Trumpets & Trunks Up as Wild Scents Alarm the Elephants & Flashbacks of Khanyisa’s Human Bonds

- Adine and her son, 24 year old Xander, visit Khanyisa at the orphanage before heading out for a walk in the wild with the elephant herd.
As the homestead gates are opened for the herd to head into the bush, Fishan and some of the elephants react to the scent of what we think must be the wild elephants who passed through the area sometime in the early morning.
Our carers can hear and see the wildlife that lives around the homestead from time to time, whether at night as their staff accommodation is right alongside the homestead- or in the morning as they prepare for the day ahead.
There are plenty of trumpets from the herd and the impala seem to be out too, letting their calls be heard. Khanyisa reacts by lifting her trunk up into the air to pick up scents and signs but she doesn’t stop munching while doing so!
She is alarmed at one stage and runs between her carer Herman and sheep, Lammie and Nungu, and Adine and Xander, until the herd settles down once they realise there is no threat.

She was so tiny back then and such a playful little handful, so cute when she was running back and forth her cute ears flapping and trunk wiggling in the air. You could see how much she enjoyed your Xanders company.
You can really see how much Khanyisa has grown when you see Xander with her now ❤️🐘 The elephant's sense of smell and protection is unbelievable
I was thinking the same thing about how tiny she was and if i recall right, quite precocious 😀 She's still as adorable but not nearly as cheeky. She's growing up 😊 Thank you for another wonderful video. It was a beautiful sunrise. Love and blessings to all at HERD. 💗🙏

Okay I know everyone is focused on sweet Khanyisa and her adorableness, but am I the only one who noticed how CUTE Xander is??? Just me? Okay, I'll see myself out. Also, I love how Khanyisa runs to the safety of her sheepies when she's spooked...so cuuuuuute.
You could definitely tell that the herd was upset. Their loud trumpeting is really powerful. The carers are so brave. It was so great to see little Khanyisa splashing around. She was so tiny. She's getting to be so big now. Thank you all for taking such good care of these precious ellies. You've all earned your wings in my opinion. Aw, not-so-little Miss Pinkylicious was a little perturbed at all the noise from her family, so cute the way she ran back to Herman and her sheepie-pals. Fishan didn't sound happy at all. Gorgeous sunrise in the background as Khanyisa busies herself with the important business of eating 😁 The Herd were definitely focussed on moving quickly this morning!

Wow the elephants were is rare form this morning. Khaynisa seemed also agitated, but with Xander, Adine and Herman there she settled down. Khaynisa was so small back then. I loved watching her running after Xander her little legs just moving so fast and and her small bum moving from side to side. She has always loved the water 💦. She has was fearless even then, straight into the water! The sheer joy she exudes fills me with such happiness. Cant get enough of this darling ray of sunshine, even now a year later.
I love seeing baby Khanyisa running. And do you remember when she would use the rake with her trunk? She was so good at helping out wit it.

The walks with the elephants must be exhilarating. Watching makes me feel I am on the adventure, too! Love hearing them trumpet, but I laughed when you said they were rowdy. Hard to believe Khanyisa was so small. Seeing her so playful was a delight. The sun is long up where you are, and the day winding down. I'm hoping it was a good day for everyone and the herd.

The stamina of the carers out all day with the elephants is remarkable - physical and mental stamina. I remember being really afraid the first time I saw Miss pretty pink baby in the deep water. She though has always seemed so happy and relaxed in the water to me.
Adine’s rumble really speaks to Khanyisa. I wonder what she interprets it to say. Maybe “I love you” or “I will always protect you”. This is the 3rd time I have seen Khanyisa heading off towards another elephant with great purpose and her hearing Adine’s rumble, stopping dead in her tracks and turning around to head back to Adine. It is pretty powerful!
I just hope the carers can smell POACHERS!!! Always stay on guard!

A lovely video. Some Ellie excitement and nostalgia too, thank you. Our baby girl is growing up, but still just a toddler, with an adoring family to care for her, human and elephants both. It gives me comfort knowing you are all there across the world from me in Canada, but we can share in the mutual love of Herd. 🤗🐘💖
Isn’t it beautiful that despite all the nurturing and love her human carers have shown in rehabilitation- that Khanyisa reacted like an elephant. Ears flapping, trunk up and alert, which shows that since her human rescue, her elephant family has taught her to respond as she should. Just another milestone in the Pink Princess’s life xx
And those flashbacks of her as a baby, are so sweet! She certainly has a good bond with Xander. Adine - I noticed though when the elephants were reacting to the wild elephants, she came to you first. I think she will always see you as a mother figure, she checked on you before her sheep friends xx

Does this mean that they slept through whatever it was they picked up on? I was thinking that wouldn't happen, with their amazing senses, but whatever it was must have been close by, right?
And I noticed your son talking to Khanyisa the same way you do ❤️
They may have reacted during the night too and again in the morning, we aren’t quite yet sure, but the mix of the smells and fresh wild elephant dung and the impalas close by and calling definitely got them riled up when they could go out into the bush to investigate! 💛💛

Observing instinctual Elephant behavior from just a scent...
I have often wondered if WE humans can still recognize scent, and whether or not it affects our behavior without US even knowing why.
Probably but we mask our scent with lotions deoderants and perfumes, so its that much harder to see if we can

Khanyisa was so cute swimming in the water with Adine and Xander. She was having a ball! Yup, she was and is a water baby from the get go!

What a cool reaction from the carers, Adine and Xander when our Ellies got very reactive to the smell (dung and other) of the wild Elephants and Impalas Gentleman Fishan was not pleased at all and made sure everyone understood his warning even our little miss Sunshine got so exited and was looking for comfort near Hermann, Lammie and Nungu
It was so heartwarming to see our pink baby with Xander in the Bush she really had a great time playing with him and Adine at the dam It really was cuteness overload 🥰

Seeing Khanyisa so happy in the water is so heartwarming, specially knowing the difficult time she had previously to that. Also endearing to see how the Herd care for themselves as a group. A happy elephant is a happy sight to see indeed!

Khanyisa was so young when she suffered trauma that she will never forget; anything strange like the smell of other wild animals is scarey and as you see upsetting. So cute to see her run to the safety of her loving carers along with her lambi friends. Whats funny is

Felt emotional about rewatching the flashback part. I remember well that video as i subscribed to you few months before covid time and i remember Xander during covid lockdown. It is also lovely to hear your daughter Lente laugh and filming you at the end.

I think he knows he is vulnerable because of his injury and it makes him feel more anxious.
