Maybe it's just because I grew up in the late 80's / early 90's but London was a much better city back then - more greenery, less congestion, more traditional and iconic "London" sights and sounds. Ahhhhh I miss those days.
In every one of these videos of old shots of cities like New York, Los Angeles, or London the comment section is always full of people who “miss the good ole days”. In reality 20 or 30 years from now people are gonna be saying the same thing it’s a never ending cycle

Mobile phones where a rarity back in the 90s. Only a handful of people I know had mobile back then, compared to now where finding someone without one is a rarity.
Back when there was individuality, people are wearing different styles of clothing in different colours. Nowadays its just a huge mob, everyone looks ugly with their cheap dark and bland clothes. Not forgetting the phones, and walking aimlessly.
Si Fi for us who were teenagers in the mid 90s, fashion was connected to the genre of music you liked. So it was the click suits and baggy jeans if you were into Jungle or Hip Hop, checked trousers for the House n garage lot, then the indie/grunge lot had their style. We had proper music scenes then, now there is none of that.
I was born in London and in 1995 I was 23 years old and working at Selfridges. I am 52 now and just remember all the shops that once stood there. I still pop into Selfridges as this is my favourite shop. I remember the Bharatts shoe shop on the corner, C and A and HMV. I loved this video it really took me back in time. A real shame how Oxford Street looks now.
I don't suppose you remember the name of the coffee and donut cafe in the Lower Ground Floor services arcade? It was run by 2 Italian brothers and I gather they relocated somewhere. I used to go there with my mum - they did the best donuts!
Anne, I used to love the Tea/Coffee place downstairs as they served the best scones too with cream. I cannot remember the name but truly the best times and fond memories whilst working there. All changed now as I still go in quite regular.

The whole gangsta trash stuff began in the 90s, so I don't know which part of 90s London you grew up in. In fact some parts of London were even worse back then, because pre-gentrification the ghettos were real no-go zones, but we didn't have ready phone cameras to prove it.
All over the country go outside of London see the real racism and xenephobia and cave mentallity in other UK cities and towns,London is not the only place that has crime the whole of the UK has a race issue ,crime issue ,drug issue and poverty issue hate crime issue too.

@Manisha-K-Patel - I just mentioned this to a few friends how many stores have gone. I visited in november 2024. Oxford Street has declined.
