was instantly fascinated by it, but I can't remember what was it about Pikmin that made me want to play it. To this day: I have been waiting 20 years for Olimar to be reunited with the Dophin.
Thanks for the vid. Pikmin has always been very intimidating to me, even if I own 1 and 2 on the Wii. But now I will try them thanks to you.
I can’t believe you confessed to murdering your Pikmin 😂
I have felt the same avoidance of Pikmin (and in some ways, RTS games in general) for similar reasons. Maybe I'll give this series another shot.
If u have a switch try the pikmin 3 demo. I hate RTS's but Pikmin is one of my favorite franchises ever
I just didn't like it enough.
i was also intimidated by the bizarre concept and the time limits, but after finishing pikmin 3 deluxe for the first time a few minutes ago i get it. great game
Never got into this series, i hope it's truly loved
I am so glad you played Pikmin! I am even happier that you recognize Pikmin speedrunners!
AYE! They've remade this for the wii, and you can get both 1 and 2 on the wii u with the added motion controls. Regardless, this is one of the few games that nintendo has re-re-rereleased!
What do you mean re re rereleased? It’s only been released twice hasn’t it?

Such a well written, and professionally done commentary...

This video has convinced me to give Pikmin a try. I love your videos.
Arlo would be proud
Tell us how you feel about the other pikmin games as well! I enjoyed this alot
While self-isolating I got into Pikmin. I would argue that it kept me sane, during that long 4 days waiting for my results.
Literally the exact thing that prevented me from picking up Pikmin! This video has certainly convinced me to pull the trigger.
13:19 "olimar can't do anything on his own. He can't collect his own ship parts, he can't destroy walls, and he certainly can't go toe-to-toe with hostile alien predators."
Actually he can, Olimar is indeed capable of inflicting damage on his own power. I actually beat Puffstool with just Olimar so I wouldn't have to worry about Pikmin getting corrupted.
Pikmin 2 is one of the greatest games ever made, full stop.
And I can’t find a copy for reasonable price anywhere
Hmm. I liked it at first but found all the caves dull as fuck to be honest. To me it felt like it tried to do more of everything but somehow achieved less.
Pikmin 2 is a mixed bag among the fans
Some people absolutely adore it
Some dont
@@blais6905 some people are objectively wrong, some aren’t.
@@Goobywoobygoo I mean, I guess lol
I like 2 the least out of all 3, but it's still great
Whats even more poggers is that its hacking community found a breakthrough in hacking that game, but thats besides the point now
The worst feeling in gaming is ending the day with 1 pikmin missing and seeing that poor guy get eaten alive as your ship flies away.
I was watching you earlier thinking... when's kings new video? Boom!
your voice is like Better ASMR. hopefully you don't this personally but your videos just relax me you talk so calmly and clearly. it's like listening to an angel's whisper of a nice warm but not too hot air putting me into a relaxed and sleepy state better then those people on twitch i enjoy your videos a lot thanks for helping me be able to feel relaxed in the way you talk.
I JUST PLAYED PIKMIN 3 YESTERDAY for the first time. The timing of this vid is crazy.
you dont just learn to love pikmin, pikmin love is automatic
