I use my semi deeps most of the time. It's what I pick up first, like people have their "goto ratchet" semi deeps are my go to sockets. Great subject & video!
We've all backed our ratchet up against a fame rail or something similar and gotten out ratchet stuck and wished we had semi deeps I don't know how anyone could claim they are useless
I’m no pro but have been working on my own vehicles for 20 years. I appreciate the comments and concerns of the pros. I myself have gotten by without mid-deep sockets by switching to a different wrench, socket, extension or just using my fingers when I run out of clearance due to a frame rail or other obstruction. My HF 3/8”pass-through set has come in handy and so have ball-joint articulated sockets when clearance, length or obstructions are an issue. Ditto with ratcheting box end wrenches. There’s always another way. But if you’re wrenching for a living and this will save you time then go for it. Abstract Tool has a lifetime warranty, 14 piece, chrome, 6 point, 3/8” mid-length metric set with all sizes from 6-19 mm which everyone speaks highly of for just $35.58 including shipping.
Funny seeing this vid in my feed today. Years ago when I first got heavy into truck and equipment repair I needed a set of semi-deep but I had no money for good tools. I bought a set of Harbor Freight sockets and took them to the cold saw and cut them down. Fast forward 12 years later to today and I just found that old set in the bottom of my parts drawer.
Thanks for sharing your expert opinion, you are absolutely right. I am planning to buy a socket set, now I will buy a semi deep socket set for my home garage DIY jobs.
had to get to my sienna 2k power steering bolt on top at 11 oclock and was stuck against the body metal. had to use 1/4" small extension and 3/8" 12mm socket. that gave me enough clearance. would love to have the semi deep 12mm. LOL
The last purchase i made from my S.O. guy was a full set of 3/8' chrome metric semi deeps. i went with chrome for the thinner side wall over impacts. I don't use them all the time but when I need them, MAN, they are great to have.
Yes absolutely I use semi deeps nearly daily. They are very handy to have. I have a set of snap on 1/4 inch and 3/8. Great sockets. They are my favorite.
I have rails of sockets that I've modified to fit my need. I have 10mm sockets of all different lengths because I've had to cut them to suite my needs. Some with a flattened end. some cut super shallow. Some cut for mid length. etc
Hello hi sir great post, yep I have them semi deep sockets they really come in handy often the bolts are just a little on the long side shallow is to shallow and deep is to long to fit in, that's why I bought them. And they work really well for a couple of my special projects thin wall and deep compared to a regular socket but not as long as a deep
Absolute necessity , they are my go to sockets . They can be used for most situations , are the most versatile and can save your butt sometimes. Love em.
Until you realize (as I did) that there is a considerable overall length difference (between a semi deep and a shallow with a short extension) you will scoff at semi deep sockets. I finally borrowed my last semi deep impact in 3/8. Solid advice being told in this video. Thank you.
Semi-deeps are my favorite and most used sockets. Tend to fit almost everywhere a shallow does and a deep doesn’t. It’s the Mama Bear of the socket world.
Semi Deep saves your life on the 06’ Chevy Aveo intake manifold bracket when trying to remove the intake to do a head gasket. Instead of fighting with a swivel socket to get the right angle etc.
I use semi deeps 99.9% of the time and that includes swivel impact semideeps as well. Best sockets ever. Honestly thats what i use day in day out. I dont know how people can work with out them. Maybe is cuz im so used to them. I hardly used my deeps and shallows, those sockets are not even in my cart, they stay in my box.
Great vid!! Just had a minor discussion with somebody as to why I have so many sockets last week. When time is money the semi deeps are well worth their weight in chrome!! Even the extra deep be a great time saver when I need them.
not something I use everyday, but when I need them I have them. did a set of hemi exhaust manifolds today, semi deeps and long box flexhead gear wrenches got the job done. have a set of standard semi deeps too, just in case but mine are snap on and the thing I hate about them, maybe different now, but when I bought them only available in 12 point.
I use my semi-deeps almost exclusively instead of a shallow. They are my go-to. This is the only socket set that I will probably never EVER get rid of.
in the late 80s i got a husky set of sockets there deep sockets were like simi deep compared to my craftsman deep so i used them up in tell 2005 and now i have simi deep but i still have my husky's to there invaluable
Yeah I started learning how handy they are years ago using 5 of my dad's semi deep 3/8 9/16,5/8,11/16,3/4, and 15mm his were craftsman usa he was a tow motor mechanic where he worked, until the factory was sold to another company that farmed out forklift repairs and parts as part of a contract for cat 4 fork 56 inch rack forklifts he worked for Anchor 🔱 Glass co. 44 1/2 years
For those who say that there not needed, have not been wrenching very long. I have the snapon semi-deep impacts 1/2 drive. I use them all day every day...
After watching this in February I was still in the Ill deal with it camp. I kept working with only shallow or deep thinking that I would not need them because the traditional sockets always got the job done even if it was difficult sometimes. Well FRM I just wanted to come back to this video and thank you for putting the thought in my mind because I broke down and bought some, Best decision ever. SUBSCRIBE TO THE FRM CHANNEL. ITS THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING.
Great video. Depends on the job. I bought 1/4 and 3/8 chrome metric in the Gearwrech brand and 3/8 metric impact in the SK brand. Don t use the much but when I do I'm glad to have them.
I have not used them yet. I remember years ago when Sears offered them. I didnt buy them. I even remember when Sears put them on clearance and I still didnt buy. I should of bought a couple metric sets on clearance. They looked better than the Gear Wrench versions today. So far, when I come upon a situation where I could use it, I just grab a 45 or 60 degree box long handled box wrench.
Another use of a semi deep socket is in the 1999 to 2004 Dodge/Chrysler(the Canadian version of the Dodge Intrepid) Intrepids,Chrysler Concorde and 300Ms.The top two bellhousing bolts,a shallow socket won't work including a deepwell. The semi deep fits in the spot just right.
I was debating if I should add a set of semi deep impact sockets to my Arsenal . But after watching this video I’m definitely going to get a set off the snap on truck 👍
I've acquired several situations working on the 4x4 trucks and farm machinery being a farm kid,to know that you need semi deep sockets as much as you do offset wrenches, and I have a set of gearwrench semi deep sae and metric 1/4, and 3/8 chrome my next addition I want to put with it is the equivalent impact semi deep sockets in the same drive sizes..
Have them both in SAE/MET in 3/8 they are the ones that I get first. When I first got them i was made fun of for spending the money. Now everyone has a set. I got tired of longing mine out. Thanks for the video FRM.
I put all my regular deep sockets in the bottom of my toolbox. Maybe one nut out of a hundred has too much bolt sticking out for a semi-deep to get. Semi-deeps are a good bit cheaper than regular deeps.
Great video thanks brother. I wish I would have had them many times. Really don't know how I made it 30yrs. without them. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks. Heavy equipment yes sir many times I wish I had them
The first sockets I bought was semi deep! More "bang" for my buck, can tackle almost anything a shallow can, has that depth for a stud that the shallow doesn't, and unless it's a really long stud I don't have to go to a deep well or a ratchet wrench! So absolutely an awesome tool, the standard and metric semi deep sets are my go to when I jump on a job. Additionally like you said is a little longer and gets you clearance like for your knuckles!
They probably will become your go-to sockets; anytime you spend that much money, you look for ways to use them to justify the expense. The FRM makes several good points about how useful they have become for his work. As engine bays become even tighter over time, the more likely you'll need extra shallow sockets when there's virtually no room to maneuver. Soon after, you'll need a Tite-Reach (or Snap-on FRW10) extension wrench for fasteners you can barely see (let alone get a wrench on) that will plague you. You'll spend more time with the vehicle up on a lift so you can comfortably access bolts from underneath.
I bought a set of imperial semi-deep flex impacts, I bought them at a swap meet cheap because of the price. I find I use them more and more, I'll soon buy some better sets in imperial and metric
I havent hit the point, where I needed them yet in my time. Known about them for years, but just havent had to hit that middle ground, but I might eventually.
I bought some 3/8" SO semi-deep impacts on a whim a few months back; they were on special. Disappointed I haven't bought them sooner. Go-to tool/socket. They work damned near everywhere.
Semi deeps are my go to. I have several sets of Cornwells. I even have some 12 point semi deeps. Don’t want to work without them Also, love the cut style edits on this video. Much better than the fades
Oh and also my momma 96 f250 460 bbf supercab longbed 2wd, originally a power stroke diesel truck,is a pain to work on without semi deep sockets and offset wrenches..
I have one set of semi deep sockets, 1/4 metric chrome snap on, got them on a deal in the flyer with a 1/4 ratchet, really like them, very useful and essential when you need that clearance
You're right man, semi deep sockets come in key! I only have the 1/4 inch metric set but they have proven to be quite useful, want to get the 3/8 set but only when it's on sale with a ratchet;)
I use my semi deeps on a daily basis. Not too short not too long. Just a good in between. I even have semi deep 1/2 drive impacts from snappy. They’re my go to 1/2 inch socket. I’ve still yet to buy my 1/4 set but I’m going to soon.
I just recently got introduced into semi deep/ mid length sockets. I bought 1/4 and 3/8 chrome and impact because they are so handy I couldn’t believe I’ve survived so long without them
For people who only work on cars sometimes, there’s always another way if you have other wrenches, sockets or extensions to turn to when you run out of length or clearance. But if you’re a pro and time is money, then I can see how these make sense.
Dunno how i worked so many years without them. Have them in 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 drive sizes. All useful. 1/2 not as necessary as the others. But can be handy.
I'm not a professional tech but I can see how a semi deep can come in handy all though I've never come into a need for them. But then again all my vehicles are simple and easy to work on.
I never considered the idea of a semi deep, just never thought of it. But recently ran into a situation where I had to have one loosening the belt tensioner on my 3.5 Altima. I just made one, but need to get a set.
IM 32 been working on cars since I can remember. Never used a semi deep. I'm sure I've could've used one a time or 2. But I think they're a luxury in my opinion. But if you can afford them buy them. I'll probably get a ser soon an give them a try. 👍
I use my semi deeps most of the time. It's what I pick up first, like people have their "goto ratchet" semi deeps are my go to sockets. Great subject & video!
JUSTIN ATV likewise
Same here.
We've all backed our ratchet up against a fame rail or something similar and gotten out ratchet stuck and wished we had semi deeps I don't know how anyone could claim they are useless
Not a mechanic so never really needed a semi deep. Definitely see the benefits, so now I want a set lol.

I went years without and then my first set of SnapOn sockets were 3/8 semi-deep impacts - changed my world! You are right - they are my go-to sockets.
Thanks for sharing your expert opinion, you are absolutely right. I am planning to buy a socket set, now I will buy a semi deep socket set for my home garage DIY jobs.
Absolutely Essential especially with how tight engine compartments are on cars these days
had to get to my sienna 2k power steering bolt on top at 11 oclock and was stuck against the body metal. had to use 1/4" small extension and 3/8" 12mm socket. that gave me enough clearance. would love to have the semi deep 12mm. LOL

I use my semi deep sockets alot.Semi Deep Sockets are a lifesaver.Another Great Video FRM!
Absolute necessity , they are my go to sockets . They can be used for most situations , are the most versatile and can save your butt sometimes. Love em.
Semi deep snap on 1/2 inch drive with astro nano my go to set up 95 percent of the time. Love semi deep sockets
had to use a semi deep for a power steering pump today, wouldn't be without them, great video!!
Until you realize (as I did) that there is a considerable overall length difference (between a semi deep and a shallow with a short extension) you will scoff at semi deep sockets. I finally borrowed my last semi deep impact in 3/8. Solid advice being told in this video. Thank you.
If you’re working on compact Japanese engines all day, you need semi deep sockets. I use mine every single day.

I only have 1 semi deep socket it’s a 9/16 and it is essential for in bolting a Horton fan hub on semi engines

Yup! My go to sockets as well. They just work for me.
I'm always rewatching your videos for information and tool buys I'm gonna get some 1/4 semi deeps now. I have semi in my tool roll for my bike
My first sockets I bought were the snap on chrome 3/8 semi deep sockets
Great video. Depends on the job. I bought 1/4 and 3/8 chrome metric in the Gearwrech brand and 3/8 metric impact in the SK brand. Don t use the much but when I do I'm glad to have them.
I absolutely 100% agree with you on the semi-deep sockets
Like you said, sometimes they are the only thing that will fit in certain situations !
I go with shallow and semi and just use an extension to make it a deep well, makes the deep well redundant.
Got semi deep in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive metric. Great tools to have.
what kind of 1/2 do you have
@@lnvertedCross i have snap on
Don’t need them on buses very often but can still see the need for them.
I run semi deeps pretty much strictly. Best of both worlds. Good video!
I use mine, only thing to use in some situations. 1/4" and 3/8" in my box. And I am not a trained mechanic. Yes, an essential tool.
Yup that's first tool my boss recommend me to buy and they sure come in handy!
I love my semi deep sockets the first sockets I brought from snap on like 20 years ago
I find the snapon short extension and shallow socket goes well enough for me
I usually use my pass through socket set before I go to my semi deep sockets... I do use them but a good mechanic can make do without them...
the astro low profile 3/8 and 1/2 impacts are great too
Yup. Just bought both. My favorite socket set
I have both 1/4 and 3/8 also .an use them all the time .
Those that say semi deep are useless, have never really worked on cars. Fight me.
I agree
Every tool has a place. Even if seldom-ly used. Only a non-tool guy would every say any tool is useless. 😜
Been a tech 32 years (work on cars every day) never owned or needed semideep. So where do you want to meet for the fight
Absolutely need them. The other day at work had to put a new tensioner on An Altima that was really close to the frame rail.
I was debating if I should add a set of semi deep impact sockets to my Arsenal . But after watching this video I’m definitely going to get a set off the snap on truck 👍
Real techs know they’re necessary
I've acquired several situations working on the 4x4 trucks and farm machinery being a farm kid,to know that you need semi deep sockets as much as you do offset wrenches, and I have a set of gearwrench semi deep sae and metric 1/4, and 3/8 chrome my next addition I want to put with it is the equivalent impact semi deep sockets in the same drive sizes..

I'm with you 100%. It took me a while to finally get my semi deep set, but I put them to immediate use. I'm still looking for affordable impact sets.
The first sockets I bought was semi deep! I got some semi deep in 1/4 about a month ago and I love em plan on buying 3/8 soon
Wow I thought the same thing and I am not a master mechanic. Cool. Thanks.
Ya they are handy I have a few and I have one wrench stile 10mi that has a 3/8 cut out u can put a exstention on it it will get u in to the tuff spots
Just bought me some Snap-On semi deeps today, can’t wait to use them, hopefully the become my go to sockets.

Ours became the go-to socket.
It's been a year since your post. Are they your go -to, now?
You're completely right. Semi-Deeps are super useful. I wish TOPTUL made semi-deeps. I could sell a ton of them.
Dennis, When/If they ever do. Put me in line for a set of each!!
Am team semi deep i have 12 point 6 point , chrome ,impact ,3/8 drive 1/4 drive
LOVE THEM cuts down on time swapping from shallow to deep
I bought a set of imperial semi-deep flex impacts, I bought them at a swap meet cheap because of the price. I find I use them more and more, I'll soon buy some better sets in imperial and metric
Haven't watched the video yet, haven't looked at comments but I'm going to say right now that yes absolutely semi feels are the way to go.
I havent hit the point, where I needed them yet in my time.
Known about them for years, but just havent had to hit that middle ground, but I might eventually.
Good video. I use semi deeps most often. All three lengths are good to have, though.
Absolutly need semi deep. I even bought a collapsible snapon extension
I just got a set from matco a couple of weeks ago and I love them I wish I had them sooner!
Yes they are essential. At the 10% chance they are needed, they can make a 100% difference. Good luck wrenching.
Don’t want to work without them
Also, love the cut style edits on this video. Much better than the fades
+bosborn1 thanks on the edits I think that is the winner for me to
Oh and also my momma 96 f250 460 bbf supercab longbed 2wd, originally a power stroke diesel truck,is a pain to work on without semi deep sockets and offset wrenches..
My semi deeps are my main go to sockets, great video!
Couldn’t live without semi deeps and extra shallows. Love them and heavily depend on them everyday.
I sure as heck needed them today. Water pump on Lexus.
I have one set of semi deep sockets, 1/4 metric chrome snap on, got them on a deal in the flyer with a 1/4 ratchet, really like them, very useful and essential when you need that clearance
I think they are great! Another tool in the arsenal
Semi deep is a future purchase for me...definitely!
Snap on 3/8 semi deep, my main sockets for the last 15 years. Everything else is secondary
I just recently got introduced into semi deep/ mid length sockets. I bought 1/4 and 3/8 chrome and impact because they are so handy I couldn’t believe I’ve survived so long without them
I use my semi deeps 90% of the time they are my go to!
They are great and autozone sells super shallow sockets for 20$ a set great deal
Totally essential tools. I have the metric and sae. As a line tech you don’t have any time to waste with the tool that’s not doing the work.
And you don't want to waste time going back to the tool box to grab what you wished you grabbed in the first place lol..
If I only had one set of sockets it would be my snap on semi deep impacts and wobble extensions.I use mine daily.
I'm not a professional tech but I can see how a semi deep can come in handy all though I've never come into a need for them. But then again all my vehicles are simple and easy to work on.
I like the fact that the semi deeps give you just enough to grab onto when removing.
Try the gearwrench midlength socket sets they are affordable and still apex tool group.
i love my semi deep sockets and i always use them .
After a part replacement fiasco on my car, I think I'm going to buy semi deep sockets and try it again..
I love my Gearwrench semi deep sockets.
