  • Two musical giants are pitted against each other! On Christmas Eve 1781, before the entire glittering court of Emperor Joseph II's Viennese empire, Mozart and Clementi face off...in a musical duel. Who will triumph????
Grammy-nominated pianist Duane Hulbert examines the pianistic competition between Clementi and Mozart and plays some of the pieces the two composers played on that fateful Christmas eve.
Stay tuned to the end to see who won.
Pieces included are Mozart's C major Sonata and his A minor Sonata as well as Clementi's B flat major Sonata and his F sharp minor Sonata. At 16:32 in the video, Hulbert will play Clementi's Sonata in F sharp minor.

Thoroughly enjoyed!! Absolutely beautiful and very fun for me and informative. Made me appreciate even more being able to sneak in and listen to my mother in law Anita Briggs without her knowing. And I believe my son's fiance was playing a piece by Clementi vs. Mozart. Thank you have found a new appreciative listener.

Imagine what a current day competition like that would look like. (It'd probably be a reality TV show today.)

Very nice painting a picture of the duel. :) I'm sure mozart went off on sick variations though

Mozart is not from Vienna but was born in Salzburg which was not even part of Austria in 1756...and I have very big doubts that Clementi was one of the two most important composers of his time (think of J. Haydn, Cherubini and others)but he was definitely a great composer for the piano

Gluck was the most important composer during Mozart's time.

I'm not sure where to find the definitive list, but you might check out some Mozart or Clementi biographies. For example: www.amazon.com/Mozart-Reign-Love-Jan-Swafford-ebook/dp/B08425FRNN/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
Also, there's a two-part podcast on the duel here: www.wqxr.org/story/mozart-and-clementi-pianistic-duel-parts-1-2/
      Good luck!

I doubt Mozart considered his K. 545 to be among his best works. To him, it was to teach students the basics. It's just that his standards were so high that he would never just put out a mechanical etude.

You're right. It's not like his later sonatas, but it's great in its simplicity and charm. Mozart described it as "for beginners," but he was such a genius that he made this simple piece enjoyable for all levels. Thanks for your input!

I believe one of Mozart's pieces that he played for the "competition" with Clementi was the 12 Variations on "Ah, vous dirai-je maman" which we recognise as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."

You have it wrong. Based on eye witness accounts, Clamenti said "I'm the east side, and Mozarts the west side. But Mozart owned me tonight! Hell, can I bow before this man? I never heard someone play with such passion and fluidity. " .. Mozart wasn't very complimentary saying "he needs to stick to his roots on the east side and make it rain over there, feel me?

Seriously though, Mozart always spoke his opinion, and he was usually right when it comes to music. Why would anyone question the best composer in the world at the time? Mozart demanded respect and it's pretty amazing that he was may more than a piano player and took the best pianist to school. People always say Mozart acted childish when criticizing , and I say BS because he earned the right to say his thoughts. He was always complimentary to Haydn so obviously he was capable of compliments

Not to be disrespectful, but I always laugh at tbe Clementi people who think all mozart did was copy and had no talent. So Here you have a man who has a masterpiece in every genre of his time , thr best composer in all of Europe, and 4 years younger beat the best pianist in tbe world that is only known for his piano works! If that doesn't show you mozart had talent, I can't help you. Lmao.

Mozart has much more mature music, than Clementi-great improvisator and teacher, nothing more

      "Nothing more"
he was: virtuoso of fortepiano, composer, teacher, builder of fortepianos (actively contributed to evolution of the instrument), editor (Beethoven's editor). He is a giant of music, he was present in every field as I wrote, from writing, playing to publishing music and building instruments.
Comparing giants is quite stupid (but it's the most common sport in youtube). Maybe we can agree that Mozart was a more important composer. But you can not say about Clementi that he was "nothing more". Expecially considering that many people do not listen to his music, because we listen only a couple of composer for every musical period, and tend to forget the others. But if one listens can find very interesting music.

Mozart was a smart guy, he liked to mock and denigrate other musician to become greater. He even wrote pieces saying they were made for beginners but they were not, so he could feel greater! A smart ass indeed. Fame made him great as well.
