    As plane spotters at Skiathos airport, also known as the Second St Maarten, we wanted a low landing, but we definitely hadn't seen this one coming! Many people have said that it was the LOWEST LANDING they had ever seen at Skiathos and it is definitely one of the lowest landings in the world itself. After touchdown, two clear marks from the landing gear were drawn before the runway threshold!
    Beat that, St Maarten!

      Marco Aria ... clearly not! There is persistent low level wind shear below 500ft at this airport and such a low approach is NOT good flying. Any wind shear occurring close to the threshold could have caused that aircraft to miss it's intended landing point.
      There would have been no time to power up to miss the threshold. In other words, there was no margin of error ... they were on the limits ... not a good idea. The runway is 5,300 feet long which isn't huge but not so short as to warrant such a landing. Boeing 757's are checked out to land here. This was a 737 a considerably smaller and lighter aircraft.

    Been there and done that. For anyone wondering, that was one of the shortest commercial runways in the world (the other end is the sea.. no overshoot). When I was there they could only carry 30mins of fuel on take off to reduce weight and had to land almost immediately on the Greek mainland to refuel.. and what a take off it was. Apparently they have now extended the runway for safety!

    The tail of this 737-800 is 6.6m so - even if there is a bit of perspective - you can see that the landing gear was around a meter away from the fence.
    Extremely scary.

      It bounced a bit. It certainly touched down in front of touch-down zone, perhaps even in front of the numbers. Then again, it only had about 800 ft of "spare" runway.

      bg147 Runway is 7,546 ft. (2,300m) long. A Boeing 737 needs a required take-off field length of 7,874 ft. 328 ft. shorter runway than the minimum requirements for the plane. Hence the short landing and high takeoff climb.

    Many comments below praise the skill of the pilot but these posters are ignorant. This landing was very unprofessional and needlessly dangerous. He landed short (skid marks prior to the threshold arrows) with plenty of runway to use, and way too low to allow for any slight deviation in wind shear, bird strike etc that may occur at the last few seconds.
    Air transport relies upon % safety margins and this crew seemed to be more interested in showing off than their duty of care to the passengers and airline. The fact that they were busy waving from the cockpit windows just before takeoff on a notorious runway reinforces this point. I'll remember not to fly with the Air Italy Group.

    Why does the window of a jumbo jet open up? What, are you going to be cruising at 30,000 feet and say, "It's stuffy in here I think I'll open a window."

      Brandy Garrett What, did you hear some bad comedian say that and decide to repeat it on TH-cam? If you are referring to the cockpit windows, in a 747 (an actual "Jumbo Jet"), none of the windows open. No pressurized airliner has opening passenger windows for the obvious reason that it would probably kill everyone on board if a passenger opened a window at 30,000ft. For aircraft that do have opening cockpit windows, they are there for several reasons. First, so the crew have a way to escape if the aircraft is on fire or something. The passenger cabin has escape doors, the cockpit doesn't. On aircraft without cockpit windows, like the 747 and 787, the crew are given an overhead escape hatch and special "inertia reels" which lower them to the ground so they don't have to jump and break their legs. Second, in many cases, two of the forward vision panels can be opened in case the glass is obscured by condensation, rain, dead bird guts, or anything else. This allows them to open a window so they can see forward to land, like flipping the windshield of a Jeep down so you can see when it's covered in an inch of mud. These are called "clear vision" or "direct vision" panels, but are almost never used. Still better too have them and not need them then to need them and not have them. Third, it's a way to communicate with ground crew if needed, although that's rarely an issue these days. Traditionally, it was more important, such as when starting a piston engined aircraft.
      It may surprise you to learn that aircraft manufactures actually have some slight idea of what they are doing, and rarely add pointless features to an aircraft "just for the hell of it". Unless they are Airbus. (Just kidding. Although I kind of wonder about sidestick controllers....)

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Owen Alpp Yeah, great idea, jump out right into the path of a turbofan engine spinning at 8,000rpm. Be a lot quicker than going down with the plane, right? Even if you miss the engine, you'll almost certainly hit the wing, which is traveling at 400mph, and even if you miss that, you still have the horizontal stabilizer as a backup! Guaranteed instant death! That's brilliant. You should see if you can market that idea to the airlines.

      AV8R Runway is 7,546 ft. (2,300m) long. A Boeing 737 needs a required take-off field length of 7,874 ft. 328 ft. shorter runway than the minimum requirements for the plane. Hence the short landing and high takeoff climb.

    • @DiamondPilotDan
      @DiamondPilotDan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      a 737 does not need 7800ft for takeoff. That's incorrect. Whatever actual takeoff distance it needs will vary greatly depending on wind, temperature, altitude, and aircraft weight. I don't have access to the performance charts, but know they're capable of taking off on shorter strips. (i.e. KEYW, KMDW). if this runway was 7500ft long, there's no reason for such a low approach and rough touchdown. Im a CFII CPL AMEL

    • @Mike12522
      @Mike12522 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrWolfSnack - The runway at Skiathos is 5,341 feet, or 1,628 meters . The runway at St. Maarten is 7,546 feet, or 2,300 meters.

    How to get a free plane ride with this RIDICULOUSLY EASY TRICK!
    Step 1: wait for the plane to take off in the other direction
    Step 2: When the plane takes off, hop up off a car and grab the wing.
    Step 3: Hang on for dear life
    Step 4: You're there.

I'll bet when the company saw this video, the cockpit crew got some time off the think this landing over and how dangerous it was! Their aim point was really off by over 1000 feet!
