University of al-Qarawiyyin - the oldest higher education institution in the world

Around 1200 years ago, a refugee from Tunisia immigrated to the city of Fes, in Morocco. He died a rich man, leaving his wealth to his two daughters. From their inheritance, one of the daughters decided to build a mosque for immigrants. The other daughter had a different idea. She wanted to build a centre for advance religious discourse. The institution she built, eventually became a university and according to UNESCO, the University of al-Qarawiyyin is the oldest continuously operating higher education institution in the world! I got an opportunity to visit the beautiful mosque, which is the base of this university.
