16:52 I've taken enough CAD courses that I knew, in the depths of my soul, that when you fixed the error you would say 'now we're cooking'. Great time. Thanks for spreading free knowledge ^.^
Freecad is INCREDIBLY powerful. It's easy to dump on it for its UI (which is not great, to say the least), but if you can get over that hill, you have an amazing piece of software, made more amazing by the incredible add-ons. It is my only experience with CAD software, but it seems to be shaping up to compete with the best of the best. It is remarkable software.
The improved blade profile built from the time 34:00 is perfectly achievable with FreeCad. I duplicated it with my version 0.18 from the dimensions of your SoliWorks model. On the other hand, the sweeping of the blade must be carried out otherwise, it is necessary to swap the profiles and the paths. It is also better hydraulically to specify the vertical profiles rather than the horizontal ones. SolidWorks has generated a blockage area near the machine axis which is not good for performance. It is also better to improve the profile of the compression path section by using spline lines instead of circular arcs. I do not know how to include a picture of the final result obtained with Freecad in my comment.
@@n3r0z3r0 I'm sorry, but I don't have the software or the time to illustrate my point with a video. I tried to do it but it is very long. The key to getting the same result as Solidworks model is, as shown, to reverse profile and path. I can assure you that it works and that you get a perfect compressor wheel. But I did not succeed in introducing the fillets to the edges.
Someone probably answered already, but to your question at min 25, just click on the bluish icon next to the sketch icon (three to the left of the line primitive). That will cut off everything that protrudes out of the screen.
Just want to start off by saying the video was an amazing introduction to FreeCAD. At times I lost you, but after watching it a bit and brainstorming I was able to figure it out! LOL at time 26:48 when you say "zero point 5!" love it.
Just stated with FreeCAD and 3D printing a week ago. I've sure got a headstart from you. Many-many thanks, learned tons already. And most important of all: what you do is very pragmatic, which allows me to assume the right modelling mindset. Outstanding!
To toggle visibility of drawing objects in FreeCAD: in the combo view click on model tab, highlight object you want to hide/see, press space bar to toggle visibility. You can also right-click on the object in the model tab and choose Toggle Visibility from the context menu.
JUST installed FreeCAD. I became proficient in Solidworks while testing graphics at Dell. Now, I have an engineering project I'd like to bring to fruition, and wanted to try FreeCAD because of the incredibly low cost. :) However, I was getting very frustrated with the UI in FreeCAD. After watching this video, I am certain the pain will be worth the reward learning FreeCAD. Thanks!
Thanks for a great introduction to FreeCAD. I managed to follow along with the video and I'm amazed that I could draw something that complex looking. I've played with Solidworks in the past so seeing that side by side comparison really made me look at FreeCAD in a better light. FWIW, FreeCAD 0.19 can now add the fillets but it still can't handle changing the shape of the blades (at least I couldn't get it to work). It's not like I'll ever design anything that complex though.
I have a lot of respect for your patience with FreeCad. I use Siemens NX at my job, and I just can't use FreeCad. Most CAD software have usability problems but at least the workflow is pretty equal. When it comes to UI/workflow FreeCad seems to have tried to reinvent the wheel and made it square...
I had to work a lot with FreeCAD before it felt natural in the transition. Once I got it, it feels great. I'd love to get my hands on NX sometime, I hear the surfacing is way better than SolidWorks.
Let me start by saying that this is an excellent concept for a video, perfectly executed. It is mentioned on another comment as well but the fillet issue can be resolved very easily. When you finished you compressor you could see that the lines of the generating bodies where still visible although it was all one body. This can be fixed and it's this behaviour that makes fillets harder. With a part open go to Edit>Preferences>Part Design>General. There click the first 3 options. This might also remedy the collapse in the rebuild after you changed the loft. I am not really sure why this was left unchecked by default. Maybe to make switching between direct and history based modeling easier. I don't know, but it feels like it should have been on by default. Please, show us any different results you might get with this different options setup.
Your object was broken because you edit the profile and alter the number of egdes, planes and vertexes with it. All other features after that can then not rely on the original edges as before. That is in my opinion the biggest problem of FreeCAD actually. You can not edit what you want in the history stack. You can do some workaround in building tactics to avoid that but this makes it really hard and last long. You can test it if you set the view only to the first sweep. It should show the complete object. Anyway, i love FreeCAD too. Its a really great programm. If they can fix this history problem (Topological Naming) it was perfect for my taste. Here my two tips: To hide something select it and just press space. To use the cut-view in scetcher press the bluish icon right next to the scetch icon.
This is now fixed, however you should install a fork from FreeCAD: github.com/realthunder/FreeCAD_assembly3. I think eventually it will be implemented in the main branch. This fork also contains the Assembly3 module. This fork fixes that problem and you are able to update old sketches/ features and in principle the model rebuilds without problems (similar to SolidWorks)
Thank you for this video. I use Solidwork all the time, but I'm looking for something just as capable but for the "Hobby" level to use. Very new to FreeCAD, but already it seems very good.

The filleting and lofting capabilities are the two main things I miss going from SolidWorks to FreeCAD. I spent a lot of time getting frustrated with fillets crashing my model before I figured out that I just shouldn't be using them as aggressively as I was. With lofting, it's annoying that you 1) can't loft to a point and 2) can't select vertex correspondence. I haven't been able to find a way around these limitations, and it's caused issues on a couple of parts I've designed

This is a great video - thanks! It's impressive to see that FreeCAD can pretty much hold its own against one of the titans. > I would probably do this a little bit differently if I was only doing this in SolidWorks... I'd be very interested in seeing a video of how you'd do this if you were only using SolidWorks. Much of the criticism that FreeCAD gets is focused on the workflow and user experience. Due to the high cost of commercial parametric modeling software, I haven't had a chance to use any. From what I gather, the more tedious operations in FreeCAD tend to be handled automatically SolidWorks. It'd be cool to see a comparison that points out the areas where FreeCAD's UI/UX could be improved.
I'd encourage you to try out OnShape (written by many of the same team as SolidWorks) and Fusion 360, both of which are available free of charge for non-commercial use. OnShape is restricted to creating only public documents, but that's not a problem for trying it out. Fusion 360 is becoming increasingly crippled in its free version (driving some people to FreeCAD I think!) but the modeller is still complete. It's worth trying them out just to see what is still missing from FreeCAD, which I would love to love, but at the moment its UI does slow me down. It's mostly little things - for example I'd like the freedom to be able to select a constraint type before I select any sketch features, I'd like to be able to dimension an arc to a line or an arc to an arc (shortest distance), I'd like to not have to worry about the difference between the three distance constraint types because I should be able to imply them with the mouse, I'd like the 'principle of least modification' to apply to sketch constraints (e.g. if you select a bunch of things for a symmetry constraint, the mirror line is chosen as the feature that least alters the existing sketch rather than the feature you clicked most recently), I'd like a "scale on first dimension" setting for the same reason, I'd like a concentricity constraint, I'd like the mirror command to add symmetry constraints, I'd like fewer modal dialogs, and so on. Little things that add up. Oh and I'd like to get rid of the awful graduated fill background, but there might be a setting for that, I'll have a look!
If you would like to have two arcs with the same center in freecad you can highlight both and apply the "=" constraint. The same also applies if you would like to make an arc center the same as your construction geometry circle.
35:51, it can take some time to update...your system time indicates it took you 9 minutes to replace that arc with the revised arc. that was exactly why i stopped learning freecad and switched to fusion 360. if i'm doing this for a hobby my free time is limited and i don't want to spend 30 seconds everytime i apply a fillet to a single edge. if your building from a plan freecad probably works fine but if your experimenting freecad will drive you away
Actually I got the same adjustment to work in under 4 minutes without more than two hours experience with FreeCAD. He just gave up too quick in my opinion. Saving hundreds of dollars per month is reason enough to love FreeCAD. I have a lot (10 yrs) of experience with Solid Edge and really think FreeCAD could beat the commercial softwares in a year or two.
Gabriel, I'm not sure but I think it might be open sketcher workbench>edit>preferences>sketcher>check bock that says notify automatic constraint substitutions. If not, I believe showing symbols is a default setting so you could probably get it from edit > preferences > reset all settings. Good luck
@@JokoEngineeringhelp I started over and it worked. Not sure what caused the problem, time line (15:30) could of solved the problem if I still add the document with the error. Wouldn't know now but thanks :).
When yours said "Fully constrained" mine says "Over constrained, and highlights about 2/3 of the constraints for deletion. What should I do about this?
This video is from 2018 and I guess you already know how to do it. But for those here who don't know it, you can do that hitting the button at the right of the sketcher icon with the magnifying glass (wich is used for setting the view perpendicular to the sketch plane). This button "cut" the part of the piece wich is in front of the sketch plane. And this is not the same that some comments say about toggling visibility.
Hi, in which program did you made that fluid dynamics animation in the outro? I just found your channel and I've already queued 7 videos about freecad :P Great content!
Hey Thomas! That's a great question. I found this example where it was used in a production environment: forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=16993 forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=30841 Overall I think it would be competitive, however companies usually tie in CAD with ERP/PLM type softwares, and that may make it not feasible for large companies. It doesn't have as robust capabilities for advanced lofting, fillets etc so complex stuff would be harder. Nonetheless, I think it's a fantastic software. I haven't touched the drawing environment, yet, and that would be an important determinant as well.
At 25:00 how to clip view to see full sketch? Use the button with the blue cube/transparent blue plane to toggle view. (the second left button beneath the point-constraint button) merry christmas
I had them written down before, but I made the compressor so many times it's all by memory now. Originally, this compressor was made up on the spot with these dimensions.
@@JokoEngineeringhelp thank you for yr reply! Nice job on doing this one! I am still fighting to do a simple model to visualise a future rc plane! I'll get there... eventually! 😁
Hi! I am trying to bend a tape(for SMD) in a profile of too many splines and arc. the tape has different shaped patterns in it. Can you suggest me the way for it?
I have a request for a video. If you could please make a video on designing a tube chassis in Freecad, That would be much appreciated. No on has made a tutorial on it and I would really like to do that.
You might be aware about it but take a look at flamingo tools work bench. To me it seems the most appropriate for that kind of work. www.freecadweb.org/wiki/Flamingo_Workbench
They were SolidWorks. They would be pretty easy to model in FreeCAD though. I recommend the curved shapes workbench, you can specify a twist value for a profile. See the video I have on it th-cam.com/video/Wls0cqhVCc4/w-d-xo.html
Hi Ian; I learned on SolidWorks and I moved to FreeCAD way easier than PTC Creo. I don't think it would be very difficult for you to move to SolidWorks from FreeCAD. I'm helping with some documentation on the topic here: wiki.freecadweb.org/Transitioning_from_Solidworks_to_FreeCAD
Hi, at the point of using the groove command to remove material from the blades, FreeCAD only adds a line to each blade rather than cutting from it using the sketch. How would I resolve this? Cheers
Sometimes the preview shows a cut from the sketch but doesn't update the graphics until the cut has been already made. Are you seeing this issue after the cut has been made also?
Maybe too late, 5 years after, but your video was very nice and I just have some comments, 1st. to have a better view while sketsching, View -> Draw Style -> Wire .... 2. when doing additing pipe, the external path did not work for me, I needed to do a path from the internal edges. Thanks, very useful your video.
Hello Joko Engineeringhelp. Firstly I want to thank you for this excellent video, but I would like to ask you two questions since I have been testing out FreeCad that to me seems to be quite good and I think this is an excellent student application. 1. What verison of FreeCad do you use in the video? 2. I have version 18 but it has bugs and flaws, but still I think it is at least excellent in many ways, does the dimension module work correctly after you make a workshop drawing? in the version I have the measuring points or gripping point of the model move to the right from the views in the drawing and after the points have moved dimensioning is impossible, plus editing the dimensions is not possible.
Hi Ivar, I use 0.18.4 and in more recent videos I use 0.19. I'm not sure if I know exactly what you mean by a workshop drawing but I use the techdraw workbench to create drawings and they are accurate to the model for me. I have a video in which I cover ways to add symbols and you can manually override dimensions using the same method but I wouldn't recommend it because it would break the parametric nature of the dimension. I have not had any problems with points moving around on me and I wouldn't be able to replicate the issue, perhaps the freecadweb.org forum would be able to help. Good luck th-cam.com/video/SbKWf7MalAk/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/cggBR1Ghq7k/w-d-xo.html
By the way, in most of my videos you should be able to look in the top left or top center of the screen and see the version. In this case it's 0.18. Hope that helps
@@JokoEngineeringhelp Thank you for the answer, I watched the TechDraw Workbench video, it is also quite good. There is a problem with the "Drawing" module that I first used, the grip point for the dimesion slide. But usng the procedure and the TechDraw module and the workflow yoou show in the video works. The problem is that the program is prone to crash. I still though think the program is good, but it is not very intutive. I have tested it in Windows, Linux and MacOS but the last one I mostly use.
@@ivarara Hi Ivar; I'm glad things are working better for you. I'm not sure why it would be crashing, a crash on my end is very rare. Perhaps the people on FreeCADweb.org forum may be able to help more than me. Good luck
@@JokoEngineeringhelp One thing is with Freecad (or Pythin), that on the left in the working window (the menu) is tha the menu does not show right (perhaps opertaing system related). There are some parts of the viwe hidden, for one reason or another.
In my personal opinion, hotkeys in Freecad are a lot more effective; in a sketching environment I can set constraints faster in FreeCAD than SolidWorks. Having a new daughter, I can model one handed easier when I hold her too with FreeCAD. The selection is nice where you can select multiple things without the ctrl key, SolidWorks I'm always keeping my left hand on that part of the keyboard. Plus, you can't beat the price! The functions you can get in FreeCAD for free that actually work cost a pretty penny in SolidWorks.
When I use SolidWorks, I regularly miss the FreeCAD symmetric constraint. There's always a replacement (often horizontal or vertical constraints on a midpoint and some other point), but the symmetric constraint is a parsimonious solution that doesn't clutter the sketch and feels natural to me..
@@JokoEngineeringhelp Just wanted to mention that you can configure hotkeys in SW, which I have done so it is very effective (Shift+C for Coincident, Shift+X to toggle construction, Shift+T for tangent, etc.) However, I agree with your points on the value of FreeCAD, and thank you for making these videos so I can learn a different software quickly and painlessly!
Thank you for the video, but it has been hard and impossible for my English and FreeCAD knowledge follow the complete work. I was lost around the minute 18...
Your videos are great but to complicated for a novice such as myself. Have you ever heard the expression "KISS" it means "(k)eep (i)t (s)imple (s)tupid". I think we all know you are very well versed on using Freecad. I'm wondering how good you would be at teaching the basics and building from there. Do you remember when you first started? It was'nt osmoses was it? It"s not osmosses for the novices you are trying to reach either. With that being said if you are not wanting to teach the fundimentals you should state that in your beginning monolog. Take an example from Arnold Roundtree he starts out simple and builds on that," Baby steps" for the lack of a better term.

I learned a lot from this video, thank you so much.
Joko, where can i active the opition to show the simbols of center, perpendicular, etc on my mouse sign? Nice vídeo!
Gabriel, I'm not sure but I think it might be open sketcher workbench>edit>preferences>sketcher>check bock that says notify automatic constraint substitutions. If not, I believe showing symbols is a default setting so you could probably get it from edit > preferences > reset all settings. Good luck
15:06 right-click on the search field go up on search and choose option hide, only... You got more space on the bar. BTW thx for the tutorial.
I am not getting to select the point to transfer/import it to the created datum plane (time 11:00) when I am in external Geometry tool.
Does it work to add the line the point is connected to and reference the end point of the line?
@@JokoEngineeringhelp Will try it out, doing the 4 cylinder tutorial A.T.M.
The menu to the left should list specific constraints to remove.
I just found your channel and I've already queued 7 videos about freecad :P
Great content!
Hi Joko, well done.
Would you say, according to this example, that FreeCAD can compete
with a industrial solution like SW?
Hey Thomas!
That's a great question. I found this example where it was used in a production environment:
forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=16993
forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=30841
Overall I think it would be competitive, however companies usually tie in CAD with ERP/PLM type softwares, and that may make it not feasible for large companies.
(the second left button beneath the point-constraint button)
merry christmas
ups sorry.
I mean the draw-point button, not point constraint...
@@thomasschrader915 Merry Christmas thank you!
HI, where did you get your measurements on the first sketches?! All by memory or had you written them before and you're just reading them! Thank you
I had them written down before, but I made the compressor so many times it's all by memory now. Originally, this compressor was made up on the spot with these dimensions.
@@JokoEngineeringhelp thank you for yr reply! Nice job on doing this one! I am still fighting to do a simple model to visualise a future rc plane! I'll get there... eventually! 😁
@@Flight72 Check out the curved shapes workbench if you haven't already. It was made to create air foils.
@@JokoEngineeringhelp I will for sure! thank you so much for your advice!
Hi! I am trying to bend a tape(for SMD) in a profile of too many splines and arc. the tape has different shaped patterns in it. Can you suggest me the way for it?
Which software are you using?
@@JokoEngineeringhelp I am using FreeCAD.

@@mrhypercityify I never saw that you had replied, Thank you for that link! In all my time searching never stumbled on it.
The super charger lobes, where they designed in FreeCAD or Solidworks?
They were SolidWorks. They would be pretty easy to model in FreeCAD though. I recommend the curved shapes workbench, you can specify a twist value for a profile. See the video I have on it

If I learn to use FreeCAD, can I transition to Solidworks easily? Or is Solidworks' tools/user interface very different?
- Thanks
Hi Ian;
I learned on SolidWorks and I moved to FreeCAD way easier than PTC Creo. I don't think it would be very difficult for you to move to SolidWorks from FreeCAD. I'm helping with some documentation on the topic here: wiki.freecadweb.org/Transitioning_from_Solidworks_to_FreeCAD
@@JokoEngineeringhelp thanks Joko
Hi, at the point of using the groove command to remove material from the blades, FreeCAD only adds a line to each blade rather than cutting from it using the sketch. How would I resolve this? Cheers
Sometimes the preview shows a cut from the sketch but doesn't update the graphics until the cut has been already made. Are you seeing this issue after the cut has been made also?
@@JokoEngineeringhelp Yes, the preview of the cut is what remains after I initiate the groove command and the graphics do not update
@@lourenzpervera2468 Same issue for me. Do you have a solution?
Maybe too late, 5 years after, but your video was very nice and I just have some comments,
1st. to have a better view while sketsching, View -> Draw Style -> Wire ....
2. when doing additing pipe, the external path did not work for me, I needed to do a path from the internal edges.
Thanks, very useful your video.
Thanks for the comment, glad it was useful
use Space bar to toggle the sketch or component OFF or ON under the model tab, then you will see your current sketch
Good luck
th-cam.com/video/SbKWf7MalAk/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/cggBR1Ghq7k/w-d-xo.html
@@ivarara Hi Ivar;
I'm glad things are working better for you.

Can't add relations by dragging?
Why do you use FreeCAD and not Fusion 360 or Autodesk Inventor? Both of them are accessible for free if you are a student/hobbyist.
I have fusion and Onshape on the channel, but I focus on FreeCAD because love open source and want to support it.
Are there ways in which FreeCAD is better than SolidWorks?
In my personal opinion, hotkeys in Freecad are a lot more effective; in a sketching environment I can set constraints faster in FreeCAD than SolidWorks. Having a new daughter, I can model one handed easier when I hold her too with FreeCAD. The selection is nice where you can select multiple things without the ctrl key, SolidWorks I'm always keeping my left hand on that part of the keyboard. Plus, you can't beat the price! The functions you can get in FreeCAD for free that actually work cost a pretty penny in SolidWorks.
Hey Refke van Lavleren; I've also noticed that FreeCAD can fillet some edges that Solidworks cannot!
+ $ 200 a month not spent.
Thanks for this video! Please use Metric!
👍👏
Thank you for the video, but it has been hard and impossible for my English and FreeCAD knowledge follow the complete work. I was lost around the minute 18...
Great video, though your proficiency in SW seems to be more
Wizardry!
it would be better to split this into two videos, one fore freecad and the other for solidworks

Check out my videos for beginners, but approaching every video like it's for someone who is totally new isn't the direction I would like to go
I tried to follow, but it is too confusing. I wish you would not make mistakes.. it is video, you can prepare the steps on paper or edit the video...
I have a bunch of people who tell me to leave mistakes in for troubleshooting. It's a no-win situation for me
Inches??? Dude must suffer from sadomasochism :-)))))
Lol what a clickbait. Title says it's side-by-side, but actually Joko switches between FC and SW
