How I love this! Jose and Kiri sing this so well together. I love her little looks of encouragement around 01:46. She is such a sweet character. The charisma of these two is what makes this. Leni's admiration of the performance also helps. Two great great singers.
Fabulous! I remember when they recorded this back in the 80s. It was my introduction to Dame Kiri's singing, which I have listened to ever since. Nobody can sing like she can!
Every once in a while there is a special moment in music - one that can not be topped by another. Whether it is Itazak Perlman playing the theme to Schindler's List or Beverly Sills singing "Vilia". Here is the most tender version of "One Hand, One Heart" from the studio recording with Leonard Bernstein the composer and conductor leaving us a musical moment. The choice of opera singers was criticized by some, but hearing Jose Carreras and Kiri te Kanawa sing this duet is an exception. A gem of a performance.
Wow I've got this recording on cd. Love it !! Leonard Bernstein had a lot of patience and that's allso the reason why so much people could work with him. The people who where involved with those recordings had much luck to work with Leonard Bernstein
i just found this video to do my mother a favour but as i heard this while my mother was crying because of happiness ich started to feel well hearing this song (:
Hello I really enjoyed the videos of west side story recorded in the studio Leonard Bernstein is truly an exceptional composer musicians and the talent of Jose Carreras and Tiri Kanawa I lachance great to own this DVD I watch it often, always with the same you also enjoy other videos that are very good, music is an art so wonderful it with you in difficult times but also when all is well Greetings from France
I can't go back to listening to the original movie soundtrack version. I just can't. These two ruined that for me. These recordings are the gold standard for this score, in my opinion.
What artistic role models these are for succeeding generations! A contemporary composer, lyricist, or vocalist in this genre for the 21st century is...?
MultiMusicfan99 I hear you. The only modern-day lyricist who comes to mind is Lin-Manuel Miranda. But the Bernstein/Sondheim collaboration will never be duplicated.
This brings me to tears every time I hear this particular recording! This is just so beautiful and perfect! Gosh it's just amazing! This is beautiful music that just comes from the heart!
Bernstein is a magician!! My god What a beautiful version!! I never liked any of the singers here. But thats ofcorse a matter of taste!! I would have loved to here Lucia Popp and Placido Domnigo sings this duet!! But what an orchestra here And a super emtional conducting, This man was a genius. And what a composition , one of the most beautiful Ballads ever.
“Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet.” ― Plato . . . . Amen, Will
One Hand, One Heart was never intended to be in this show. This was written for Candide, but some "crosspolinations" took place due to the fact that they were being written at the same heart. What a genius to make it work on so many levels of intellect
This take represents a pinnacle. Have been watching it for several years, and it never fails to give me gooseflesh. Carreras was a perfect match for Kiri; his voice is beautiful but not overpowering, which is a good thing for this kind of song. For example, Placido Domingo would have been a horrible choice for this. In fact, Kiri overpowers Carreras slightly in several spots, so the mixer might have brought out Carreras' voice a little more in those few spots. But i'm nit-picking. It's as close to perfection as a duet has ever been, to my ear.
No problem. We can get carried away on the internet. We have to all remember that there are people out there we are communication with. Actually they are both singing well.
Rockand Roll. Thank you so very much for your kind comments. You are right. These are probably amongst the two most beautiful voices on the planet. These two are such modest people too. That's why Leni chose them.
no, it's primarily The Greatest new York Studio Musicians, with some Symphony players added. Most of whom we had the honor to worl\k with our entire Careers.
Before saying since(as,like) he(she) sings in a language that is not his(her, its), think like it you do ..... and in the effort that it(he,she) does for it, I believe that it(he,she) makes it very well each one in his(her, your) place
Clarinetist looks like Charlie Russo to me, but so much younger than he was when he was our quintet coach at MSM in 1974-75. I could be wrong, of course.
hi sorry- was that reply meant for me or someone else? cause I didn't mean in any way to reference those sort of politics. I was just saying the recording sounded very nice =]
Well my god, Carreras tried his best. If Bernstein wanted an american tenor then he should have picked them. I personally think that Jose did a marvalous job.
If you stumble upon this video, you'll be in tears before the end of it. Absolutely incredible.
I’m crying listening to Carreras right now.😢
Agreed@
One of the central cultural figures of the 20th century. So nice to see him remembered, and now commemorated in "Maestro", a terrific film.
Julius Baker's flute is an exquisite complement to this masterpiece. We miss you, Lenny. THANK YOU for ALL that you gave us.
Agreed. Juli was my mentor.
I just can’t get enough of the music from this movie.
We love you Carreras

This is pure genious. Leonard Bernstein with a ragtag group of musicians and a handful of famous singers makes this an incredible collection.
i love it when kiri just turns to jose and smiles when he starts singing. It's exactly the response i have. It's truly magical.
at 1:43. Goosebumps.
A brilliant talent acknowledging an equal. 😮
Phenominal interpretation and performance - renders one into tears tis so beautiful!
Fabulous! I remember when they recorded this back in the 80s. It was my introduction to Dame Kiri's singing, which I have listened to ever since. Nobody can sing like she can!
Am so lucky to have heard her in concert at the Millennium Dome many years ago. So honoured.😢
My heart breaks every time I hear this. Such beauty.

“Just destroyed me.” Lenny, you were perfection.
Wow
I've got this recording on cd.
Love it !!
Leonard Bernstein had a lot of patience and that's allso the reason why so much people could work with him.
The people who where involved with those recordings had much luck to work with Leonard Bernstein
This is music :))) especially when we see the artists and the composer !!!!!
I usually find one hand one heart a rather boring song but with this performance I just held my breath till the very end! amazing!
It was never boring.😮
Such lovely voices..a very beautiful performance!
His music is so rich and it makes me feel so alive. Gifted doesn't describe it.
i just found this video to do my mother a favour but as i heard this while my mother was crying because of happiness ich started to feel well hearing this song (:

This is one of the most glorious sounds to ever enter my ears. Perfection!
Mind-blowing how beautiful it is.😮
I'am always coming back to this
I love watching talented musicians & singers rehearse, collaborate together like this. It's so brilliant & powerful.
Oh how glorious. I shall only watch the 1961 version. Thank you so much for this video. 🌷🌷🌷 (Netherlands-eu)
Very moving and enjoyable moment to watch. Thanks for the upload.
Omigosh. I never saw Carreras young! He was deliciously handsome! 😮
God really does bestow a certain few with pure genius.
Carreras , Eres el Mas Grande !!!!!!!!!

R.I.P. LEONARD BERNSTEIN - 25.08.1918 - 14.10.1990 - Shared on G+ 25.08.2016.
Speechless always !!!!!
The instrumental introduction is simply overwhelming.
It's been a long time since I've cried like that.
Amazing & truly beautiful video. Thanks for the post.

One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written ahhh! this is amazing!!!!!
Ahhh, the halcyon days of opera singing...when singers sang in tune, and that was the norm. What a concept [heavy sigh].
I can't go back to listening to the original movie soundtrack version. I just can't. These two ruined that for me. These recordings are the gold standard for this score, in my opinion.
The maetsro himself.as kiri said like havn mozart or handel conductin his own work. I dont understand why some hav critisized the wrk!
Totally agree, It doesn’t get any better than this !
Agree!
Absolutely gorgeous.
La pareja perfecta, no deja nunca de impresionarme esta canción, tan bella, tan sublime, gracias Leonard ❤
This song doesn't make me tear up at all. Nope, not at all. Not even a little. Every time I hear it I don't cry.
That reassuring nod at 1:45
Grande musica, grandi interpreti, lavoro interessantissimo da seguire! -sembra di essere lì con loro- grazie-
Such beautiful music.
Fabulous!
Such beauty! Heart-stopping!
One Hand One Heart is my favorite ballad from West Side Story. So much feels...!
Beautiful
Não há palavras para tanta beleza...
an oasis of pure genius.....
Jose's phrasing in this is just killer.
This reminds me of songs i sang in catholic church in lent growing up

this is where the hand of God came to earth
An insurmountable illustration of one small slice of American history in musical form from masters of the art: Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
Now that is great orchestration.
No doubt - completely brilliant.

Kiri was born in New Zealand. Her father was of irish decent and her mother was of aboriginal decent. I think she still lives in New Zealand
Thanks Olfux! This is sick stuff.
I never got to see Bernstein at work (born after he died.)

that's a duet that has to really match dynamics-wise.
Enjoyed your take and totally agree. Moreover, to see a young Carreras is just wonderful.
@@mona2242😍😍😍

Oh wow... Kiri's note at 2:57. Gor. Geous.

@00:38 is that Woody Allen? I know he plays the clarinet
me too
Clarinetist looks like Charlie Russo to me, but so much younger than he was when he was our quintet coach at MSM in 1974-75. I could be wrong, of course.
@kend16 Is this true? Where did you hear about his dislike for Carreras?
it's so beautiful, i love this song but i think it would be better off just outside the taxation and the final he talk
beautiful, but why is only one artist listed. it looked to me like there were two vocalists, not to mention that guy with the stick in his hand
jose carreras sings maria like no one i have every heard period. that's why Lb chose him.
Who is the 1 fool who disliked this?
oh brother, its a documentary, not a performance. I see where you're coming from, but the actual recording is lovely.
hi sorry- was that reply meant for me or someone else? cause I didn't mean in any way to reference those sort of politics. I was just saying the recording sounded very nice =]
